Title: Best all around elk/deer caliber?
Post by: MikeC on January 28, 2013, 08:55:42 PM
All right folks I would love to hear opinions.  I mostly hunt elk here in WA and in MT.  I do a little deer hunting as well and hope to expand to other game. Currently I own a 50 cal. muzzle loader and a 300 RUM. I am looking into getting an all around rifle and have got a few answers from different gun counters but would love to here your opinions.

30/06 or 270?

Your 300 RUM is a great all around rifle. I can't imagine anything it wouldn't do. But I guess you must be looking for something lighter, and perhaps with less recoil?

I would go with a 270 Winchester or maybe a 30/06.

You really can't beat the 30/06. But if you want a little less recoil then get the 270.

7mm mag.  Great Bullet selection, great ballistics and middle of the road recoil.

You've already got an unbeatable combo, what more do you want? 338 rum?

300 weatherby should do the trick real nicely

I can't add those cool smilies and stuff using tapatalk otherwise I would have inserted one of those little chuckling guys.

Thanks for your quick replies, my buddy is looking for a rifle as well so I will share with him. Most common response seems to be 7mm and 270. Would you prefer standard or wsm? I love my 300 RUM but it beats the hell out of me and I think it causes me to jerk some of my shots.  I was thinking of having a muzzle brake installed on it here soon.

Don't ever put a brake on a hunting rifle! Your ears will hate you!! But your buddies won't be hunting near you either so it's a catch 22 ; )
If you think they kick hard I take back the 338 suggestion, what are you running through it and what kind of stock is on it?

By the time this thread reaches seven pages you will start to see some patterns. In reality any caliber from 25-06 on up to about 338 can be considered the best "all around" caliber. If recoil is a consideration I would stay with 30 caliber or smaller options. 7MM, 30-06, 270, 270 WSM are all good choices. The 300 magnums shoot harder and flatter but have more recoil. To master a caliber like the 300 RUM will take some dedicated practice to overcome flinching.

Another vote for the old school 7MM rem mag, that said my buddy shot plenty of deer and elk with his .270 and piled em up dead, same goes for another buddy who shoots a .280.

Stick to the basics.  243, 270, 30-06, 7MM, or 300 Win Mag (ammo is cheap and easy to find, plus they are prooven to do the job day in and day out).  If I was getting a gun for all you cant beat a 7MM (but I still tell my brother it a "Ladies Magnum" just to bug the crap out of him) and I don't own one myself.  If you are getting one for deer and one for elk, the 270 along with a 300 Win is a great pair of rifles.  I have two 300's, two 30-06's, a 270, and a 243 and love them all for many different reasons.

.300 Win Mag for me have not had to shoot anything more than once (unless I missed completely) including approximately eight Deer, one Bear, and one Elk (dropped him in his bed). Premium bullets, a muzzle brake, and a decelerator pad did wonders for the gun

Best All Around caliber = 30

I too am a fan of the 7 Mag.  But, I still think if we are talking best All Round Elk/Deer caliber it has to be the 30.

If we start talking cartridge that's a different debate.  I'd still probably swing to either the 30-06 or 300 Win Mag.

The rifle is a Browning A- Bolt Stainless Stalker. Nothing custom....  There are not too many ammo options for it although it has grown over the past few years. I have tried the remmington power level ammo and it definitely helps with the recoil.  My thought was to buy something smaller, if nothing else to add to the collection right.

That explains why it's hard on your shoulder.   (A Bolt)  :yike:

If I had a 300 RUM, I'd want it in a much heavier rifle.

A 7mm Rem. Mag. needs a minimum 24 inch barrel. With a 30/06 or 270, you're fine with a 22 inch barrel. Just something to think about.

Since you already have a good long range rifle, I'd go with a nice, light 270.

