Want to do my first real PD hunt this year. Not ground squirrels or sage rats real Prairie dogs. What is the closest area to Western Wa for the dogs. Don't need your hot spot just an area for good dog shooting. Seems like Montana would be the best area to start.
Thanks

Western WY south of Star Valley has some fair PD hunting and is closer than eastern MT, you might check on southern ID also.

Can only give you what I know, did it once with my grandpa and uncle 15 years ago or so,Grandpa did all the research on it and we went to Zortman Montana and hunted on the indian reservation for them.It was a kick in the pants, shot them with .22,.223,220 swift,.243,7MM,gives you a real apreciation for the power of a rifle and just how far one will shoot. We gave em the buisness out to 800 yards or more,we also whacked em in close at 50 yards, depending on how much they have been shot at dictates how far you will shoot. It was fun I will do it again some day,We went in mid may.
Went Birdhunting to great falls/fort benton/loma area and found a few dog towns while bird hunting, not near the numbers as farther east but there were some.I'll have to ask my buddy who lives near billings what the opportunities are around there and report back, that is still a pretty good poke in the rig to get there though.

Was hoping for maybe something in western or mid Montana or in that distance range. Never thought about Idaho and have no clue as to where to even start looking there. Been to Montana a few times but never thought dogs when I was there, and saw lots of maybe pd's but don't really know.

Call the Idaho DNR for info.

I asked my buddy who lives near billings and he said there are some big dog towns about an hour up the gravel from his place.

Best advice if you wanted to shoot some PDOGS...They have 2 shooting tournaments in MT one in Rapejle. See if timing right for you... I have a friend that lives North in Roundup. He knows where to go.
