H20hunter will be joining my elk hunting party this September. He has never elk hunted that I know of so I'm leaving it up to hunt wa members should I take baby steps with him or just drop him off at the deep end of the pool?
-
Very nice of you D-Rock. Wish I had that opportunity of being offered to learn something new to hunt. I say use the time to teach him the in and outs of everything you can about elk hunting. I know I would someday return the same offer if it was me.
H20 good luck
Hrd
-
Drop me off baby!
Beginners luck is what I'm counting on. I've got points...putting in for a bull permit.....putting my soon to be new to me bow to use....you name it I'm game!
Already told the bro in law he is coming with us this summer to hang stands and do prep work. An extra pair of hands and strong back is always good.
-
He's a big boy. Dump him in the deep end and let him sink or swim. My experience with newbie bull hunters is that it'll take him a few years to get the right mindset unless he just lucks onto one or you spoon feed him to a bull.
-
I say drop him off in the deep end..........then help him pack out his elk. :chuckle:
-
id say deep end. always more satisfaction going deep. :chuckle:
-
I'm expecting to be spoon fed a bull, have everyone else pack it out, then cook me a backstrap dinner while D-Rock pours me a bourbon over some fresh chopped glacier ice.
Oh....and I will not be bringing any knives and I'm afraid of blood.
-
I have a few stand locations pick out for you buddy.
-
I may joke but I am stoked. I'll help anyone haul elk, I'll gut 'em....whatever it takes.
-
Not sure of the success rate in your area D-Rock, but in my unit it's 8%. That means a lot of disappointed hunters. My camp and I do alright every year, but a lot of work goes into that success.
So H20, hope for the best but don't be surprised if all you get is a workout this fall.
-
I'm kinda banking on his beginners luck. He'll probably get drawn for a bull permit than shoot a nice 350 inch bull opening morning.
-
Nonsense......It's a slam dunk!
I've had many a trip turn into a workout. I'd go back and do every one of 'em again.
-
Regarding points....I'll have 4.....better than none I suppose!
-
H20, Apple Pie in Elk camp does help with the sore muscles.
It can also be used as a tool the evening before the hunt to make others sleep in while you get out the next morning. I did employ that tactic this season and it worked well on the adjoining camp.
-
I'm not sure of success rate either but in the last 10 years ive killed 8 elk. Witch is way above the norm for archery hunters. He should have plenty of opportunity what he does with them will be up to him.
-
Deep end him. Stop at the end of a spur, point in the general uphill direction and say "There's a legal bull right up there, I can smell him. Have him back here at the landing in two hours."
And when you come back 8 hours later, I wouldn't wager against H20 sitting on a pile of bloody game bags having an attitude about having to haul that elk back down on the double because he was thinking he might be 15 minutes late and miss his ride. Just be prepared for that and have that bourbon with you.
-
He's on the 3rd ridge over go get him.
-
No problem....down 13 lbs already and working hard. I'll hit Notellum ridge and hunt it hard.
-
Not many trees for them to hide there.
-
That's are late season area. A lot more trees where we hunt in September. I didn't have any hood pictures of that area on my phone.
-
D-rock can kill elk. Looks like you found a new camp anyone would want to be in. Good luck h20
-

Of course I'm used to hunting Rosies on the OP. Your country would look a little sparse when compared to mine. Whole different type of hunting between the two areas.
-
Thanks Nubbs. Should be a good camp/hunt/time regardless.
-