You got a synthetic stock on it?  A wood stock might help eat some recoil. I got the 338 rum with a wood stock, they do kick a lot, but with practice and a scope with good eye relief they can be mastered! I have  noticed a huge difference between rifles with wood stocks and synthetic.  You got a great all around flat shooting caliber that will knock the heck out of anything you point it at.  Lots of good suggestions already named for a caliber to add to your collection, which is never a bad thing! Just don't put a brake on it, they are like training wheels on a bike, you'll never really learn how to ride or shoot with one on.

It depends on how dead you want your deer or elk to be when you shoot them.  I have shot deer with my 308 winchester 88.  Dandy little gun that will let the air out of a deer or elk just fine.  If I want them really, really dead, I'll use my 7mm Mag and let them have it.  But lately I've been hunting a lot with my 50 cal.  inline muzzy.  It'll be a great caliber for deer and elk once I learn to hit what I'm shooting at.  :chuckle:

I think the 30-06 is a great one to mention, even though I've never owned one.  You can find shells where ever you travel.  Great all-purpose gun.  But I'll take my 7mm.

Own 2 7mm RM's.
I also own 6 other rifles, some bigger some smaller.  These hold down the gun safe during deer and elk season.  :chuckle:

I do take the 270 on deer hikes and the 338 WM on elk hikes every now and then.  But neither of these go both ways, so to speak.

With the quality of bullets these days, and availabilty, i gotta say 7mm mag does it all.....and i dont have one. with all the guns i have, and have had, if i could do it all over and only choose one, it would be 7mm Mag.

I would give it to the 300 wm. So many choices in bullets and plenty of power. I am also a big 270 fan and my 270wsm would be a very close 2nd.

If you are wanting to go lighter on the recoil (which I honestly think is always a good thing to do if humanely possible) .308, .270, .280, 30-06, 7mm magnum (and even the 7mm-08 on the low end).

The above cartridges are truly Deer/Elk Combo Cartridges (which if I understand correctly is what you are looking for). There are other ones but those are the most popular chamberings and unless you are a reloader or just prefer something "different" I would go with one of those. Any of those cartridges will do the job and have recoil and muzzle blast that most hunters can tolerate. Anything above these becomes intolerable for most people (no matter how much they won't admit it)... it's not that they are afraid to shoot the gun in and of itself but most people I see trying to shoot the bigger magnums have poor shooting habits (I know I do after a few rounds). The older I get the more I lean toward shooting guns that will get the job done effectively and efficiently (i.e. least amount of recoil). Certainly thousands of elk have been killed with 25-06 and .243 but I wouldn't classify those true deer/elk combo cartridges.

If you are leaning more towards primarily elk and wanted to go a little bigger than the above chamberings I would get the .300 Win Mag (which will bring your recoil down 7-8 pounds vs the same size rifle and bullet in the 300 Ultra). The 338 is a great elk caliber but you would be over gunned for deer and back up to 300 Ultra recoil.

My personal choice for a true Deer/Elk Combo without being over gunned or under gunned???... To me it would come down to the 7mm Magnum or the 30-06. I think of all the calibers I mentioned they provide the perfect balance of manageability and performance. I would probably go with the 30-06 because I prefer .30 calibers over 7mm's...but thats just a personal preference. Both chamberings have similar recoil that is on the heavy end of manageable in hunting weight rifles and thus tolerable for most shooters. The .30-06 will probably work just fine but if you want better trajectory then obviously the 7mm Magnum is the rifle you want. The 300 Win (which I love) is manageable for some but still a little more recoil than I personally like to deal with for extended target practice on the range with a hunting weight rifle.

I currently use .308 but that is because my primary interest is deer with Elk barely on my radar.

Michael Eichelle wrote a great article called "Making the Case for the 308 Winchester:

http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/308-winchester-1.php (http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/308-winchester-1.php)

These are the shots he's made with the .308

A few noteworthy long range kills with the 308:

1: Dall sheep 763 yards. One shot.

2: Dall sheep 600 yards.

