Title: Sportsman Show
Post by: Kingpuck on January 20, 2013, 02:11:36 PM
So is anyone going to the Sportsman show this next weekend? Have always wanted to go but never had the time before. Plan on spending most of Saturday and all day Sunday out there. Will be heading there with my hunting partner to hopefully figure out some new tips.

Can barely wait for September already. Can't wait to get out in a few weeks to look for sheds and start scouting in a few months. Feels like a long way off.

The wife and I will take my elk antlers down on Thursday afternoon, not that I want to get them scored there but it is convenient as opposed to driving them to Federal Way.

Then, I will go back Sat. or Sunday and pick them back up and check things out at the show.

They use to measure you rack for free.  It is now a fee, and last time I walked by up there it was 20 dollars per animal.

Yes they give out medals and I think prizes to the first few spots.

I will be up there off and on all week. I normally have a a metal art booth upstairs but not this year. I will have some of my truck Racks on display on the trucks outside from Northwest Motorsports though. I will probably be hanging around them mostly.

Stop by and say hello

Wenatchee has a sportsman show?

Yes, its the first annual one...its at the toyota town center.  I think Feb 22-24...google it.   I saw a billboard in town with it on there.  Yes they actually still have billboards over here in Wenatchee...I thought they were a thing of the past until I moved here..

Dad is working a booth at the show and doing seminars everyday on elk hunting.  They moved our booth location this year.  We are still in the pavilion, but more toward the middle of the building (booth# 1028).  I wish I could be there.  It's the first time in 13 years I won't be at the show.

I'm working til Sunday.  I was going to have my deer taken in by a friend, but can't seem to get it back from the taxidermist since oct.  He is there today and said it was $30 to have it scored, $10 to enter it plus show entry fee.   He asked them what the top prizes were and they wouldn't tell him.  Not sure it is worth the headache, even if I had said antlers in possession.  Just wondering what I would score and if I could make the book.

Listening to my Project Management class and starting to worry that the long drive is not going to be worth it. Never been before and hoping it doesn't disappoint. Kind of expensive to attend an event. It would be nice if they made it free and charged the vendors something and then a few bucks instead on the seminars or something.

Same kind of thing happened to the Bellevue Fly Fishing show. People got fed up with the $12 entry and nothing worth seeing.

The Head and Horns ended with me getting my bear in at 21 5/16 for 1st place. Pretty humbling considering how many people put animals into this. Some of those racks were incredible; I can only dream of getting lucky enough (after a lot of hard work) to get a chance at one of those some day. The pics of the bear are under 'Bear Down' in the bear hunting section.

Just curious, I didn't get my antlers back from the tax in time for the show.   Is there a WA contest that I can still enter them in elsewhere?  If I don't make it to a show, can I still enter them next year in Puyallup for a prize?  Did the first place guys at Puyallup win anything cool?

I think you should be able to enter it next year. The first place mule deer (260's)was from the 60's i believe. Not too sure of the rules.
Oh and by the way, for anyone interested, that tripod burn buck netted over 235"!!

Wowzers.  I saw them scoring the tripod buck, and it was really impressive in person.  Inredible frame, and love the soot from the burn.  Pretty sure that 60's buck was there too, sitting in the back - probably 35" or so with lots of junk?  Full mount?

I sure hope those goat horns are just on that board for that show thing would be a shame not to have a 1/4 life size done IMO.

I should poke and prod my uncles to get their uncles(my great uncle) buck off the wall and have it scored,he shot it in the 60's and the spread is 44 if I remember right(it hit both bedrails of a jeep pickup) and is 36 or so tall, shot it at curlew on his first ever deer hunt and never hunted deer again, never scored either.Uncle Robert passed away last summer.