Fresh meat sounds like a new porter to me! :chuckle: H20hunter start working out those legs and back muscles.
-
What exactly did D-Rock promise you in this camp H20? White Lightning and Banjo music? If you hear Banjo music, run!
Remember the sacred rule. What happens in Elk camp stays in Elk camp...
-
I make a decent porter and meat sherpa. Promises? Nothing much....a double sleeping bag, starlit nights, candles...the usual for elk camp.
-
Throw him in the deep end, i mean he is an expert archery doe killin machine and popped his bear cherry this year....
h2o, ever think it may just be your red beard and purty mouth that got you invited?? :chuckle:
-
Could be. I got a pretty sweet badonkadonk as well. Ask my wife...it is so sweet, like an onion, it makes 'er cry.
-
looks like a new bird dog !
-
It's the stink that makes her cry.
-
Now that is true...yes indeed.
-
What's this about a double sleeping bag and candles D-Rock?
-
I will hopefully have my new wall tent for h20hunter to sleep in while I will be in my nice warm trailer.
-
You mean harem tent. :chuckle:
-
My wife and kids might be there.
-
Harem tent?
I just got a visual of H20 in a I dream of Jeannie outfit. Argh! :puke:
How about them Seahawks!
-
Planes, trains, automobiles, and elk....classic.
-
I just got a visual of H20 in a I dream of Jeannie outfit. Argh! :puke:
That's a classic overshare, right there.
And really, if I could, I'd use an icepick to stab my mind's eye to get this image out of my head.
Not cool, Goldeneye!
-
Planes, trains, automobiles, and elk....classic.
I swear, if I hear somebody yell "Those aren't pillows!" in the middle of the night up in elk country, I'm out - and gladly eating my tag.
-
SKillet, are you part of D-Rocks Elk camp?
-
HE WISHES!
Does Spott Hogg not make a camo sight? Are they all black?
-
Nah, I'm just a stalker. Been following D-Rock around for years with a tag and a bowie knife, trying to run down his kills before he gets to them.
-
No camo sight. Once you go black you never go back.
-
Sounds like he's ready for what you got, D-Rock. FYI: he probably already knows 'bout them snipe hunts! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
H20, I think I remember that you like to use the Hello Kitty product when it comes to hunting and shooting. Is this the same model bow you use?
-
That matches my glasses.
-
Nope.....my Kitty bow has different fletching on the stick things the fling out of it. See, I had and extra pink boa lying around that wasn't seeing much use so i snipped some of the fluffy off and used that to fletch the arrows. That way...when they go flying...the pink strands flow like the mane on my favorite Horseland character.
-
8 for 10 drock.... wow thats really good,
-
8 for 10 drock.... wow thats really good,
i guess it aint that bad. Little room for improvement.
-
D-Rock, Are you on the waiting list for SR&P? They are about ready to add this years new members.
-
He should be as close as he is but I don't think so.
-
I just hope your rookie gets a warmer welcome than our last rookie/s kind of accidently got. :chuckle:
-
Do tell.......It will be a good camp. D and I have hunted bear and deer together and always enjoy the hunts. I try and be a good newbie and am always happy to put the hunt on hold and help when a critter hits the ground. I've heard about camp and think I'll be a good addition.
-
D-Rock, Are you on the waiting list for SR&P? They are about ready to add this years new members.
that's a negative.
-
SR&P????

Rookies usually are required to clean up up for everyone after all meals (wash dishes etc). Also they make sure there are cold beverages ready after the days hunt for the camp vetrans. ;)
-
SR&P????
The Gun Range in Machias. They have a cap on the membership numbers. New members are brought in each spring.
-
Well....regarding the duties of rookies I will do my part and help....however.....I'm nobodys.........you know.

