Title: My 2011 bear
Post by: duckmen1 on January 30, 2013, 11:34:45 AM: Don't think I ever posted this bear on here so thought I would share the story. I drew a multiseason deer tag and was going to go deer hunting with my brother who had an archery tag. Decided at the last minute to bring the rifle in hopes of seeing a bear and let him go after deer.hunted all morning with no luck. Heard a pack of coyotes at first light but could not convince them to head my way. Tried a new area that we had never been to and about 3/4 of a mile in I spotted a bear headed right for us. Told my brother to stop as I raised the rifle the bear stopped looking dead at us and I put one right into the chest at about 65 yards. He literally flipped over onto his back and roled around for a second got up and headed into the brush. He went about 30 yards into a drainage and piled up. After seeing it hit him like that I'm suprised he even got back up. Hit him perfect in the chest and destroyed everything inside. Shot with a 270 win. 150 fusion bullet. Nice boar and easy hull out except for the bees nest my brother stirred up in the fern and got me stung a few times. They didn't touch him. Nasty big black and white bees. Anyways fun trip and good eating.

Post by: duckmen1 on January 30, 2013, 12:47:50 PM: Ya I got stung three times which is usually not too big of deal but this time it got me on the inside of the arm just below the wrist and my arm from the wrist to the elbow was rock hard for about five days and started turning black and blue for two days.
Never had anything like that happen from a bee sting. The other two stings were on the shoulder. No big deal with those ones.

Came close this year to getting a bear with my bow but screwed up when drawing and had the broad head catch a limb popping the arrow off the string when the cams were rolling over. So close it was at six steps with arrow hanging in the rest. No shot taken. He ended up smelling me and took off. That sucked. Didn't notice the arrow was catching on the stick at the moment. Got so excited to have a bear that close. Cool experience though.

Looking for new ground this year for my spots are so choked out now you can't see anything in the reprod. And that's all the whole area is now.

Post by: JM on January 30, 2013, 03:44:41 PM: Those black and white hornets that stung you are called Bald Hornets. Really aggressive and feel like you've been branded when they sting you. Nice bear by the way

Post by: duckmen1 on February 02, 2013, 08:10:18 PM: Ya it was pretty sweet to have the rifle at that moment. I wouldn't have gotten that bear with the bow. There wouldn't have been any chance. The next trip out to that spot a couple days later my brother got his first archery kill which was a nice size doe within a few hundred yards of that spot. Wish I could post that pic with this post to but don't have a pic at this time.
Beginners luck at a new spot being as we went back in there this season and didn't see as many animals. But then again we were locked out for fire danger through early archery and good part of bear season. That was the time period we saw animals the previous season. Want to drop into the drainage in a few weeks and look for some deer sheds. It looks pretty promising. we will see. All we saw in there this year was a few does. I like the area though, just need to spend more time in there to get a better feel for the area. Plenty of grouse this season running around on the cat roads there. That's we're I took my revolver 22 sw grouse.

I sheared christmas trees as a kid and they had nests all over....splitting one of those nests in half with a binniki (weed eater with a blade on it basically) was always an UHOH moment. :tup: :bdid:
