Looking for a Dodge Mechanic, Live in Marysville, will pay cash or possibly trades for guns. Will pay for some travel time within reason as well. I have compressed air and a warm dry shop to work in. Thanks!

What's wrong with your truck?
-
Diesel outfitters in Marrysville can hook you up... I know your looking for some one to do "side work" But Ben is great and LOVES dodges. :twocents:
-
I suspect it is the lift pump. Problem is it is in the tank which the dealerships did as a "fix" for a short while...genious eh? I want to go back to the original configuration on the block but don't know if it will work with the failed pump in the tank or not. Then if that doesn't fix it then the injection pump next.
-
On my 03 i had a on the fram lift pump.... After it gave up the ghost i went with the in the tank option. Now if you need massive PSI increases due to significant up grades then that is one thing, HOWEVER in the tank pumps self prime and self lubricate... If you are having trouble it may be that when your lift pump went out it stressed your injector pump and now its going out. How long of a drive did you have when you figured out your lift pump wen tout the first time?

It pretty much died. Restarted then died again. I am hoping it is not the injection pump so lift pump is the place to start. I just picked the truck up as is from a friend/employee. I bought this truck new in 98, gave it to him (he worked for me) in 2001 at 95K. He didn't have the money to fix it so I bought it back from him. It has 271K on it now so it's no showpiece. I've had this one, 2001 -6 speed and now a 2007 6.7 litre manual. Wish I had kept the 01 with the manual trans.

Will do, thanks

Have ya checked the fuel filter? Stupid question I know. :sry: Friend had that issue.

I've got a 2001 dodge and I've already been down that road. I lost my lift pump first and thought I got lucky but within a couple months I lost my injector pump. There is a ton of information online about that generation of dodge. I watched videos on you tube and did the work myself, they both were fairly simple to replace. I know 5 or 6 people with 98-2002 dodges that have had the same problem, it's not if it will happen but when will it happen. I would bet it's your injector pump since you've already replaced the lift pump.

The injection pump has been replaced once already as has the lift pump. I have watched the videos on how to do the injection pump and it is do-able even at my skil level. But switching back to the original location of the lift pump is my first issue I need help solving, if it is possible with leaving the failed pump in the tank. I have acces to the dealer repair manual and the inj. pump video is pretty well done. But, if I could get someone up here to do a new inline lift pump then I will know if the inj. pump is toast.

Have you checked your pcu and ecu? codes

You can diagnose the problem without throwing parts at it. The in-tank lift pump is the way to go. Stick with that, they got rid of that other setup for a reason.

Have you checked your pcu and ecu? codes
Start with the key on/off procedure to get your error code and go from there.
Do you have a fuel pressure guage?
-
Please don't mess with diesel fuel pressure unless you know what you're doing. 15-20k psi will do a lot of damage and could hurt you.
A faulty lift pump will not set codes.

Sorry, I meant a fuel pressure guage mounted in the cab.
Would an faulty injection pump set a code?
-
Yes there is an internal injection pump fault code.
Let me see if I can find it.
-
P1688 is the internal injection pump failure code. There are others but if you've got that one, its kind of a no brainer.
-
p0216 is another one you don't want to see.

The dreaded VP death code. :(

i've dealt with many pump issues on the road to 700hp with my 2002, from starving the pump causing it to cease to having too much backpressure from the the OEM cross tubes causing it to cease. the best sure fire way to see if it's your pump or your lift pump is to loosen the return line off your VP pump. crank the truck over and if nothing comes out then chances are it's your lift pump. to tell for sure remove the banjo bolt going into your VP pump...you should only have to turn the key to the ACC position since this is the time the lift pump primes the injection pump. so if diesel does or doesn't come out of that line...well you should have your answer right there.
if you do get diesel out of your inlet and return line then i'd guess you vapor locked your injection pump. very common problem, just take a 3/4" wrench and crack loose a few fuel lines going to your head and bleed them out. but easiest way to check for any fuel is the inlet and outlet banjo bolts on the side of your injection pump. very easy to access, very easy problem to diagnose. check these yourself before you start spending any money on a mechanic/parts.

Im with jackelope, leave that in the tank but i sent you a pm i am free thru the week some or weekends let me know we can get it straightened out

Thanks guys for the comments and suggestions. Saltwaterhillbilly is going to look at it tomorrow for me. I got a code reader from a friend and it did throw the P0216 code of semi, possibly slow, death...Dang it :bash:
Maybe I will be the lucky guy and it is just the lift pump but Murphy's Law usually don't treat me well.

Uggh, I hope it turns out to be something other than what the code says.
Make sure you try what Quicksilver suggested above. That was spot on!! He should know, after all, his truck did like eating VP's. Finicky Mikes pumps. :chuckle:
If the code and testing is true, there not the cheapest around, but they do stand behind their product!! You might be able to find one for about $200 less though.....
