A king from probably 5 seasons ago. Went to the river 4 days after knee surgery after a break from a downhill mt bike crash. Neighbor told me that there was a sand bar to stand on after a long walk with crutches. Got down there and people were waist deep in the river. It was an underwater sandbar. After walking that far I wasn't about to turn back. No waders I decided to head in. Probably not good for stitches but hey I got my fish and was done pretty quickly. Felt good to knumb up the pain a bit anyways. i can say it is a bit difficult to hold crutches and fight a king at the same time. Limit was one king hatchery or native at the time on the skokomish. I have literally caught several thousand salmon but for some reason never take any pics of them. That will change. Kind of kicking myself for it. Same with duck hunting I see so many cool pics but never take the time to take any with as many opportunities as I get I need to take more pictures.
Cool experience

What if someone sees you leaving your rig at the gate, recognizes your face from hunt wa and comes over and gives a friendly hello? That seems more plausible to me. Its those that like to hide behind the computer screen that seem strange to me.
Here's a catch and release chinook, we had filled our limits with big kings early in the morning inshore, and headed offshore to look for coho, but couldn't keep the kings off! We must have landed a half dozen, and lost many more since we weren't wanting to use a net to catch and release the hungry girls.

To me thats a waste of meat. Im the kind of guy who still smokes and eats dark silvers and kings. The worst salmon is still more nutritious then most other fish.
-
Brown king! The other white meat!
-
They make their own gravy! :puke:
-
Ive caught quite a few kings to that people were thought were "boots" and the meat was bright red. The fish get held up at the mouth of the rivers and start to get dark, Yet the meat is still perfect because it hasnt been sitting in fresh water and started its transition period.
Check your fish before you chuck em.

Heres some
Hatchery silvers, first and 4th place LaPush derby
Big kings Lapush

The theory that fish holding in tidewater don't lose their quality is plain wrong. They are sexually maturing by the minute and the meat degrades accordingly.

Exactly. And fat reserves begin to get used up. That's why pinks are so flavorless... They have very little fat, and why kings, especially springers are especially delicious.
I just can't stand the smell of slimy dark fish. Certainly couldn't stand eating one. But, to each their own of course.
-
I'm not saying don't eat dark fish. If people enjoy them there is no reason not to eat them. I say more power to ya if you enjoy eating them!

I'm sure all those kings we got on in tidewater this year had great meat! You shoulda gave them the wood shampoo wsu!

We killed a few when I had people who don't fish much with me. The meat was a total crap shoot. Bright looking fish (relatively speaking) had white meat and darker fish had decent (not good) looking meat. You roll the dice if you decide to kill one of those, including those with sea lice.

Taste great to me. To each theyre own. and yes. Ive pulled plenty of dark fish that were bright red, ask my lady. I'm not saying don't eat dark fish. If people enjoy them there is no reason not to eat them. I say more power to ya if you enjoy eating them!

Shoulda gave em to me, as long as they're body isnt physically rotting away yet Ill still eat/smoke them. Never once regretted it.
Had a few I thought were borderline iffy though and tossed em.

Open them up? As long as you put them on your card it dont matter what you do with them. Ive seen plenty of people personaly, Not myself. Make small incisions near the middle of the fish to check for meat quality. Find out theyre no good, and release them back into the water. Happens all the time at the nisqually. Who am I to judge, Ill cut them wide open though. Cant release a fish you've already cutt up. Dont ever usually catch more then 2 kings a day anyways.
-
But then again, Ill eat almost anything as long as its legal. Im a fat boy in a skinny mans body.
-
I've heard of guys making a small incision on the tail to see what the meat looks like.
Really though, once you have caught a lot of salmon, you learn what the meat is probably like based on the condition of the fish. Just cause it looks and smells fishy, doesn't mean you should eat it...
-
does not it feel great sticking your fingers in the gills of a bright salmon :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: just saying ...it feels great to club a fish in the head and EAT IT

I had a guy give me a really dark king salmon off the Umpqua R. all the way up by Roseburg. He tried reviving it but couldn't, so he gave it to me as I walked by. I was making $60/month with a place to stay, so I didn't turn fish, any fish, down. I figured I could smoke it if it was soft, but it was still awesome, grilled, baked, and smoked, it was about 35 pounds. :)

I always hear the guys call the black ones on the Samish smokers. The quality of the fish helps in the taste of the smoked salmon. I know when they start getting really dark, I let them go.

Yep, a nice chrome wild fish and carefully c&r'd to boot (no pun intended). I still remember my first on the Cowlitz, and won't forget this one either.

That explains it. I'd rather eat a couple month old springer than a chrome bright winter steelhead. That is comparing apples and oranges to a dark fall fish.

I know the pic is horrible but it is my first salmon, and still my biggest, and best day on the water! This is my buddy, me (in the middle) and my dad. Dad still says he caught the second largest one but wouldn't we all...

I can't say its my favorite picture but it was a lot of fun to catch on the fly rod. On the sky a few years back.

Chromer
Kinda more like bronzer aye?
I like the bronze look. Had a guy give me one like that just out of Roseburg one summer (back when I was a BLM "volunteer" making 60 bucks a week), fileted up just fine for the grill and smoker.

Some of the boots are better to smoke, If I had a nice red fish I almost feel like Im wasting it on the smoker.
Ill still smoke just about anything though.