The people in question are members here, but any way they showed on an afternoon a couple days into the season. They also showed just a couple of minutes after I had stepped out of the truck, marched off the side of the road and with extreme grace and precision missed a cow standing broadside at 150yds that was less than 1/4 mile from camp. While checking for blood I saw their rig and mentioned something along the lines of "I bet that's them 'censored word' coasties" into the radio that they were listening on. :chuckle:
-
Well....regarding the duties of rookies I will do my part and help....however.....I'm nobodys.........you know.
LOL! Awe come on just yesterday you were talking about how attractive you are...
-
Shoot.....thats understood! Besides...the pretty ones never do the dishes....we would ruin our nails.
-
If you don't do the dishes because it would ruin your nails, what do you do??? :-\
-
Just stand around and look pretty. Is there anything else when not on stand?
-
D-Rock, you need to keep a photo log of this seasons elk camp. Some people won't believe what they are seeing in your camp by the sounds of it. Opening shot should be of H20 arriving in camp in his pink FJ Cruiser... :chuckle:
-
Don't be scared h20 it's not been that bad.
-
Not scared a bit.....of course I don't have Tim as a bunk mate......
-
I hear banjo music in the back ground... :chuckle:
-
What's wrong with banjo music.
-
:yeah:
What's wrong with banjo music.
-
One word H20, BACON...
-
2nd word-SQEEEELL :chuckle:
-
Dont worry h20hunter these weirdos are all rifle hunters. They just hang around camp and take their rifles for short walks every once in a while. Most of their time is spent doing the activities noted above. Bow hunters are simply different.
-
Okay......i feel better already.
-
Ugh? Don't you spend your day sitting in a blind napping until something walks by? Short walks are better than no walks.
JK D-Rock, you and I have had our share of success with the bulls. Part of the reason I do well is that I'm farther in than most of the hunters in my area. I would love to see H20 close the deal. Now well see if he can...
As I type this I'm putting the finishing touches on some backstrap from this last seasons bull. Tasty...
-
I guess some of you gun hunters ain't all that bad.
-
You show 2 or 3 guys your ride and they never let it go. I feel for you h20hunter
-
I hear ya brother. Could use a hug about now.
-
Make sure you show him how to properly gut an Elk
Elk Field Dressing Gut Bag Explosion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMa44W5jNDA#)
-
yup! thats how its done. see how much fun it is. they cant quit laughing.
-
That vid never gets old.
-
That was pretty awesome never seen that video before.
-
Ill let you gut mine for practice h20hunter.
-
Here's h20hunters stand location
-
I don't have the patience to sit in one of those all day. I'm a spot and stalk kind of guy for the most part. What happens if nature calls? I guess you climb down and do your business well away from the stand? Or do you pack a baggie up there with you and perform some gymnastics to use the potty?
-
Classic rookie mistake! :chuckle:
-
I find tree sitting much easier than on the ground. Take a book.....relax....let the tree sway you into a sense of calm. Very relaxing.
-
I've shot 4 elk from that very tree and 4 spot and stalk. I like to mix it up.
-
Is that stand big enough fro H20? He's not your average sized guy.
-
Hey....I'm shedding some weight....I'd like to think that if it will hold D-Rock it will hold me....however...I'm a bit more bulk. I agree with mixing it up ....sit and wait, spot and stalk. Do you have an extra harness or should I be shopping for one?
-

If you get down to D-Rocks weight I'll by you a pitcher of your favorite brew at the next get together.
-
Shoot.....I don't think I was down to his size since about 9th grade! I'f in the low 200's that will put me pretty lean and mean for elk camp. Down to 235 from 250 right now so I'm on the right track.
-
I was playing football at 170 my freshman year in high school. So, I understand. It's been a long while since I was his weight as well.
D-Rock, what do you weigh in at? My guess is a buck sixty.
-
I'd say he goes 165 soaking wet with full beard!
-
This sounds like a new game. 152 last i checked.
-
D....how high is that stand?
-
17 to 20 feet i think
-
Nice.....should I be shopping for a harness or do you have an extra?
-
If an h2o hunter falls in the woods and no one is there does an h2o hunter make a sound?? :dunno:
-
I say yes. Kinda a thud sound i would say.
-
A resounding thud with much whimpering.
-
Nice.....should I be shopping for a harness or do you have an extra?
i'd have to check I wear a hunter safety system vest to and from stands.
-
We will go over gear when the time comes patients my boy.
-
yes sir.
-
A resounding thud with much whimpering.
That's a good sign if you are still able to whimper!
-
So many things to do this summer hang stands build blinds trail cams. I cant wait.
-
Looking forward to a few trips over. We should actually start scheduling them now so I can get the on the family calendar.
-
Well we still need to get together one night this week. What night is good for you?
-
Probably Thursday....I'm off Friday and will be making a big fancy dinner for the little woman so she can have a nice meal when SHE gets home for a change.
-
That's very kind of you. Thursday works good for me too.
-
Okay....kids hit the rack at 8....how about right around then.
-
Sounds good to me. Your place?
-
Sure.....I've got a few beers on hand.
-
Looking forward to this years elk camp more than most years. My old man will have 10 quality bull points going into the drawing and h20hunter will be on his first ever elk hunt. I cant wait to start scouting.
-
Now that the rookie is done bear hunting its time to do some scouting.
-

Hey H20, the kokanee are still biting...
-
Yep...gotta get me a few more of those indeed!
-

