If you are talking about the draw points for special permits, when you apply for a special permit hunt, you get 1 point in that catagory.  If you draw you lose it, if you don't, it carries over to next year so when you apply at that time you have 2 points.  Each point is like throwing your name in the additional times so to speak.  The points are "squared" each year you apply, so 1st year: 1x1=1 name in the hat, 2nd year 2x2=4 names in the hat and so on.  This is a very simple explaination, but I think it sums it up pretty good.

:yeah:That pretty much sums it up, if you go in with a partner or multiple partners on a special hunt, just add up the total amount of points between all of you and divide that by the number of you applying- that is how many points you would have going into the drawing. If the group gets drawn you all get permits, UNLESS your group outnumbers the amount of special permits left.

Point System = A gimick perpetrated by the Department of Fish and Wildlife to create an artificial demand for special permits whereby increasing application revenues for said department and inadvertantly lowering draw odds in the process.  :chuckle:

except there is nothing artificial about the demand.

I would say a lot of it IS artificial. Many people got into the "game" just because they think they MIGHT want to draw a special permit hunt 20 years from now. If it weren't for the point system they would just wait until they're ready for the hunt 20 years from now, and then apply. There wouldn't be a need to build up points.

ive got news for you Bob, you can wait 20 years if you want, hell wait 30, in the end you still won't be able to hunt branched bull in the blues without a permit, hence the "demand"

Originally, most point systems were put in place to help the really unlucky people who weren't getting drawn in simply random drawings.  Almost every state in thw west has a point system and they are almost all different from each other in their workings.

They have definately become a larger source of income for game agency's across the county.  Like a business, they are looking for NTR  (non-traditional income) and how to
'monitize' everything possible.

While I don't like it,  I play the game and have gone on hunts that I would never have gone on because of them.

I assume the 'game' will continue to change probably not to the better.

Well, maybe "artificial" isn't the correct word to use. But, the point systems do create more "demand."  I know several people who NEVER applied for special permits in Washington, until the point system started. And they have not missed a year of applying since.

lets not let WDFW off so easy. The point system was a result of the redistribution of season dates, "justified" by the winters of the early 90's.
