If you had a bull that would be close to making the book minimum, would you have it scored? would you be embarrassed to have it done if it didn't make it?
-
There is nothing to be embarrassed of. I say if you think its close and you want to know there is only one way to find out.
-
I would have to agree. Just because you have it scored doesn't mean you have to enter it. I have eight or nine animals around here that would be in the bottom 20% of the book including rosies (used to be ten, but I think the minimum increases have kicked one or two out). I'm proud of them all and know the score of each. I also have two animals that would be in the top 10% that I am no more and no less proud of than those at the bottom. I have not entered any of mine. But I would never give grief to anyone who does. It's just not my thing. If it happens to be your thing I say, "All the power to ya!" There are a lot of guys that will go their whole life and never harvest a minimum score animal.

One of my bulls scores 228 and something. It would have been a nice 5X5 but one brow tine was snapped clear off. Instead of scoring in the 260's it barely made book. Does not bother me.
I have another that would have been a 7x7 that scored in the 245 range, I think. Would have been over 270 but the same brow tine was snapped clear off of that.
So, things happen to alter the score of decent bulls.
In 2010 I took a 5x6. When I walked up to it I seen that the eye guards were like 7 inches long, lol. It may make the book but I am not going to have that one scored.
-
Score it! You got what sounds to be a decent rosie, not many get to do that. So what if it's not a 375 masher from AZ? The guys who hunt for them will know... Plus it's one of the best tools to size up bulls in the field:twocents:
-
Why would anyone be embarrassed.
-
You know whats embarrassing? Never having shot an elk and missing bull the last two years in a row, now thats embarrassing :chuckle: Score em, and post pics!
-
Get it scored.
-
Thanks guys. I am considering taking him to the Portland sportsman show. he is almost as tall, and is wide as my 6x6, carries more mass and the tines are longer, but he is only a 4x5. Think it would be neat for a "rag horn" to make the book
-
I go character over score 99% of the time. A 4X5 that might make book is way cool in my book  I would never even think of being embarrasses by that bull. Very cool!
-
Awesome bull. Score him.
-
Great bulls, both. I love those dark-horned euro's.
-
I would be horribly embarrassed by both those dinks. No way I would get them scored. As a matter of fact, just give me the location of your hunting area and move on to bigger an better locations. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :sry: Had to :sry:
Get them scored.

i have video of a bull just like that, when we first saw him we thought he was a 7x7..then 6x6..then 5x5..then 5x4..then 4x3
he was a whopper of a rag
get him scored and let us know..that mass will add up fast
-
Nothing to be embarrassed about. I had a 2pt blacktail scored last season and it scored 99 py points. Get him scored

I got a deer scored at the Puyallup show with similar characteristics. I knew he wouldn't make the book and really didn't care. I just like knowing the "real" score for when people ask. Same reason I weigh all my fish. Just like knowing the real number so I don't feel like I'm fudging when I relay the story. Drives me nuts when a 13 lb. fish is passed off at 18-20, etc.

Well??? what did your deer score and lets see some pics.

I shot one this year that will make it at the lower end after the drying period and deductions. It dosent really matter to me, Im just happy I killed a magnificent animal and am not embatassed in the slightest. Actually quite the opposite.

That's it..... :jacked:.....If you are gonna mention a scored animal, it is required to have a picture attached with official score. I will add mine when I get it back and have it scored. Unafficially it is mid to upper 150's (avatar pic).

Should be mandatory to weigh all bear ;) Even fish can't hold a candle to the outrageous guesses of bear weight. Most are off by at least 50%. That's why when guiding we tried to get all bear out whole and then took them to the Bumble Bee fish house to be accurately weighed. Plus it's nice to gut them while they are hanging :chuckle:

Looks like a toutle rag horn! I like it!

Good eyes! (Or guess.......) :chuckle:

Hope it makes it that's a cool bull! Pretty sure I have the previous years shed from the 4pt side. I gave it a 28" spread and figured it around 211" but it may be a different bull or he may grown some. Good job and good luck! Here's a comparison with a bull that scored 240." Regardless of the score I'd still consider that a trophy coming out of the toutle.