Hey H20, the kokanee are still biting...
:bash: :bash: if we do any fishing its going to be for Ling not no 10 inch dink fish.
-
I'll have two rookies in camp. Stang finally manned up and got an archery tag this year.
-
I will have a "rookie" bow hunter but not rookie elk hunter in camp with me this year. Finally talked my old man into taking up archery so it will be an adventure. Can't wait to be in the mountains of Oregon this fall.
-

Is he sharing H20's tent? :o
-
Good luck to you.
-
Not sure about his sleeping arrangements.
-
I think I can break h20hunter not sure about stang.
-
I change the title for him.
-
Not sure about his sleeping arrangements.
The sharing of the tent kind of sounds like a movie that was made a while back. I never saw it. Just heard tails of it's subject matter. Something about a mountain. Can't quite remember the name...
-
Broke back mountain . Awesome movie
-
We could be the broke back mountaineers
-
They are looking for a stunt a$$ for Broke back 2 :yike:
-
Few things.....Stang and I can share a tent...no problem...he is pretty in his work clothes. Next, you may change the title to whatever you please....I will make sure I have my own Elk 2013 trainwreck thead. Next....you will never wear me down. Finally....no broke back noth'n!
-
Few things.....Stang and I can share a tent...no problem...he is pretty in his work clothes.
D-Rock, at least he didn't say you are pretty too. You could have one interesting elk camp coming up.
-
It will be interesting because we plan on putting 4 or 5 elk on the ground :IBCOOL:
-
Everyone that has met them both knows that Stang is far prettier than D...
I hope to see some elk on the ground. It will be a good camp. Looking forward to being a part of it....elk on the ground for me or not.
-
It will be interesting because we plan on putting 4 or 5 elk on the ground :IBCOOL:
We had 4 branch bulls down and brought through camp last season. Got to admit to a feeling of satisfaction about that.
-
I'm hunting with a knife (and sleeping with one).
-
Bring some preparation H and a doughnut pillow. I've got a feeling you'll need them. :yike: :yike:
-
sounds like you got a cook, firewood bot, and packer. Gotta love having a Greenhorn in camp!!
-
:yeah:

Poor Stang...

Oops, I meant firewood boy
-
I can't wait to get the rookies in a real camp.
-
Me Me!
-
We could be the broke back mountaineers
Me Me!
Whatever floats your boat.
-
I can't wait to get the rookies in a real camp.
D, you might as well adopt Smossy as well for your camp. He's small, he can fit in the tent with H20 & Stang. Then with the 3 rookies you will have quite a circus. Might provide quite a bit of entertainment...
-
Sorry but that's to many rookies.
-

Stang is not a elk hunting rookie just an archery elk rookie.
-
Stang is not a elk hunting rookie just an archery elk rookie.
But archery is much easier than the knife I normally use, so I anticipate no real concerns.
One time I threw a knife at an elk 200 yards away running over a hill AWAY FROM ME, one toss, one kill.
I'm sure archery will prove to be a non-issue with my extensive primal predatory skills. If I can ambush out of a treestand, even easier.
Now, tell me hunting with knives isn't ethical... It is how they butcher sheep, no bullets, just knives. (serious)
-
Sure
-
Drock can I join your group? I dont want to help scout, pack, pay or do any work around camp. You just drive me up to a nice 6x6 and let me shoot it?
-
Stang...I'd like to vote you out of the tent. Everyone knows that the reckless thowing of a knife with an animal skylined is completely unethical.
-
Sure what the hell I've helped guys like that before bear hunting.
-
Stang might bring his trailer you can bunk with him h20hunter.
-
Stang might bring his trailer you can bunk with him h20hunter.
I'm sleeping with a chastity belt...
-
U guys hunting west or east?
-
East
-
:bash:
-
You wanted to come to huh? 3 rookies in camp if you came along.
-
No wanted to take him out and try to get him his first bull or just get him set up on one...
-
LOL
-
Stang might bring his trailer you can bunk with him h20hunter.
I'm sleeping with a chastity belt...
I don't think they make the one you will need! :yike:
-
Should be a good year got a ton of elk pics last week.
-
when are you guys going??? ha
I say teach him as much pre-season as possible, then during the season while you guys are hunting drop him off the deep end :chuckle: with a foundation of knoledge he should do just fine. and if you need another to tag along I am always game...but due to the military i dont get to go out and scout that much :'(
-
I say we dump him off in the middle of the woods with a compass heading at 5 am and tell him we'll see him back at camp at dinner time. He might want a sleeping bag and a flashlight.
(I'm a new guy to the area too, so I'm probably digging my own grave here)
-
You guys will be just fine
-
Not worried a bit.
-
Jeeeeez. I had almost forgotten about this thread, but it pops up again. H2OHunter: Would you just go out and get that huge bull already? The anticipation is killing us. (This is almost as bad as that Spring Bear thread you guys had going earlier. It reminds me of summertime road trips in the 1970s, when everybody had CB radios, and the chatter just continued forever.)
-
Roger that......If I had a bull tag D-Rock has a massive bull....however......spikes and cows are in order for me. I'm ready...almost. Been working with the bow....checked some cams....trying to get in hiking shape to help haul meat out for others as well as my own...gonna be a good camp. Looking forward to it.
I thought my spring bear thread was a lot of fun......at least it ended with a dead bear right! :)
-
I may joke but I am stoked. I'll help anyone haul elk, I'll gut 'em....whatever it takes.
I'll take you up on that offer,H,,,LOL
-
looking forward to hunt with you guys
-

