If it is legal (Hatchery) fish and it is a good fish I bleed it and put it on my stringer.
I have been given away lots of steelhead lately and I handed a lot to a buddy to smoke it. I took 30% home he took the rest. I can always find someone to take a fish or two.
So what do you do with your extra fish?
-
no such thing as "extra" fish with me if i catch them im going to eat them in some manner, either smoke, bbq quickly after catch or they go in the freezer for eating later in the year.
-
Canned Steelhead is awesome. It's easy to do to. You'll never buy tuna again. I like it either straight for sandwiches or put some jalapeno slices in there for spicy steelhead. That goes good on a cracker with cream cheese.
-
I give about half to friends, neighbors, family, clients ...........there is nothing better than sharing your catch with people you like. I smoke all pinks and make salmon spread for work lunches ,almost 100% of kings, steelheads ,rock fish and tuna gets frozen and consumed throughout the year .......

Can I be one of your friendly charity cases? :chuckle: The only steelhead I ever caught, I had to let go. >:(
-
It is just my wife and I now since the kids moved out. Son is at WSU, Daughter is at North Seattle.
I had no room in our freezer so I started rotating the fish, then went to giving them away. I can only eat so much fish. I like the idea of canning it.
-
Smoke it when the freezer piles up, give most of it away and I release more than I keep

I am not driving to your location... BUT, you are in the wheel house of steelhead.
-
Hunt it sounds like you need a bigger freezer to me!!!!!!! :chuckle: I like to bleed my fish and than filet them out vac seal them all and once the freezers are full have the old man smoke them up! Nothing beats smoked fish!

we tend to shoot big carp, fabulous explosions with a 300 savage. :chuckle: coyotes need to eat too.
-
I let my extras go to continue a population and let others have enjoyment catching a few. Do give a few to family and friends but don't keep just to keep.
We can only eat so much with all the other game that comes in.
-
I let my steelhead go or I keep them if somebody wants them..I will not eat steelhead that has swam 500 miles and been in the river for 5 months ..the other white meat ronde steelhead :chuckle:
-
Smoke em! ;) ... We've actually kept some darkies that had surprisingly red meat and smoked up amazingly
-
Release them. I only keep what I need and a few to give away. No need to fill the freezer with fish that I won't use.
-
i gereraly put the fish back into the water. hahaha what i do keep i take some of it and give the rest to my family. peanut butter cookies is a favorite of mine so i like to trade cookies for fish to people haha. I have gained about 10 pounds because of this haha.
-
I keep everything now, living on my own I can always use them now. Used to release alot of hatchery fish but not anymore

Not when they feel like a slug when you pick them up :yike:
-
what is extra? :dunno: if by chance we have this so called "extra" fish, it usually goes back to the freezer for crab bait

... I still release wild, rarely anything else unless it's started it's zombie-phase. I'm not a fish snob yet ;) maybe when I'm a whole lot better haha.
-
I use fish as a thank you for people who let me have access to their property to hunt or fish. They are always grateful and it improves my chances for next year.
-
I still fish for food not sport. I only keep enough fish that I know will be enough to feed the family for the winter and then I stop fishing. So extra fish is not an issue.
-
All my "extras" get smoked. Funny how many new friends you have when the smoker is running.

Hahah they start coming out of the woods with their noses in the air *sniff sniff* "what's that delicious smell...??" ... yea smoked fish definitely don't last long enough!
-
I really like salmon fishing but don't like eating salmon unless its smoked and I am not good at smoking them. So I do give a lot of salmon away to friends and family that don't fish but love to eat fish. I love to eat any kind of cod, halibut, perch and crappie. Matter a fact I am taking about 30 to 40 pounds of silver fillets to my butcher today after work to have them smoked for me. Love that smoked salmon.

isnt it, all the sudden people who never say hi to you, start in with
"you should give me some of that"
so i reply with "who are you?"
:chuckle:

that is a wee bit funny huh? when i moved to were i do now i didnt know anyone and i was smoking some jerkey and i meet all of them pretty fast once word spread around that i made jerkey.
-
I end up giving my extra fish away to all my neighbors. Its funny sometimes because they all come running out to see what I got every time I get home from fishing. They cant wait to get the fish. :chuckle:
-
I am one of those who thinks you should kill every hatchery fish you can get your hands on. So, I end up giving away a lot. It isn't hard to give away fresh fish. I also smoke some, but need to start canning.
-
i sooo wish i had this problem so i could actually part of this discussion. who,d a thunk, to many fish?
-
i would like to start canning fish but not sure what i need to get started

A pressure cooker and a smoker if you want to can smoked fish. Pretty easy actually, just follow the canning times and temps carefully, longer and hotter is better than colder.
-
i have a smoker. it works good just takes like 12 hours to do jerkey i need to buy a new element for it. can you can lingcod and sea bass also ir just red meat fish?
-
I also can any excess fish. Salmon and Tuna are both outstanding and razor clams are out of this world. The tuna I just do plain but I put a little bit of smoke on the salmon. Clams get Iceman's razor clam recipe. I will even thaw out anything from the freezer more than a year old and can.
Never tried canning cod or rockfish. That doesn't last too long in our house.
-
I don't think the drier white meat fish woulod can very well, but I have not tried it.

Razor clam recipe you say? ...do go on :) ... I'll most likely be going out for this weekend's dig. I like new recipes and new ideas on these lil bad boys.

I do! There is always a use for them or someone that will take them.
-
I never have extra.....I catch and process, make sure the neighbors and family gets some....eat....nothing ever left!

ICEMAN's Smoked Razor Clam Recipe. This is outstanding. I do this only with the siphons. The diggers get vacuum sealed and frozen for clam fries.
-
We can and smoke alot of fish, and try to have it once or twice a week for dinner, but...
Every year we give quite a bit of fish to people we know, that we feel will benifit from it. Nothing like seeing someones expression when you offer them a few fillets and you show up to give them a few grocery bags full. Alot of times I see canned goods, pies, breads and such given to me as a thanks.
-
I find that the crab/salmon/ling that finds its way to the neighbors has a very karma like affect when I'm rinseing a bear off in the front yard. Nobody seems to mind my antics.
-
I give away a lot. Usually to the guys fishing with me and are helping to split up the fuel bill, I try to make it as worth while as possible for them plus I can have fresh fish most of the summer, the frozen stuff just tends to sit in the freezer. Also saves me a lot of time since I no longer have to process it.
-
I agree with your statement. If I freeze it it stays frozen. That is why I started to give it away and I handed a cardboard box full of fish to a friend to smoke. So for now on I will keep a good one and get it all prepared for a special occasion.
-
I will cook it for all the employees that work for me. I enjoy it and so do they.
