Title: What do you do with your extra fish?
Post by: TheHunt on January 22, 2013, 06:29:09 PM
If it is legal (Hatchery) fish and it is a good fish I bleed it and put it on my stringer.

I have been given away lots of steelhead lately and I handed a lot to a buddy to smoke it.  I took 30% home he took the rest.  I can always find someone to take a fish or two.

So what do you do with your extra fish?

no such thing as "extra" fish with me if i catch them im going to eat them in some manner, either smoke, bbq quickly after catch or they go in the freezer for eating later in the year.

Canned Steelhead is awesome.  It's easy to do to.  You'll never buy tuna again.  I like it either straight for sandwiches or put some jalapeno slices in there for spicy steelhead.  That goes good on a cracker with cream cheese.

I give about half to friends, neighbors, family, clients ...........there is nothing better than sharing your catch with people you like. I smoke all pinks and make salmon spread for work lunches ,almost 100% of kings, steelheads ,rock fish and tuna gets frozen and consumed throughout the year .......

It is just my wife and I now since the kids moved out.  Son is at WSU, Daughter is at North Seattle.

I had no room in our freezer so I started rotating the fish,  then went to giving them away.  I can only eat so much fish.  I like the idea of canning it.

Smoke it when the freezer piles up, give most of it away and I release more than I keep

I let my extras go to continue a population and let others have enjoyment catching a few. Do give a few to family and friends but don't keep just to keep.
We can only eat so much with all the other game that comes in.

Release them.  I only keep what I need and a few to give away.  No need to fill the freezer with fish that I won't use.

I use fish as a thank you for people who let me have access to their property to hunt or fish. They are always grateful and it improves my chances for next year.

I still fish for food not sport. I only keep enough fish that I know will be enough to feed the family for the winter and then I stop fishing. So extra fish is not an issue.

I really like salmon fishing but don't like eating salmon unless its smoked and I am not good at smoking them.  So I do give a lot of salmon away to friends and family that don't fish but love to eat fish.  I love to eat any kind of cod, halibut, perch and crappie.  Matter a fact I am taking about 30 to 40 pounds of silver fillets to my butcher today after work to have them smoked for me.  Love that smoked salmon.

I am one of those who thinks you should kill every hatchery fish you can get your hands on.  So, I end up giving away a lot.  It isn't hard to give away fresh fish.  I also smoke some, but need to start canning.

A pressure cooker and a smoker if you want to can smoked fish.  Pretty easy actually, just follow the canning times and temps carefully, longer and hotter is better than colder.

I also can any excess fish.   Salmon and Tuna are both outstanding and razor clams are out of this world.  The tuna I just do plain but I put a little bit of smoke on the salmon.  Clams get Iceman's razor clam recipe.  I will even thaw out anything from the freezer more than a year old and can.

Never tried canning cod or rockfish.  That doesn't last too long in our house.

ICEMAN's Smoked Razor Clam Recipe.  This is outstanding.  I do this only with the siphons.  The diggers get vacuum sealed and frozen for clam fries.

We can and smoke alot of fish, and try to have it once or twice a week for dinner, but...
Every year we give quite a bit of fish to people we know, that we feel will benifit from it. Nothing like seeing someones expression when you offer them a few fillets and you show up to give them a few grocery bags full. Alot of times I see canned goods, pies, breads and such given to me as a thanks.

I find that the crab/salmon/ling that finds its way to the neighbors has a very karma like affect when I'm rinseing a bear off in the front yard. Nobody seems to mind my antics.

I give away a lot. Usually to the guys fishing with me and are helping to split up the fuel bill, I try to make it as worth while as possible for them plus I can have fresh fish most of the summer, the frozen stuff just tends to sit in the freezer. Also saves me a lot of time since I no longer have to process it.

I agree with your statement.  If I freeze it it stays frozen.  That is why I started to give it away and I handed a cardboard box full of fish to a friend to smoke.  So for now on I will keep a good one and get it all prepared for a special occasion.