should be a good camp!

Camper officially works... might need to bring some fill dirt for the ditch to keep the rear end from dragging on the way into camp, but all pieces function as expected. I consider it officially broken in. :IBCOOL:
Was going to clean it, but i'm not sure i understand the point in doing that if H20 is going to fart all night.
-
Roger that.
-
:chuckle:
-
I believe my pa AKA wog will be heading over the 28th. I plan on leaving early early Saturday the 31st.

h20 don't forget the pickled eggs, the jalapeno ones are the best. You will be the talk of the camp! :chuckle:
-
Picked eggs, pickled pig feet, jalepeno Oh Boy O'berto.....CHECK!
-

Might want to ad the these to your shopping list:
According to the American Gastroenterology Association, the most common gas producing foods include: cauliflower, brussels sprouts, dried beans, broccoli, cabbage and bran.
Have fun!
-
Gonna wash that all down with some 40oz Ol' English!
-
Scratch the camper, I'm staying in a 1 man bivy :sry:
-
Gonna be cozy in there but we will manage.
-
Gonna be cozy in there but we will manage.
Now that will be a Kodak moment...
-
Silly boys :chuckle:
-
For you guys that gave Me crap about my broken camera wildgame innovations sent me a brand new camera that was an upgrade from what I had. I was sent the new crush lights out 8. We will see how it works.
-
Would love to know how it performs.
-
I'll try to get it hung this weekend somewhere.
-
I need to get these rookies out shooting I want no excuses.
-

Good luck with that. I know one of them is hitting the Humpies pretty regular...

yeah I know but I can't give him to much grief today I was out last night hitting the humpies and a few crab with skillet.
-
The one thing I miss about the other side if being able to fish for humpies after work!
-
Only 17 days tell I leave 20 days tell it opens :IBCOOL:
-
Gonna get some shooting in this weekend......got to start sighting in the new bow........
-

I'm heading over Sunday morning going to hang cams again. Build the blind at the stump pile.

Plenty of time.......my plan is to sight in my 20 dead on then just move the other couple pins apart the same distance out to 60...
-
:bdid:
-
Ah....so equal spacing from 20 to 30, a touch more from 30 to 40, a touch more......etc....
-
You can do what you wish. You ain't killing one from camp anyway :chuckle:
-
I"m gonna shoot that funky spike......
-
I thought we determined that he was not legal.
-
I'll be close enough to figure it out. 4 inches from the base..................i assume it braches from the same "knot".....I'll know when I see it........besides..............I'll just tell them you wanted to tag it.
Sarcasm font needed.................
-
You want to go for a ride Sunday or will you be fishing or at the yuppie Lodge? I wouldn't want an opportunity of a freezer full of elk steak to get in the way of your humpy fishing.
-
Fishing this weekend.....was planning on heading over with you towards the end of the month.....we talked about a week or two prior to the season heading over....
-
Well in case you haven't noticed we are two weekends away from leaving. Don't worry I'll get it all set up and ready for you. It'll be just like what you're use to show up sit for a while kill an elk its that simple.
-
Perfect.....I'll run up to Cabelas and get my hoochie mamma call....
-
H20 what you doin with the eggs?
-
Putting them i the crab pots with the heads.......only caught one female so far......all the others have been males....
-
H20 what you doin with the eggs?
hey this is an elk hunting thread get out of here with that fishing B/S.
-
Can we please send that pic of the funky spike in to WDFW to see if its legal. I know we're going to see it and wish we'd asked.
D-Rock, can you send me the pic?
-
I did.............the response was not legal.
However....not to rehash it totally......My opinion is that until you see him at 40 yards and can put some glass on him we won't know.

