who uses braided for fishing other then stergeon? i used it in westport for a while but its such a pain in the butt to break off when its stuck so i went back to using 12 pound mono for bottom fishing for sea bass and 30 pound mono for lings i use 4 pound for catching perch makes it more fun.
-
I use 30 or 50 lb for lings and rockfish, I like to be able to lift 15 pound rocks off the bottom if my hook won't pull loose. :chuckle: I use the same line for salmon. I'd rather have to wrap my line on a cleat to break it off than lose a bunch of gear.
In freshwater (trout, bass, etc.) I like Trilene XL in about 12 pound.
-
I use 50lb spectra and a 30lb mono topshot for shallow water bottom fish. That way when you get hung up it just breaks the mono, plus mono is more abrasion resistant which is important when fishing in the rocks.
-
didnt know that. i may just stick to my mono then othen then for stergeon.
-
I use 50# braided for lings and 30# mono for sturgeon.
-
Mono for everything. Trilene XL in 6-12 pound for bass and trout, 12-40 pound Big Game for everything else.
-
i like using lighter lines but rock fishing its hard not to use 12-15 pounds or larger because the rocks i tryed using 6 out there and it kep breaking because it would rub on the rocks. i can use 4 pound on perch because i stand on the little beach thing were i fish so the line is not affected by rocks
-
I use braid 99% of the time. The only time I don't is when I'm drift fishing or chuckin hardware, which isn't too often anymore. I've tried plenty of brands but always go back to power pro.
-
i like power pro thats what i use.
-
:yeah:
-
Got you all beat 100-130 lb power pro :chuckle: I like to be able to pull them off the bottom by the tail if need be :o
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1356.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq728%2Fteacherman619%2FC32AD792-1C13-4BC1-8E1B-4468C16447E6-6617-000007B5BD8157CC.jpg&hash=5a2d854b014047cebd8dbf39c7155ad08bbd21c8)
24 oz jig in a 56 lb lings tail from 90'. Power pro 100 lb, 7' Tiger Uglystik, Penn 330, and one heck of a fight!!!
(Side note its legal to snag in salt water in AK)
-
Most of our 'butt fishing was done in 50 to 60 fathoms. Mono just had too much stretch and drag when using heavy jigs at that depth. 50 or 80# braided was all we used on the boat. Sometime plus a 40# mono leader if we had some good giant bay herring. Largest 'butt to hit the deck was 187#! Remington had some line out that we tested that was absolutely superb. Too bad it never made it. If I were running the boat today it would be Power Pro without question. Still with Chameleon 40# leader if we had the bait.
-
40# and 30# Izorline
For salmon
Also 40# Berkley big game
-

Exactly, my thoughts.... All Salmon reels filled with 55lb Power pro and utilize leaders for presentation. Do not need to change line each year like you would with mono, heck every few trips for that matter.... Sturgeon/Bottom fish reels, always 80lb Power Pro! I do have mono on Steelhead reels...
-
I also used 50# braid when I went to AK a few years ago for sockeye. Had to laugh at everyone else breaking off in the brush along the bank when I'd just pull the branches off and keep fishing. :chuckle:
-
I like to use 65 lb power pro for salmon and rock fish. 200 lb power pro for sturgeon and 100 lb power pro for halibut!
Steelhead 12lb sufix superior.
Walleye 20lb fire line with a 15lb mono leader
B_C
-
Steelhead 8-10 lb fluoro-coated mono
salmon 15-30 lb copolymer
Nothing but P-line on my reels, except my sturgeon rig, 60lb power pro.
-
Braid kept popping out of my downrigger releases, so I just spooled up woth #30 mono for salmon
-
Depends on how I'm fishing. For drift fishing for steelhead, #10 or #12 Izorline, that stuff is strong as heck. If I'm float fishing though I use #30 Power Pro because it floats and that no stretch really helps bury a hook when your float fishing. For trout, I just use 6# Izorline, can't beat it. I don't see the need for braid when trout fishing. Sturgeon my reel is spooled with 65# power pro, but thinking about bumping up to 80# for the increased abrasion resistance.

