Title: rookie elk hunter in camp this year.
Post by: D-Rock425 on January 22, 2013, 10:25:58 AM
H20hunter will be joining my elk hunting party this September.   He has never elk hunted that I know of so I'm leaving it up to hunt wa members should I take baby steps with him or just drop him off at the deep end of the pool?

Very nice of you D-Rock.  Wish I had that opportunity of being offered to learn something new to hunt.  I say use the time to teach him the in and outs of everything you can about elk hunting.  I know I would someday return the same offer if it was me.

H20 good luck

Drop me off baby!

Beginners luck is what I'm counting on. I've got points...putting in for a bull permit.....putting my soon to be new to me bow to use....you name it I'm game!

Already told the bro in law he is coming with us this summer to hang stands and do prep work. An extra pair of hands and strong back is always good.

He's a big boy.  Dump him in the deep end and let him sink or swim.  My experience with newbie bull hunters is that it'll take him a few years to get the right mindset unless he just lucks onto one or you spoon feed him to a bull.

I say drop him off in the deep end..........then help him pack out his elk.  :chuckle:

I'm expecting to be spoon fed a bull, have everyone else pack it out, then cook me a backstrap dinner while D-Rock pours me a bourbon over some fresh chopped glacier ice.

Oh....and I will not be bringing any knives and I'm afraid of blood.

I may joke but I am stoked. I'll help anyone haul elk, I'll gut 'em....whatever it takes.

Not sure of the success rate in your area D-Rock, but in my unit it's 8%.  That means a lot of disappointed hunters.  My camp and I do alright every year, but a lot of work goes into that success.

So H20,  hope for the best but don't be surprised if all you get is a workout this fall.

Post by: D-Rock425 on January 22, 2013, 10:39:51 AM
I'm kinda banking on his beginners luck.  He'll probably get drawn for a bull permit than shoot a nice 350 inch bull opening morning.

Nonsense......It's a slam dunk!

I've had many a trip turn into a workout. I'd go back and do every one of 'em again.

H20, Apple Pie in Elk camp does help with the sore muscles.

It can also be used as a tool the evening before the hunt to make others sleep in while you get out the next morning.  I did employ that tactic this season and it worked well on the adjoining camp.

I'm not sure of success rate either but in the last 10 years ive killed 8 elk.  Witch is way above the norm for archery hunters.  He should have plenty of opportunity what he does with them will be up to him.

Post by: Skillet on January 22, 2013, 10:53:16 AM
Deep end him.  Stop at the end of a spur, point in the general uphill direction and say "There's a legal bull right up there, I can smell him.  Have him back here at the landing in two hours."

And when you come back 8 hours later,  I wouldn't wager against H20 sitting on a pile of bloody game bags having an attitude about having to haul that elk back down on the double because he was thinking he might be 15 minutes late and miss his ride.  Just be prepared for that and have that bourbon with you.

Of course I'm used to hunting Rosies on the OP.  Your country would look a little sparse when compared to mine.  Whole different type of hunting between the two areas.

What exactly did D-Rock promise you in this camp H20?  White Lightning and Banjo music?  If you hear Banjo music, run!

I make a decent porter and meat sherpa. Promises? Nothing much....a double sleeping bag, starlit nights, candles...the usual for elk camp.

H20, I think I remember that you like to use the Hello Kitty product when it comes to hunting and shooting.  Is this the same model bow you use?

Title: Re: rookie elk hunter in camp this year.

Title: Re: rookie elk hunter in camp this year.
Post by: h20hunter on January 24, 2013, 07:44:30 AM
Nope.....my Kitty bow has different fletching on the stick things the fling out of it. See, I had and extra pink boa lying around that wasn't seeing much use so i snipped some of the fluffy off and used that to fletch the arrows. That way...when they go flying...the pink strands flow like the mane on my favorite Horseland character.

Rookies usually are required to clean up up for everyone after all meals (wash dishes etc).  Also they make sure there are cold beverages ready after the days hunt for the camp vetrans.   ;)

The people in question are members here, but any way they showed on an afternoon a couple days into the season. They also showed just a couple of minutes after I had stepped out of the truck, marched off the side of the road and with extreme grace and precision missed a cow standing broadside at 150yds that was less than 1/4 mile from camp. While checking for blood I saw their rig and mentioned something along the lines of "I bet that's them 'censored word' coasties" into the radio that they were listening on.  :chuckle:

Dont worry h20hunter these weirdos are all rifle hunters.  They just hang around camp and take their rifles for short walks every once in a while.   Most of their time is spent doing the activities noted above.  Bow hunters are simply different.

Ugh?  Don't you spend your day sitting in a blind napping until something walks by?  Short walks are better than no walks.

JK D-Rock, you and I have had our share of success with the bulls.  Part of the reason I do well is that I'm farther in than most of the hunters in my area.  I would love to see H20 close the deal.  Now well see if he can...