3: Bull moose 438 yards. Dropped with one shot.

4: Dall sheep 400 yards. 2 shots (only needed one)

5: Mule deer 318 yards. Dropped with one shot.

I'm personally not a 600+ yard shooter on game...(more like 400 and under) but obviously even the awesome .308 will do what you need it to do with minimal recoil (though if elk was a big one on the list I would still probably step it up on notch to the .30-06)  :twocents:.

Recoil is going to be vurtually the same, basically the same caliber, except you get a better overall BC from the .270 bullet, they both utilize the same case. Step up to the .280 and get even better BC while utilizing the same case as both the .270 ans 30-06.

Stick with the 7mm. :twocents:

I have both a 270 and 30/06. The 270 recoils less using a 130 grain bullet versus a 150 or 165 in the 30/06. Admittedly, it's not a significant difference. If you can shoot a 270, you can probably shoot a 30/06 just as well.

There's no advantage to the 280. It's a great cartridge, I'll give it that. But the 270, 280, and 30/06 are all so close they're virtually the same. What one will do so will the others.

The 280 is great if you want to shoot something that is "different" especially if you're a reloader. If you don't reload, there's no sense in paying extra for ammo that doesn't perform any better than the 270 or the 30/06.

All three utilize the same case, however the BC is better with the .270 bullet and even better with the .284 bullet.  :twocents:

If you want to try and make your current gun work, try using lighter bullets, have a limb saver recoil pad installed, or get a muzzle break installed. Even if you choose a 7mm or 300 win mag, which are both great all around rifles, to escape the recoil, you will likely need to use lighter bullets, a limbsaver, a muzzle break, or choose a smaller cartridge.

I purchased some 130 gr barnes ttsx to give a try in my .30 mags, not sure how the accuracy will be yet, but if I can find an accurate load they will be fast, flat, and not recoil badly, and with the barnes as soon as that 130 is halfway through the animal it will weigh more than most brands of 180's which come apart, so it's going to exit leaving a good hole. But I have not got the loads worked up yet to prove this, it's only a theory, but based on the performance of 165 and 150 gr bullets, and if the 130 will shoot accurately, my theory should be sound.

Having said all that, if you're not a handloader and you want a great shooting caliber with the least recoil and the most knockdown, I don't think you can beat the 280 remington. However, the catridges are a little tougher to find and that caliber is underproduced, it's hard to find that caliber of guns because more people want them than what's being produced.

For easy to find cartridges and a huge choice of guns, with coniderable less recoil than the magnums, look to the .270 or 30/06, those cartridges are always available and they will kill almost anything in N.A., deer and elk can be taken regulary out to 300 to 400 with a little practice and quality bullets.

Bottom line, the basic cartridge used for the 30/06, 280, 270, and 25/06 produces excellent results for anything from coyotes to elk with moderate recoil. Pretty tough to beat unless you want to deal with magnum recoil.

If you want something a little exotic, fast and flat with lots of shock without too much recoil (but the catridges are tougher to find), try a 257 wtby, 264 win mag, 270 short mag, or 270 wtby.

There, I did my best to make your choice even tougher.  :chuckle:

50 BMG that thing will kill anything from trucks to squirls!!! :chuckle:   I personally like the 7mm I have one and it shoots super flat.  I also have a 338 RUM that with a little bit of gun work is shooting exactly the same ballistics as the Lapua.

I like my .35 Whelen a lot.  It has dropped an elk at 425 yards, I mean dropped, not one step.  I’d use it for everything from deer to Cape buffalo if I ever got the opportunity.

Factory ammo can be pricey but I load my own into .270 or 30-06 brass which is easy to come by.

I'd say brake your 300 rum! Wear ear plugs when shooting. I have one and with a brake it is a dream to shoot. I can easily spot my own shots outside of 400 yards or so. That is unlessyou just want another gun... which is reason enough for anyone to buy one. Then I'd stick with a 7mm of some sort. Maybe a wsm...