:yeah:
I like the 20# power pro for all my freshwater fishing and just use a mono leader up to about 15# depending on what I'm doing. There is nothing like braid for vertical jigging. For bottom fishing off the coast the charters don't let you use braid, so I just have a reel spooled with 40# mono on my bottom fishing rod.
-
I used to swear by power pro, until I got tired of replacing it every couple years. Try some Jerry brown spectra, you'll never go back. I also think P line is junk. Izorline is pretty tough to beat as far as mono. As far as braid or spectra popping off the downrigger, that's why I bumped up to 50lb, if Im fishing really deap like 300 plus sometimes I run a mono topshot to give the release clip a little more to hold onto.
-
I like the 65 lb PowerPro. thick enough to not cut into the line already spooled. And also not so fine that it slices me up like the 30 lb stuff does.
-
20-30 lb braid with 20lb mono leader for steelhead and salmon bank fishing
8-10lb mono for the trout reels
-

Why is p-line junk? That stuff is tough as nails. CXx for the casters and cx for the spinning reels. It's out performed McCoy izorline and trilene for me.
-
Float fishing I use 30lb power pro. 15 lb leader.
Drift fishing and hardware I use nothing by maxma green.. Old school 10 lb main line and 8 lb leader.
-
Why such heavy leader for your float rod hunt?
I'm not set to any poundage of leader for anything. I let the water dictate how what lb leader I will use. If I can get away with 15-20 in darker water I will. The benefit to lighter leaders is you get a more natural presentation which I believe is especially important for float fishing.
-
I use it when there is structure to pull the fish out. When it is wide open with no structure I use 10 lb leader.
E.g. Skookumchuck has lots of structure. 15 lb is what I use
Wynoochee where there is not too much structure I can get away with 10 lb mono
-
For dragging the bottom of the salt 80lb power pro (found a deal on a 1500ft spool e-bay) for Salmon 20lb maxima ultra green, river fishing 15lb maxima ultra green, trout 6lb maxima ultra green.
-
50 and 65lb power pro on my steelhead/salmon rigs with 8lb maxima leaders for steelhead and 20lb for salmon. I dont buy braid by poundage I buy it for diameter.
I have no idea what guys are talking about with braid being hard to break..I can usualy break most off with a hard jerk due to the line having no stretch ...one thing I like...I hated the days of using mono and pulling and stretching line forever to get it to break..done with that stretchy stuff
-
i like the line diameter of braided line i was using 10 pound braided (2diam) for perch and greenling and it worked great. i got almost 100 yards on my trout pole that i use to use for rock fishing
-
4 pound for trout and panfish, 8-10 pound for bass, 12 for pinks, silvers, and steelhead, and 12-15 for chums, 15-20 for kings. Catfish also go 4 -10 pound.
Prefer to go as light as possible for the conditions but that's an average for me. When trolling pop gear for trout and Kokanee I run 12 main and 4 pound leaders. Also I always use mono now a days. Especially on the crowded rivers. Braid makes a mess for everyone out there. Especially since every time I see someone on the river with braid they never seem to cast in order with the crowd. After spending that much time tangled in others line you would think they would cast in order. Braid has a good purpose. I just don't like it on crowded rivers.

:yeah: Most people dont bother to read the box and use the right line for their reels. Then blame the line when it shoots off the reel and tangles up.
-
I have always been a Trilene kinda of guy ...its kinda like broadheads , once I find what works best for me I never change :dunno: :chuckle: For Salmon and steelhead I like Trilene ( BIG GAME ) 15 OR 20 # TEST ....Toughest momo you can buy
-
I use 4lb Berkley Trilene XT on my ultra light and light spinning rods for jigging pan fish, walleye, and trout. My trolling/ baitcaster rigs are spooled with 10lb Trilene XT. My sturgeon/ Ocean bottom fishing pole has 40lb Trilene big game mono on it.
-
Halibut rods have 50lb Jerry Brown braid.
Salmon downrigger rods have 25lb Berkley Big Game. Making the switch to P-Line Cxx when the spool of BG is gone.
Salmon mooching rods have 12lb Big Game
Steelhead float rods have 30lb Fireline
Trout rods have whatever 4lb mono is on sale.
-
this summer i was fishing the snake when i was over on the east side and i caught a 30 pound catfish on 15 pound p-line i dont see why people think its bad line. what line i dont like is spider wire or what ever its called i had problems with there braided line fraying and the mono i was using as leaders kep breaking on sea bass i went to england marine in westport bought the cheapest 15 pound test and it worked way better then that spider crap.
-
I've converted many people over to P-line. Most of them used Izor, before they saw the light. Izor is strong, but it ends there. The Memory sucks, it stretches like bubble gum and good luck spooling up at the river and keeping it on the reel. Just my opinion and observation though.... at least you get a free sticker.
-
I go as light as I can go without breaking off a fish. 2 lb.floracarbon for trout to 65 lb braided for monster fish
-
Just my opinion on the p line. I've tried it all, I get free spools so have no reason to be biased. I especially hate their fluorocarbon, it's twice the diameter of seagar and a pain to tie knots with, that's what initially turned me away from P line.
-
i noticed that before with the p-line it does do weird things when i tie certian knots. i thought it was because i was in a hurry when the bite was on i just tied a few knots and it is weird.
-
Everybody has stuff they don't like. Me,I don't like Maxima. I think its overpriced and overrated.