As I type this I'm putting the finishing touches on some backstrap from this last seasons bull.  Tasty...

Stang is not a elk hunting rookie just an archery elk rookie.

But archery is much easier than the knife I normally use, so I anticipate no real concerns.

One time I threw a knife at an elk 200 yards away running over a hill AWAY FROM ME, one toss, one kill.

I'm sure archery will prove to be a non-issue with my extensive primal predatory skills.  If I can ambush out of a treestand, even easier.

Now, tell me hunting with knives isn't ethical...  It is how they butcher sheep, no bullets, just knives. (serious)

However....not to rehash it totally......My opinion is that until you see him at 40 yards and can put some glass on him we won't know.

When you do put glass on him make sure there is no doubt in your mind before you stick him.  There is no elk worth your hunting privileges or the hassle you might have in court fighting a citation based on WDFW definition.

Something along the line of "well by definition that dull would be legal but we don't like successful hunters and that elk would feed some of the new wolves we released in the area.

Stang, this pretty much states WDFW's stance.  Their elk specialist made the call on this animal.  Contact the undersigned if you want to dig deeper with them.

Dear Mr. H20Hunter,

Thank you for contacting the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

We checked with our elk specialist and he determined from the pictures that it would not be legal to harvest that animal.  When we looked at the left antler, it appears that the right antler started to grow an eye guard and main beam but was injured and did not continue to produce points.  On page 45 of the hunting pamphlet it gives the definition of the Spike Bull Restriction and does not meet the requirements.

If you have other questions please feel free to contact us again.

Sincerely,

Wildlife Program Customer Service

He's probably hurt anyway, and wdfw is just trying to cover their butts.  I hate when state agencies become lawyers. :bash:

If I was unemployed and could represent myself and had law training I'd shoot it and take it to court just to challenge them.

People on Huntwa: Could you be clear about your practicing habits since we can't see you practice?

H20: Anybody tell you that I missed practice... If, If, if D-rock say I missed practice, and y'all hear it, then that's that.

I mean, I might have missed one practice this year but if, if somebody say he doesn't come to practice, it could be one practice. Out of all the practices this year, that's enough... that's enough to get a whole lot started. I told D-rock that you don't have to give the elk of taneum a reason to think about fearing me or anything like that. If you fear somebody, you fear them to make the team better...simple as that. I'm cool with that. I'm all about that. The elk in taneum deserve to have a winner. It's simple as that. It goes further than that ...

People on Huntwa: So you and D-rock got caught up on Saturday about practice?

H20: If I can't practice, I can't practice man. If I'm hurt, I'm hurt. I mean ... simple as that. It aint about that... I mean its... Its not about that... At all. You know what I'm saying I mean...

But its...its easy ... to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about practice. We're sitting in here, and I'm supposed to be the rookie elk hunter, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we're talking about practice, not a hunt, not a hunt, not a hunt, we talking about practice. Not a hunt. Not, not ... Not the hunt that I go out there and die for and sit on stand like it's my last. Not the hunt, but we're talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? ...

And we talking about practice. I know I supposed to be there. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And i'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do...

But we're talking about practice man. What are we talking about? Practice? We're talking about practice, man. (laughter from the huntwa crowd) We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We aint talking about the hunt.(more laughter) We're talking about practice, man. When you come to the woods, and you see me hunt, you see me hunt don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about practice right now. We talking about pr... (Interrupted)

People on Huntwa: But it's an issue that D-rock continues to raise?

H20: Man look, I hear you... it's funny to me too, I mean it's strange... it's strange to me too, but we're talking about practice man, we're not even talking about the hunt... the actual hunt, when it matters... We're talking about practice ...

People on Huntwa: Is it possible that if you practiced, you would kill an elk?

H20: How the hell can I kill an elk better by practicing?

If I did shoot a bear on the way in, the gf wouldn't want to go home.  And if I get an opportunity on the way out, I'll have hiked a rifle the entire time and dont want the extra weight.  Plus, I'm not sure my gf wants to pack out a bear with me.  We might need more conditioning to get to that state.

Okay....the success of any good relationship is compromise............she carries the rifle on the way in and you promise to not shoot anything. The second to last do you get the go ahead to blast critters. You carry the heaviest load possible on the way out. Bear hide gets made into a rug, you build a fireplace in that new house, you will be engaged/married by the time the rug is done, babies are produced upon said rug and you can look back on the hike and hunt with love and admiration in each others eyes.

Hows that?

I have been a lurker on this site for quite awhile but love this.  Reminds me of my elk hunting days in the 70's.  I was a rookie and then became the old timer.  I was lucky enough to hunt the Blues back in the good old days.  Helped pack out a couple of big 7x7's out of the watershed, that made a man out of you or killed you quick, but never drew the tag myself.  We had a cast of characters in our camp and I lived for that 2 weeks every year.  Later on I hunted Idaho, Montana, Colorado and BC.  Just want to congratulate you on making this an enjoyable read and look forward to the escapades at camp and some good field pics of the harvests.  SBlacktail.

