Title: Shed Dog Hunting
Post by: quadcrazy69 on January 22, 2013, 09:13:13 AM: I'm looking at starting a Northwest Chapter for the North American Shed Hunting Dog Association. I'm looking for people who have trained their dogs to hunt for sheds. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in joining such a club and if you're interested in participating in a trial.

Post by: blacktail luv on January 22, 2013, 10:39:54 PM: I actually thought about taking my pup back to Minnesota for a competition last year but couldn't justify the expense. This will be her third season shed hunting with me. I can't imagine shed hunting without her now she finds a lot.

Post by: Holg3107 on January 24, 2013, 03:49:24 PM: I've got a 5.5 month old chocolate lab "Theo" that I'm working on training to be a shed hunter. Here's a pic of him at 9 weeks with some bone getting his first taste. I know have about 3-4 sheds hidden all over the yard and everytime he finds one and brings it to me he gets a special treat. Not real sure how else to train the little guy. Whe we are working I just say "find the shed" and he starts hunting. We'll see come spring when we start to do some hiking in areas that hold some deer. I'm not really a big shed hunter, just happen to find 10-12 per year wile I'm out hiking so I'm hoping Theo will up my chances a bit.

Please be patient and check back here often. Spread the word. This is the fastest growing sport for sporting dogs on the East coast.

I'm pretty sure there are cd's out there to help train your pup on antler hunting. One thing I've heard is to not let them chew on the antlers, don't touch the antlers with your bare hands (they smell your scent not the antlers) and hide the antlers days before you have him find them so any scent from you is no longer there. Very cute dog, I have chocolat labs and we used to breed our female. Nothing like have 10 little puppies chase you around the yard, yes that's my only gay moment!!

I did buy a few Bill Hillman DVD's that I am finding to be very valuable (though they are expensive). They a aren't specifically for shed hunting but I think it's helping build a solid foundation in my dog.

Post by: antlerking on January 24, 2013, 05:49:45 PM: pretty easy2 do just put in the time and its very rewarding my dog found probably half of my 2012 total last year work with them and stick 2 the routine and reward with beef jerky he seems to find more when I have treats

Thanks for the tips guys, and I'll watch the video at lunch. And there's nothin gay about loving being chased by some lab puppies! If it is I think we all may be a little gay.
