Title: Saylean saves Issaquah from a monster!
Post by: saylean on September 24, 2008, 09:17:29 PM
Hey all,

Story goes:

I headed out to one of my brothers secret spots...a place where I have called in two bears earlier this season.

Get there bout 3...walk my usual path...found a surprising small amount of sign..and plenty of berries still in tack...so I was kind of disappointed.

I decided to head up to where I call from and get bout half way up the hill. Light rain, wind and bout 6 pm.

Round a corner and looking down for sign..put my head up...just to my right, here is a bear looking right at me at about 30 yards or less in the brush on hind legs. Just to the left of this stump (see pic).

First I freeze then scan for cubs...she is chattering her teeth and huffing at me...

False charge number 1! Her she comes! :yike:

Stands back up...still no cubs...(this takes place over about 30 seconds). More teeth chatter and huffing...

Now her she comes full on!

I pull up and pop her at about 20 yards or so...hit her right in the chest. She piles up. Nice big white patch on the chest. I call my bro and let him know...gutted her and packed her out whole.

Not the biggest bear, to be 100% honest, I shot more in self defense (spur of the moment) than wanting to kill it.

I had about a mile or so pack out. It couldnt have weighed too much cause I was able to lift it up over my shoulders, with my pack and gun and carry it for a bit.

Either way..one tag filled...exciting evening and good eats coming my way. Enjoy!

No implied criticism - I'd have done exactly the same.  Judging from the condition of the teats in the second picture, I'm guessing she was lactating?  Beautiful bear, definitely a fully mature, adult female, even if she wasn't too big.  Nice job.

Nice bear!! Sounds like an awesome little evening hunt. Does your wife or GF have a breast pump you could use to try to get at some of that whole milk? :chuckle: Or you can always do it the traditional way to check for milk :bdid: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Looks familiar, not the spot I was in last week, but not far from where you live either.

My luck with bears just sucks lately.  That is for sure. It is really beginning to get old.

Yeah!  Been a month since I have even seen a bear, and that one I could not get a good shot on, so let it walk.  For my first year back to hunting bear after taking several years off, it sure sucks.  I was nailing one every year for a while there.  Then fishing got in the way and I have not tried to go after bear for about 6 years or more until now.

Think I am going to go roll in some bacon grease and see what happens!

Just as an fyi...she weighed 100lbs even, after being gutted. Took her down to the butchers today...getting roasts...burger, summer sausage...

having her half mounted....due to the white patch...that and I already have 2 rugs...

That must have been a rush. One time while I was scouting an area and walking through some timber I saw a sow run her cub up a tree and the sow also went up the tree several feet. She then huffed and popped her teeth at me. I got the idea and backed out of there. They sure know how to get ones attention. Brian.

Man you aint kidding...I have been running the situation over and over in my head...I keep hoping it wasnt a sow with a cub somewhere I didnt see...but no milk and no cub heard or seen (up trees, in brush, after the kill, before hand, etc)....hopefully everything was ok in that respect...I would have a hard time living with hitting a sow with a cub...

99% it was all good...just a startled bear to my guessimate.