When you do put glass on him make sure there is no doubt in your mind before you stick him. There is no elk worth your hunting privileges or the hassle you might have in court fighting a citation based on WDFW definition.

:chuckle: trust me I'm torn this time of year. Luckily my stand is hung so all I have to do is shoot a little.
And h20 that hurts my soul bro...

Something along the line of "well by definition that dull would be legal but we don't like successful hunters and that elk would feed some of the new wolves we released in the area.
-
Stang, this pretty much states WDFW's stance. Their elk specialist made the call on this animal. Contact the undersigned if you want to dig deeper with them.
Dear Mr. H20Hunter,
Thank you for contacting the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
We checked with our elk specialist and he determined from the pictures that it would not be legal to harvest that animal. When we looked at the left antler, it appears that the right antler started to grow an eye guard and main beam but was injured and did not continue to produce points. On page 45 of the hunting pamphlet it gives the definition of the Spike Bull Restriction and does not meet the requirements.
If you have other questions please feel free to contact us again.
Sincerely,
Wildlife Program Customer Service

He grew the same way last year I have the pics.
-
He's probably hurt anyway, and wdfw is just trying to cover their butts. I hate when state agencies become lawyers. :bash:
If I was unemployed and could represent myself and had law training I'd shoot it and take it to court just to challenge them.

Here you go h20 this is for you.

People on Huntwa: Could you be clear about your practicing habits since we can't see you practice?
H20: Anybody tell you that I missed practice... If, If, if D-rock say I missed practice, and y'all hear it, then that's that.
I mean, I might have missed one practice this year but if, if somebody say he doesn't come to practice, it could be one practice. Out of all the practices this year, that's enough... that's enough to get a whole lot started. I told D-rock that you don't have to give the elk of taneum a reason to think about fearing me or anything like that. If you fear somebody, you fear them to make the team better...simple as that. I'm cool with that. I'm all about that. The elk in taneum deserve to have a winner. It's simple as that. It goes further than that ...
People on Huntwa: So you and D-rock got caught up on Saturday about practice?
H20: If I can't practice, I can't practice man. If I'm hurt, I'm hurt. I mean ... simple as that. It aint about that... I mean its... Its not about that... At all. You know what I'm saying I mean...
But its...its easy ... to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about practice. We're sitting in here, and I'm supposed to be the rookie elk hunter, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we're talking about practice, not a hunt, not a hunt, not a hunt, we talking about practice. Not a hunt. Not, not ... Not the hunt that I go out there and die for and sit on stand like it's my last. Not the hunt, but we're talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? ...
And we talking about practice. I know I supposed to be there. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And i'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do...
But we're talking about practice man. What are we talking about? Practice? We're talking about practice, man. (laughter from the huntwa crowd) We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We aint talking about the hunt.(more laughter) We're talking about practice, man. When you come to the woods, and you see me hunt, you see me hunt don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about practice right now. We talking about pr... (Interrupted)
People on Huntwa: But it's an issue that D-rock continues to raise?
H20: Man look, I hear you... it's funny to me too, I mean it's strange... it's strange to me too, but we're talking about practice man, we're not even talking about the hunt... the actual hunt, when it matters... We're talking about practice ...
People on Huntwa: Is it possible that if you practiced, you would kill an elk?
H20: How the hell can I kill an elk better by practicing?
-
Frank......you lost me on that one......I know its legal and all but at lunch?
-
Frank......you lost me on that one......I know its legal and all but at lunch?
If you were a better sports fan you'd get the reference.
...not a kill, not a real spike/cow kill, but practice... we talking 'bout practice. :chuckle:

I get this feeling that you actually know his name... But are afraid to admit it...

