Finally finished Sporterizing my Ruger 10/22. It has a new Boyd’s laminated thumbhole stock, a new trigger group, new Green Mountain bull barrel, Simmons 3 X 9 X 40 scope, and a 25 shot banana magazine. The receiver has been pillar bedded using a brass fitting machined to fit in the stock and a stainless steel lock-down screw. I also glass bedded the receiver and first 3 inches of the barrel using Brownell’s Acraglass Gel so the mount is rock solid and the barrel is free floating. In addition I used a second hold-down screw attaching the rear of the receiver to the stock just above the trigger mechanism. This makes the mounting very solid. Then I used Lemon Pledge furniture polish to give the stock a nice shine. Finally I used a red-laser bore sighting tool at 30 yards to zero in the scope. The laser shined on the neighbor’s garage door and I adjusted the scope elevation and windage so that the cross hairs were exactly on the red dot. This morning I took the receiver out and replaced the steel receiver pin with a nylon recoil buffer. That makes it much smoother. I should be able to put five shots in the size of a quarter at 100 yards, or so I hope.

Nice I almost went with that stock for my build . But went with the Anchutz's thumbhole instead.

Right around $500 not including the original Ruger 10/22. My son originally purchased the 10/22 about 10 years ago and I "inherited" it. You can spend much more. Fluted stainless steel barrels will set you back $200 bucks. A new fancy trigger set is around $200. A new receiver from Kidd is $200. Nicer stocks can be as much as $300. But for as little as $500 you can get yourself a great sporterized Ruger 10/22 that shoots great and looks really nice. I probably have 40 hours of work in it. Keep in mind this was the first attempt at anything like this. I fumbled through most of it, watching YouTube video's. The glass bedding was the hardest part, I screwed it up pretty bad the first time and had to redo it. Hope this helps.

My next project: The AK 47 is much maligned as an accurate rifle. I don't believe that is the case. There are many YouTube video's and web sites that tell you how to make it more accurate. I have an old AK 47 which is in really good shape. I just ordered a new collapsible stock and butt pad for around $100. I also ordered an aluminum front rail and hand guard for $90. New rubber grip was $20. New front adjustable handle was $25. A trigger rebuild kit was $35. A Harris clone bipod that mounts on the front rail was $34. I also bought a AKARS rear sight rail with picatinny rail for $120. I just got a Simmons Pro Hunter 3X9X50 scope. There are many small modifications I will make to get it to shoot more accurately. The AK was given to me so I have about $460 in it. But it will be a nice shooting and really good looking AK. While perhaps not as accurate as the AR 15 it is probably the most reliable Assault Rifle ever built.

Beautiful gun! Is that a homemade gun cleaning stand? How does it work? I'd like to see more pictures of that...looking at making one myself.

What trigger group did you go with?

If you really want to make it a tack driver you should look into getting the bolt radiused, headspace work and the firing pin pinned. It helped ALOT on mine. Here's a pic of mine

Huntandjeep: what a beautiful job on the 10/22. Yes, the next phases of the project are a new receiver, new trigger group from Volquarsten and the headspace work. I'm a bit away from that from an experience point of view. Any advice you have is greatly appreciated. This is the first such project I have undertaken, other than the modifications I did two years abo to my Mosin Nagant. That gun is due for a more serious set of modifications but that's likely a year away. As far as the gun work stand; yes it is a home made project. I'll include some pictures. I'll give dimensions if anyone is interested.

Jekemi I sent out my action to CT-precision.com to have all the work done. He put in an overtravel on the trigger, Set the trigger at 2lb's, Pinned the VQ firing pin ( makes it strike the same place everytime) radiused the actual bolt itself ( so it dosent get hung up in the action) and also jewelled the bolt (for a little more bling :tup:). There is also a guy on Rimfirecentral.com Username QUE that does bolt work. When i got my action back i installed the Volquartsen action kit. Which comes with the target trigger, disconnector, aluminum hammer bushings, auto bolt release, extended bolt handle, sear, buffer, trigger plunger (improved radius). It,s also got VQ v-block, extended mag release, and target hammer . I went way overboard on mine ( could have bought a KIDD) but o well it was fun.

Isn't it interesting what we do to guns. IE: the 10-22 Gun itself $179, take it apart and throw most of it away, Do the the bolt $100, Trigger group $200, Stock $125, Barrel $125 and up, top rail $20, buffer screws and charging handle, Now we have a $700 22 without a scope. Isn't that almost gross?
But isn't it fun to blow away 500 rats a day? JMO

Let's face it. We love guns, we love to work on guns, we love to remodel and sporterized guns. We love to shoot as accurately as possible. It's what we do. Perhaps it's in our DNA (some women get it and some don't). Creating a super accurate .22 caliber rifle out of a $180 dollar Ruger 10/22 is all part of the fun and enjoyment of the shooting sports.
