Title: Auction: Alex's first time on the lathe!
Post by: rainshadow1 on February 05, 2013, 05:41:33 PM
Auctioning a very nice cocobolo enclosed reed predator call... For Alex!

I'm a homeschooler, a homeschooling Dad, I homeschool....

We do stuff. We do curriculum too, of course. Actually we do kind of advanced, difficult curriculum to be specific... but we also do stuff. One of the things I've been wanting to do with the boys is some callmaking.

Alex, the oldest, is 8. 3rd grade. He has watched me do some of my work, but he's never been at the lathe himself before. Before today that is! We decided it was his time!

I told him that he could sell his call on my account, and show everybody how it went...

I stood him on a concrete block, and set him to work on a piece of cocobolo I'd previously belled and bored.

I was kinda busy while the chisels were out, but when we got to finishing, I was able to take a few photos as the progress continued...

After we were both satisfied with the shape and finish, we went to the polishing...

Once we were both satisfied with the finish, and that Alex knew why he was doing what he was doing, I went ahead and showed him how to polish the bell and mouthpiece. Then we went inside and voiced it raspy jack, and took some hero photos!

Now we're going to sell it!

Auction format:

Post below, or somehow get a message to me with a bid (email, pm, etc) and the time stamp on the message will be your bid.

Starting at $5...

We'll run the auction until Sunday, February 10th, at 2PM...

Highest bidder at that moment will own the call...

After payment is recieved, Alex and I will go to the Post Office and mail the call to the winner, taking the postage/packaging/materials cost from the purchase amount. (I told you, we homeschool!) Then he'll take a tenth out for the church, and he'll keep the Net, if any remains!

Thanks for looking and for bidding! (Appreciate your participation in my educational efforts here!)

You are teaching him right. In many important aspects of his life. Love that last picture of him with the finished call. He did a fantastic job. Thats definitley a call he can be proud of. And a kid you can be proud of.

Thx guys, appreciate it. He's very excited. Wants to go at it again asap... but all red next time! Apparently he doesn't like the sapwood as much as the rich red. (I stumbled into some amazing cocobolo stock.) The sapwood is far more rare, but hey, he's young!

It's a deeper raspy rabbit distress, but I can tune it to just about any distress voice.

Great job and parenting. Kodo's to you both. We need more parents like you. I am a little concerned about wearing  the hand boots working with a lathe tho. Signed, 4 finger Hawg

I learned how to make bowls on a lathe when I was in jr high and even bought a lathe. I wish I could have kept at it but no place to use it for now.

Keep up the good work with your son. My dad lived out of state when I was growing up but I still remember the cool things he taught me when I got to visit.

Way kinda bowls?  :yike:

:chuckle:. I made a couple big salad bowls and some plates. I would take random pieces of wood from the junk bin in wood shop and glue them together and see how it would turn out. Was allot of fun!

They flew off when it grabbed him, spun him around 6 or 8 times and threw him out the window.... we couldn't find them again so we just finished up without them... got done just before the jack booted osha agent arrived with the obamacare ambulance and the tort lawyer...

Sorry, I tend to react sarcastically to that mentality...

Funny story, I was at walmart the other day trying to return a battery core for the fee refund. This nerd in the TLE finally shows up. I tell him I have a battery core return. He says, "Just a minute." and walks through the back room door.

I follow him. I'm standing at the doorway, the pallet where they stack the old batteries is 15 feet inside the door, I'm standing there looking at it, he's nowhere to be seen.

I go back over to the counter to wait.

A full 5 minutes later, he walks back out... dressed like there's been a radioactive spill in the TLE! He's wearing an ankle length rubber apron, a shower cap, elbow length rubber gloves, full face safety goggles, and rubber boots.

As he's reaching into my cart for my dead motorcycle battery, trepidatious as a bomb squad tech, I just couldn't help myself... I said, "Careful there!!!"

Ok, still holding at 75.

I will accept silent proxy bids, you can PM or email. Send to me before the end ofthe auction, and after the auction I will bid for you in $1 increments above the next high bidder.

The email bidding by non-huntwa members makes this necessary. It's already higher than I expected, I'm going to have to incorporate some investing and saving lessons into this that I hadn't planned on!

Just in case there's more bids, I wanted to keep it fair, so anyone is allowed to silent bid, and I will tally at the end of the auction and only increase the winning bid by a single whole dollar.

Current high bid for Alex's first call is $75. Auction closes Sunday at 2pm.