If I was any kind of sports fan...alas.......I'm kinda lame.......Buckmark took pity on me and sent a nice little video clip.
Stang.......are you really not taking a rifle? Really?
Oh........he knows....
-
Oh yeah.
-
Oh........he knows....
I'm sure he does. Any archer dedicated to his craft would know his name. He is probably a bigger legolas fanboy than my wife. And lemme tell you, that's a high bar to match.

If I did shoot a bear on the way in, the gf wouldn't want to go home. And if I get an opportunity on the way out, I'll have hiked a rifle the entire time and dont want the extra weight. Plus, I'm not sure my gf wants to pack out a bear with me. We might need more conditioning to get to that state.
-
Okay....the success of any good relationship is compromise............she carries the rifle on the way in and you promise to not shoot anything. The second to last do you get the go ahead to blast critters. You carry the heaviest load possible on the way out. Bear hide gets made into a rug, you build a fireplace in that new house, you will be engaged/married by the time the rug is done, babies are produced upon said rug and you can look back on the hike and hunt with love and admiration in each others eyes.
Hows that?

I have been a lurker on this site for quite awhile but love this. Reminds me of my elk hunting days in the 70's. I was a rookie and then became the old timer. I was lucky enough to hunt the Blues back in the good old days. Helped pack out a couple of big 7x7's out of the watershed, that made a man out of you or killed you quick, but never drew the tag myself. We had a cast of characters in our camp and I lived for that 2 weeks every year. Later on I hunted Idaho, Montana, Colorado and BC. Just want to congratulate you on making this an enjoyable read and look forward to the escapades at camp and some good field pics of the harvests. SBlacktail.

Hey guys. I just got a bow combo with 6 arrows from Cabelas (well, only five left - one went through the drywall in my ceiling and I haven't found it in the attic insulation yet). What time are we meeting up to hunt some elks? :dunno:
-
What happens if you catch an elks? :chuckle:
-
Seriously, batteries, cosmos and blankies, sounds like you guys are putting on a production of Sex in the city.. :dunno:
-
What happens if you catch an elks? :chuckle:
First I'll take my new Cabela's bone saw and cut off any extra tines it wasn't supposed to have. Then I'll pose with it. Been practicing my dead elks poses. Then maybe cut it up with my new Cabela's Rambo knife with the compass on the handle so I can cut it up and put it on the little styrofoam trays with cling wrap, I guess.
I think I'm going to need to borrow some sharp arrow points from somebody in camp.
-
Ive got two hunting arrows..you can borrow one.

What. ...arrow is an arrow. Sled has only lost one in the attic....he is ready.

:chuckle:
You better hang onto your backup arrow. After use the first on an elk, you'll need it for your second bear.
Good luck out there fellas.
-
Ok, the best way to get an elk is to go up at midnight, go deep in the forest and sit there with a burlap bag.. Your buddies will run around and scare the elk. The elk will actually crawl into bag (they are dumb animals). Don't be surprised when they tell you about this strategy. :chuckle:

They must serve there apprenticeship properly.

