Title: So I'm Taking my Bro-in-Law......
Post by: Big Bucks Tim on September 25, 2008, 08:53:54 AM
Well, my brother in law has been hounding me to take him out hunting this year for black tail.  He took the on line hunter safety course but waited to long to find a range day and has to wait till next year to actually hunt.  But being the great brother in law that I am I am willing to take him to show him a little bit of the ropes.  He is big into the whole Civil War reenacting thing and already thinks he knows everything there is to know about hunting.  So I've decided to take him on some long hikes and a lot of spotting.  He believes that the deer will just come to you.  He has no clue.  He watches these hunting shows on TV and sees that they get deer every time, not realizing all the work that goes in to finding a good buck. Sorry had to vent a little.  Any more tips to show him what goes in to a good hunt are welcomed.

If you are sucessful, be sure he gets his hands a little dirty during the gutting.  :P

In fact, I would make sure he is aware that you do not become a real hunter into you swallow the testes whole....and be totally serious and get really pissed at him if he balks.  My grandpa did that with me.  Of course, I threw my knife down and walked off lol.

keep him happy, remember you have to live with his sister. However if ya do knock one down, drop your drawers and walk up behind the deer with your hat sideways and ask if he wants to go first.

I don't know if I would go quite that far but funny idea!! :lol4:

When I shot my first deer I was 13 and my dad grabbed a coffee cup and told me to drink it's blood.  Well, I did and then he told me he was kidding.

This year in WA. state there is a one time waiver of hunters Edd. You can sponsor him using your wild I.D.#. My friend did this this year and went with us on the high hunt. Gets you your tag and all.  :twocents:

I will be right back as I go get the Windex and paper towels to wash the mountain dew off the monitor.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I actually did that for a friend of the family last year as well.  It is a one time only thing....but if he's already passed the online portion and you feel like he would be responsible enough in the outdoors with a firearm then that could be a possibility for you guys.  I would remind him that it is not the "civil war" anymore though.... ;)

My God!!!  I am wondering what other rights of passage there might be??   :P  Good topic of another post!!
When our hunting group have "broke in" a newbie we told them that they had to take a big ole bite out of the heart and during the gutting process they also had to surrender their knife to get it broke in.

I have never heard of this.  How do you go about getting it?  Also does getting him this exempt him from the range test?

You can request a one year deferral if you like--but it's a one-tim-only deal.

IIRC, it's $20 and fill out a paper. The person filing the deferral must hunt with an experienced hunter (it's like a learners permit for driving a car).

Info is in the regs, or on the WDFW website.
Thinking about doing it for my girlfriend for the late hunt.  :dunno:

Civil war fellow? Have him drag a cannon down the trail with you and then send him ahead twelve miles occasionally to scout! Then maybe starve in squallor at camp for three months in the winter, and then cut his leg off at the knee with a dull knife and a bottle of scotch.  :dunno:  That's sort of like deer season...