The guys I gun hunt with myself included all have 7mags that ride in the safe now,   4 of them , me included  have now gone to the .257 Weatherby mag.
You can get a sweet vanguard in synthetic and blue for the price of an ADL.
I found a Mark V in synthetic and stainless with a burris lightseeker scope mounted  and dies for 500 bucks and a 30-06 ADL in trade on Seattle guns .net
We all have been really impressed with the round.

Alot of good choices out there , I'd say you'd have a hard time beating the 300wsm pushing a 180 accubond for a all around package . topped with a 4x12 lep. If your looking for a lightwieght package i'd look into the .270 . Savage in the 6.5x284 would be another great choice no frills just plan and great shooting. some of the 7mms i've shoot really boot ya while the wsms have less felt recoil .

I shot a buck and a cow with my 7mm Rem Mag this year (not to brag  :IBCOOL: ) Its a great round, but I don't like to shoot more than 10 rounds of it at the range. If you reload the sky is the limit. If you are into buying box ammo I would stick with a 30-06. Its much cheaper just has more drop at extended ranges.

I'm going to say either .270 or .30-06. Two reasons....I have and enjoy my .270 and you can find rounds for both anywhere you go. That is why it is the best "all around" caliber.

Paraphrasing Jack O'Conner, it depends on how good a shot you are. Also how familiar are you vital areas when looking from multiple directions.
O'Conner used a .270 for African big game and pretty much anything else.

I think .35 caliber is probably the best for both animals, individual animals would be different.  You don't have to drive it too fast to do the job on either, it doesn't require a can of powder to shoot flat and doesn't require a pinpoint perfect shot for placement.

I would have to say 30-06.
I don't currently shoot one but did for years. My current is .338 win mag for elk. Plenty of knock down power up to 400 yds.
.270 wby may for all else.  Flat shooting

If going for elk more than deer go 30-06
If going deer more than elk go 270
If going equally a 280AI

All these threads do is make me want to buy more guns!  How do you justify it to the wife to have 10 different hunting rifles?

One firearm per pair of her shoes, problem solved!

The  effectiveness of any and all calibers comes from the shooter! With that said if someone is selling any caliber for a more effective one they need there shooting skills reconditioned!  :chuckle: :stirthepot: :stirthepot:

Yep...it's a great round.....I was reading on chuckhawks.com today that the 7mm Mag is the top end of what Chuck Hawks considers "All Around Rifle Cartridges"... above that the recoil becomes intolerable for most people. The other "All-Around Cartridges" were the 270, .308 and 30-06. Great rounds like .280 and others didn't make the cut based on factors unrelated to performance.

Well isn't that interesting. :dunno: Same case as the 30-06 and better BC bullet, I would think it would actually perform pretty well compared to the 06 and .270.

Yeah....it didn't make his list for reasons other than performance.. talking strictly performance the .280 made the list no problem... It didn't make the list because of these three requirements for the purposes he was discussing:

Available in a variety of rifle types and actions
Available in major hunting centers worldwide wherever big game is hunted
Factory cartridges stocked just about anywhere centerfire ammo is sold in North America

Ah, I get it now, those reasons are spot on too, IMO.

I am really impressed with my sons .270, flat shooting and i can shoot it all day long.

I shoot a 300 win mag, i can shoot it all day long also, but i feel it.

My boy shot a cow this year right at 200 yards with his 270 and she dropped. I shot a cow @ 275 with my 300 WM and she dropped. Both worked like they were supposed to.

I am a firm believer that it is more about where you put the bullet rather than what the cross sectional density of said bullet is.

The correct answer is whatever you can shoot well enough to out that bullet right in the sweet spot every single time.

The .300 RUM is about as all around as u will ever need. i have a .270win and a .300wby mag. I dont think you can go wrong with any cartridge that falls within that range.