I fully agree. Theyre 100% fluorocarbon sucks, The fancy halo stuff isnt much better and for $25 per 200yd spool, they can keep it.
-
Here is something you can do to your brade to keep it floating so it is easy to mend.
Go to a fly shop and get a wax case and run your line through that. You are good for a long time. I am not sure what it is called. I have the flu and I am not getting up to see what it is.
-
Haven't had much luck with the P line either...... I have been using the maxima crystal ivory in 12lb. I have that for the mainline and also use it for my leaders. For me I have had a lot of success with it. The rod I fish with is the G LOOMIS.... GL3. It's 10'6" and has the line weight of 6-12lb test....... I have landed some pretty big fish with hat combo..... The other rod that I mainly use is the lamiglas certified pro, 10'6" , with the line weight of 10-20..... That's my king rod. Both get the maxima line..... The Lami.. I use heavier line...... But I love those rods and the crystal ivory line has performed well for me!!
-
I've actually had great luck with maxima as well, just harder to get my hands on and izor seems to be comparable. If one leader can hold up to a dozen tuna on live bait stops... (Without retying) It's proven itself to me. None of my experience has been on metal heads, or any rivers for that matter, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Crystal ivory is good also
-
Generally you will find P-line CXx on my rods. You might find a couple with Maxima but that is only because I have a bulk spool I am working on using. I think you would be hard pressed to find tougher mono than either of these.... :twocents:
-
Mallard 79....... Absolutely correct in my opinion! But you know it also has a lot to do with what river you're fishing, visibility , clarity of water. And actually what's under the water and in the water. In the water I mean how silty a particular river may be due to what time of year it is. I have found that water that has a lot of silt in it...... Hoh river during certain times of the year will make the crystal ivory really chalky and weak. That's the only thing I don't like about it.....
-
Ive tried P line fluro....no thanks...used it for leader tying on steelhead 2 years ago...never snapped off so many leaders in my life and the 12lb P line couldnt hold a candle to the Maxima 8lb
-
:yeah:
I wound up throwing away a couple spools of P-Line for that same reason. The knots sucked on them as well.

Down riggers popping with braided line? Break off apiece off round toothpick, one wrap around toothpick clamp in release. Works great dont tell anyone!

Similar for me. Pretty much all my reels have 65 lb. Power Pro high vis. I too utilize leaders for presentation and break offs. Have a couple older Penns that get used in the salt and they have heavier mono so as not to dig into the spools as braid would.
My kokanee reels and ultra light trout spinning outfits have light mono. Have a bunch with nothing on them as I bought a bunch of new expensive poles on sale, which stimulated me to get new reels. Just have not got to them. Starting to feel as if I could open my own tackle shop. Have more gear than I can fish in three lifetimes. :chuckle:
-
the only kind of p-line i've had trouble with is the "evolution" kind. don't think it's even made any more, but that stuff was horrible. CXX is great for anything other than spinning reels, provided you use the right knots.
-
I use Tuf Line for Sturgeon, would probably use the same any time I was fishing deep water and big fish but would consider a monofilament for a leader. For trout and panfish...4 pound mono. For catfish, I like catching big ones up to 20 lbs (my biggest so far was 19.75), so I go with 10-15 lb mono, usually a Stren or Berkley (don't think there's much difference).