First I'll take my new Cabela's bone saw and cut off any extra tines it wasn't supposed to have.  Then I'll pose with it.  Been practicing my dead elks poses.  Then maybe cut it up with my new Cabela's Rambo knife with the compass on the handle so I can cut it up and put it on the little styrofoam trays with cling wrap, I guess.

I think I'm going to need to borrow some sharp arrow points from somebody in camp.

Ok, the best way to get an elk is to go up at midnight, go deep in the forest and sit there with a burlap bag.. Your buddies will run around and scare the elk. The elk will actually crawl into bag (they are dumb animals). Don't be surprised when they tell you about this strategy.  :chuckle:

D-Rock shot a baby that I let pass 30 minutes before.  I could've packed out both hind quarters at the same time, but I didn't want to embarrass him in front of the "non rookies" in camp.

As far as this rookie's status goes, I've never seen a TV in camp prior to this season... and I had to work this week...

On a positive note, that elk should be tender and succulent and the hide will look good, spots and all.

T would not have shot one with spots.  The "if its brown its down" fails to apply to your elk with WHITE spots...

in WWTD land, "if its brown with white spots its down" is not a valid rule to live by, as spotted owls fall into that category (as well as calf elk) and the only people who can shoot those are the feds... :chuckle:

Whatever boys I'm a straight up elk killing ninja.

Yep...I will agree...you are the elk ninja......

I enjoyed camp. I wanted to get a few things done. I wanted to draw my bow on a legal animal. Granted, it was first day of elk season and it was a bear but it was fun. He walked in along a blow down, stood at the end of the log dead on a 40 yards facing me, spun on a dime, and walked away on the same log. He never offered a broadside target but it was exciting to draw on a bear regardless. I wanted to get out a bit and explore and learn the area. Done. D-Rock has talked about the area for some time and it shows that it takes years to learn even small parts of it. I took it pretty easy on the exploring the first day or two and then got out and about a bit. Some rugged up and down, open grassy meadows, dark nasty timber, and open old growth. I wanted to help pack out an elk. Done. D-Rock shot his cow in a perfect place for a rookie to get hands on expereince and understand that these are not deer. They are deceptively big even for a cow. When shooting one down in a hole it takes a team to effeciently skin, qtr, and pack out. I carried the front qtrs and got the luxury of the head the last 1/3 of the way. It was as I expected. A lot of work. However, for a buddy, I'd do it again. Granted...I think once a day hauling meat is about my limit but I'd like to give it a shot.  I wanted to be part of camp and maybe get invited back. Being a trailer mooch the main thing I could bring was food, maybe some beers, pitch in where I could. With the wifes help I was able to bring some good meals that fed us pretty well. The pot pies were great, the huge lasagna was good as well....and Stangs salmon on my last night in camp was awesome. When leaving I shook a few hands and was givin the green light that I was welcome back in camp.

I sure didn't expect the weather fluctution that we had. There were some massive thunderstorms that would come and go. Huge rolling thunder and lighting that you could feel through your ribs. I caught a few extra hours of sleep midweek while the rain came to a stop. The boys headed out and I took an extra few hours in the rack. Felt great when I headed out and gave me a nice boost for the next few days. I know.....I know.....you heard......I didn't sleep in every day. Crazy.

We got to chase a masher muley, hear elk bugle in the distance as the sun come up, share a camp with good and new friends, smell some elk, see some elk, see deer every day, explore new ground, get away and hunt.

I'm looking forward to the next chance I get to join them again. You don't have to kill an elk to have a good camp....but I'd sure like to stick one next time.

That's cool h20 nice story and sounds like a great camp.  You still have a chance to stick one in the late season

Well....two things...I won't be able to get out late season and without D-Rock and Stang around to abuse me it just wouldn't be the same.

It only looks huge because D-Rock is about the same size as a middle school boy on the soccer team (too small for JV football).

Way to small for JV......

However...he is the elk ninja....three years in a row in that unit...pretty steller.....better than you or I did!

Did we hear if his dad or any of the other guys have tagged?

Ever see that survival show called Naked and Afraid?  To truly test his skills he needs to get down to the bare essentials.  D-Rock could be the Naked Ninja!    :yike:

I did. We talked long into the night about things like puppies and feelings.

Side note.....if you ever find a better trailer for the $$ than you will be the trailer ninja........he made out like a bandit!

I don't need much of a trailer for elk camp.  I have a 1968 Excel that I paid $500 dollars for about 10 years ago.  Fit's my needs fine and I've easily got my money's worth out of it.