D-Rock shot a baby that I let pass 30 minutes before. I could've packed out both hind quarters at the same time, but I didn't want to embarrass him in front of the "non rookies" in camp.
As far as this rookie's status goes, I've never seen a TV in camp prior to this season... and I had to work this week...
On a positive note, that elk should be tender and succulent and the hide will look good, spots and all.
-
Yeah...what he said. We simply didn't want D to look bad........
-
Whatever boys I'm a straight up elk killing ninja.
-
If it's brown it's down baby!!!
-
I waited 4 days for you guys to kill one before I had to take matters into my own hands. I could've killed that cow I drew on opening day but I thought to myself WWTD.
-
T would not have shot one with spots. The "if its brown its down" fails to apply to your elk with WHITE spots...
in WWTD land, "if its brown with white spots its down" is not a valid rule to live by, as spotted owls fall into that category (as well as calf elk) and the only people who can shoot those are the feds... :chuckle:
-
Whatever boys I'm a straight up elk killing ninja.
Yep...I will agree...you are the elk ninja......
I enjoyed camp. I wanted to get a few things done. I wanted to draw my bow on a legal animal. Granted, it was first day of elk season and it was a bear but it was fun. He walked in along a blow down, stood at the end of the log dead on a 40 yards facing me, spun on a dime, and walked away on the same log. He never offered a broadside target but it was exciting to draw on a bear regardless. I wanted to get out a bit and explore and learn the area. Done. D-Rock has talked about the area for some time and it shows that it takes years to learn even small parts of it. I took it pretty easy on the exploring the first day or two and then got out and about a bit. Some rugged up and down, open grassy meadows, dark nasty timber, and open old growth. I wanted to help pack out an elk. Done. D-Rock shot his cow in a perfect place for a rookie to get hands on expereince and understand that these are not deer. They are deceptively big even for a cow. When shooting one down in a hole it takes a team to effeciently skin, qtr, and pack out. I carried the front qtrs and got the luxury of the head the last 1/3 of the way. It was as I expected. A lot of work. However, for a buddy, I'd do it again. Granted...I think once a day hauling meat is about my limit but I'd like to give it a shot. I wanted to be part of camp and maybe get invited back. Being a trailer mooch the main thing I could bring was food, maybe some beers, pitch in where I could. With the wifes help I was able to bring some good meals that fed us pretty well. The pot pies were great, the huge lasagna was good as well....and Stangs salmon on my last night in camp was awesome. When leaving I shook a few hands and was givin the green light that I was welcome back in camp.
I sure didn't expect the weather fluctution that we had. There were some massive thunderstorms that would come and go. Huge rolling thunder and lighting that you could feel through your ribs. I caught a few extra hours of sleep midweek while the rain came to a stop. The boys headed out and I took an extra few hours in the rack. Felt great when I headed out and gave me a nice boost for the next few days. I know.....I know.....you heard......I didn't sleep in every day. Crazy.
We got to chase a masher muley, hear elk bugle in the distance as the sun come up, share a camp with good and new friends, smell some elk, see some elk, see deer every day, explore new ground, get away and hunt.
I'm looking forward to the next chance I get to join them again. You don't have to kill an elk to have a good camp....but I'd sure like to stick one next time.
-
That's cool h20 nice story and sounds like a great camp. You still have a chance to stick one in the late season
-
Well....two things...I won't be able to get out late season and without D-Rock and Stang around to abuse me it just wouldn't be the same.
-
:yeah:
-
Nice writeup H20, i dont even have a smart comment for you....
-
He forgot to mention his daily naps.
-
Oh yeah did you guys see this?
-
Pretty cool camp. Someday I will get one setup. I got 2 nephews moving out here that I can use for pack hounds next year.
-
How about this one
-
Man that cow looks huge. Be eating that one for a while.

Daily late morning naps are awesome.
-
Man that cow looks huge. Be eating that one for a while.
It only looks huge because D-Rock is about the same size as a middle school boy on the soccer team (too small for JV football).
-
Way to small for JV......
However...he is the elk ninja....three years in a row in that unit...pretty steller.....better than you or I did!
Did we hear if his dad or any of the other guys have tagged?
-
Nothing as of yesterday
-
Oh yeah did you guys see this?
Worlds biggest cow or worlds smallest archer not sure which it's like looking in a funny mirror I can't figure it out.
Just mess'n with you d-rock bc I'm jealous of your elk killing ninja skills.
-
Elk OT...Sunday only. Going to give it one last shot.
-
You heading over for a one day.....an overnight? Heading down to the timber where D shot his?
-
The elk ninja knows where to go.
-
Elk ninja now

I think I'm going recurve only next year it just getting to easy.

You should really challenge yourself next year. Maybe you just use nunchucks. :dunno:

Ever see that survival show called Naked and Afraid? To truly test his skills he needs to get down to the bare essentials. D-Rock could be the Naked Ninja! :yike:

Didn't he share a trailer with Stang at Elk camp? :dunno:

I did. We talked long into the night about things like puppies and feelings.
Side note.....if you ever find a better trailer for the $$ than you will be the trailer ninja........he made out like a bandit!

I don't need much of a trailer for elk camp. I have a 1968 Excel that I paid $500 dollars for about 10 years ago. Fit's my needs fine and I've easily got my money's worth out of it.
