Title: Phelps Turkey Calls
Post by: JPhelps on February 11, 2013, 05:28:18 PM
I'm excited that the turkey calls will be ready in about a week (I'm waiting on some stickers for the pot calls).

I have 6 mouth calls that will be sold as a package.  $23.99.  Yelp has had a chance to play with them (I will see if he wants to give his opinion).

Also I will have ten each of glass/slate and glass/glass in a walnut pot with a wenge striker.  $35.99.

Let me know if you are interested.  I don't know how many more I will make this year.

Jason sent me several mouth call proto-types a few months ago.  I reported back to him with my opinion about them so that he could narrow down the calls he would design.  I tried all of them and most of them sound very clear and realistic.  I have used lots of mouth calls over the years for turkey hunting and these in form are similar but the latex Jason used seems better than the factory made calls.  The mouth call package Jason put together will be great for any Turkey Hunters turkey vest. It will cover sounds in the range of the young sweet hen to the ol'nasty hen and in between.  One purchase and your set, that is what I like about it.  Instead of buying one here and one there. I go through a minimum of 10 calls a year.  I'll see if Jason has any pics of the reeds in the package.  I know I am anxious to try a few of these he made up.  Can't wait.   :)

Here is the decal that goes under the glass.  They are on a transparent sticker and the initial batch turned out dark so I had to order some thin white vinyl stickers (die cut) to go over them.   As you can see from the bottom picture they turned out dark , but they sure do sing with the wenge striker.

Insert foot into mouth. :bash:

After getting home from RMEF elk camp my stickers and mouth call tape hadn't arrived still.  After spending some time with the company we were able to track them down.   They are still THERE!  I was told due to the snow they couldn't get them out.  I now have a tracking number and they will be here Tuesday.

So minus any other unforeseen issues all the turkey call orders will ship next Thursday.

Besides the 6 pack of diaphragms I have decided to start selling custom turkey calls for $6.49/call.  I can make any doubles, triples, or quads as clean or nasty as you would like.

I've got 7 glass over glass and 8 glass over slate remaining.  They turned out good.

I have calls ready to be shipped.  Nowhere else are you going to get 6 turkey calls for $23.99.

The Glass over Slate seems to have been popular and is disappearing quick.

I went and picked up a few calls from Jason the other night and they all sound great. I've been practicing on them the past few days and have the fiance' driven half crazy  :chuckle: but ya can't beat these calls, and for the price of the 6 pack, you aren't gonna find a better deal.

Not sure how to use them, but Im interested in picking up one of the friction calls to learn on and use. Id rather support one of the hw fellas then any store out there.. let me know which would work better for a novice man.

Both of the pot calls will be easy to run.  Glass/glass will is slightly higher pitched while the glass/slate will be a little more toned down.

Got the calls!!!! For the last few hours I have been running around with them and calling. Got a few weird looks at the grocery store and a good laugh out of the guys at the tire store. Then it turned to yelling when a truck caught on fire in the parking lot :chuckle: About swallowed one of the calls yelling for someone to grab me a fire extinguisher  :chuckle:

OK back to the calls. Once again Jason I think you have made some great call. By no means will I ever call myself a great turkey caller. I know you love honest feedback and felt I would give my 2 cents on what calls I like and what calls I don't care for. Granted everyone can sound a little different with calls so each person can be different on there views.

Love the standard double and the charcoal triple! Amazing sounds and these 2 will be my go to calls this year. I like the charcoal even a little better then the standard double.

I like the red and green and the red a little better of the 2 triples. I am just not getting the tones I love to hear but they still sound very well. They will still go with me but will be more for playing around or switching up sounds on a bird that I have talked to before or just to try something new.

I do not care for the v cut clear triple and the purple double. The purple is my least favorite. I don't care for the sound I am getting and having a hard time keeping a good tone in the sequence that I am doing. The v cut clear I am not able to hit the sharpness at the end of my notes. Once again just me and the way I am working them.

I look forward to seeing how the latex holds up and will see what the birds think very soon!!!!

Matt, Awesome Review

I have already started making some changes to the "Sassy V" as it is a LOT of Latex to move.

The dislike of Casper (2.5 ghost cut aka "Dragon Slayer" elk call) does have me surprised because the stretch is very close to that of the Bat wing and straight double.  Do me a favor and pull on the two purple points in the cut.  Just hard enough to get it to separate the layers.  I'm curious if this will help.
Title: Re: Phelps Turkey Calls
Post by: carpsniperg2 on April 01, 2013, 06:54:05 PM
That did help it a lot Jason. Is the purple a different type of thickness of latex. I brake it free and it sounds good but after a few calls it really seems to be clinging to the layer under it.
Title: Re: Phelps Turkey Calls
Post by: JPhelps on April 01, 2013, 06:58:26 PM
Yeah it a .004 purple over two layers of prophylactic.  Mine only sticks after I let it dry but it usually breaks free after a couple series of yelps.  If you want you can put some cooking oil on your finger a get it between those layers and it should help them from sticking that bad OR if it keeps hanging up let me know.
Title: Re: Phelps Turkey Calls
Post by: carpsniperg2 on April 01, 2013, 07:01:07 PM
I will give that a shot. I will play with it a little more over the next day or to. Maybe if I break it in a little more and get that oil in there it will stay free. Thanks

Got to see and llisten to your calls while visiting Yelp April 18th a.m.    Sweet calls Jason.  I will be ordering some soon, and dumping some of the mass produced calls.   Cut my teeth bow hunting deer & elk near Lebam/Francis in the 60's & 70's.  Have also chased some toms in the area.  Great place to live and hunt.
