Title: Whinning sound from back of truck
Post by: rudedawg1085 on January 29, 2013, 09:14:15 AM
Anyone ever have a whinning sound coming from the back on their diff case?? latley its been getting worse and wrose and the faster i go the louder it gets. I opened it up, drained the oil, but there were no metal shavings like i thought i would see, and the teeth of the gears were perfectly smooth. Also someone told me if it the pinion bearing was bad you would be able to shake the drive shaft, but its stays stiff when i try....any thoughts?

Yes, I've had this. I ran over my first wife, her dress got wrapped around the rear axle, and the whining didn't stop for, oh, about 3/4 of a mile. The same thing will happen if a liberal gets stuck there, except the whine will be a much higher pitch. I hope this was helpful.

:chuckle:Is it high or low pitch?  Sounds like a bearing.  Kind of stupid question sorry, but tires wearing down can start to hum-whine?  What kind of truck, diff.?

What kind of truck? And are you sure it's coming from the rear? Does the noise change when you make turns?

do the jack test again & use a small piece of hose  with one end up to your good ear & try to pin point the whine. is there a dust cover on the pinion yoke? seen those get bent by a kicked up rock. & still could be bearing even if the yoke is tight. also seed dry u joints squeell & resonate.??

A guy I know had something like this.  It was a differential pin.  It got loose and would make a whinning noise.  The faster the truck went the worse it got.  Never saw metal shavings in the case.  One day the pin finally dropped while the truck was in motion and completely destroyed the rear diff internals.  Locked it up too.  The tow truck had to get creative to load it up.

I had a whining/grinding noise from the differential case on my 2004 F-150 and it took them a while to find the problem.  It was actually a computer chip sending the message to go into four wheel drive but then retract because the truck was set in two wheel drive, it was a $54 part and it took them two days to find  :bash: :bash:

Had the same deal last year...turned out to be an axle bearing.

Ever find out what it was? My wife's 4runner has a whine also and I can't figure out what it is!

If the tone changes off and on the gas it's typically pinion bearings , constant noise is often a side carrier bearing . axle bearings with often show leakage or play when they get worse.

Mine turned out to be a liberal, but the whine came from the FRONT axle...for some reason!
