Title: Trailer
Post by: Sawbuck on February 15, 2013, 06:52:50 AM
I've got a 3h bumper pull and am looking at upgrading to a gooseneck that I can haul at least four with. Last hunting season making multiple trips so some of my horses could ride in my dads trailer was the final straw. My dad has a featherlite stock combo that is real nice, but way out of my price range. What do some of you horse guys use? Any brands/trailers to stay away from? I don't need all the fancy crap, just something that can get my ponies and gear down the road without problems.

I had a Trails West that I really liked.  It was heavy, but pulled very well.

If you're looking for economy, find a 4 horse BP stock trailer.  I used one of those for years too.

Loved my Trails West, I had the one with the insulated dressing room with a mid tack and it was awesome as a camper, very comfortable.  Heck I even took it camping when I didn't take the mules, I'd load the boat in the back or the atv and have a great camper and gear hauler as well.

I had the same setup.  You can put a wood stove in the horse compartment, open the stud door and have it nice and warm throughout the trailer.  I made a stove jack out of diamond plate to replace the plexiglass slide in window panels.

Thanks guys, camping out of a horse trailer is nice, especially with kids. I'm looking at a trails west or a maverick. The aluminum trailers are pretty high priced so I'm leaning torwards a steel one. I have a covered area to park it so weather won't be as much of an issue with rusting. Anybody ever own a maverick?

Sawbuck - As recent as last weekend, Laurel Feed had a 4h GN Silverlite parked out front with a for sale sign it.
I did not pay any attention what it said for price, etc.  Might be worth swinging in and taking a look if your headed down the Guide towards B-ham this weekend.

Another vote for Trails West.  Excellent trailers. I currently have a 3 horse bumper pull, but I'm looking to upgrade to a gooseneck as well.

I have a Logan Coachman 4 horse/stock combo GN.  If I'm not packing in, this is how I set it up-  I sewed a tarp to fit over the top with a cut out so I can use the side door and put a stove jack in it to pipe out the top of the back door.  Inside, I roll a cheap carpet out on the floor that is cut out for the stove and of course I shovel ground in over the boards before the stove is set, I put a small latch on the inside of the side door so I can open and close it from the inside, and S hooks on the top to hang lanterns from.  There is plenty of room for 2 cots and gear.  But if the wind is howling it is a noisy bugger and it always helps if you can tie your critters up somewhere else.  If I have the tack room part opened up and the partitions removed it hauls six really nice.  One of these days I do hope to upgrade to an aluminum one though. :)

Sold my trailer, well I'm trading it in, the dealer gave me top dollar for it and I only have to pay sales tax on the difference.  Heading over to Walla Walla tonight (hopefully between storms) to pick up the new one. Horsepower, that sounds like a pretty sweet setup. I'm hoping to sleep in the gooseneck overhang when I'm at the trailhead. We do quite a bit of driving over on Friday night, sleep at the trailhead, and get up early to head up the trail. Thanks for the input guys the trails west line was real nice, but I ended up going with the Snake River Maverick. It seemed to be a little more heavy duty, had the 7000# axles and I ended up getting a better deal on it than the trails west by about $2000. Hopefully it works out.

Anybody that is looking for a trailer, I can't say enough good things about the guys over at Don Johnson Trailers . Had to drive kitty corner across the whole state to get there, but it was worth it. Easy to work with, gave me good money for my trade, and made the whole process pretty dang easy got me in and out of there fast. Would have been a lot faster if we weren't bs'n about elk hunting :chuckle:.

Here is one from one from one of our many, many, many bathroom stops. Traveling with the whole family is slow. The other pic is just leaving the dealer, we made it about two hundred feet and the girls had to go the bathroom already.

Standard axle and springs set up or the god awful torque flex axles? If it's got Torque flex do not ever short the turn over the curb ,it point loads all the trailer weight onto one spindle bends it and then tire wear becomes funky.I used to build aluminum horse trailers and after replacing several axles my boss quit using them.Air ride suspension was our typical set up.

Nice. We're looking for a 4 horse GN right now. We traded our HEAVY 3 GN with the in-laws for a nice Circle J 2 bumper. More or less we were doing each other a favor as we'd get more out of the 2 horse when trying to get into a new one. And our 3 was a warmblood trailer so it worked better for them hauling their studs around.

If anyone knows someone looking to downsize let me know. Or looking to buy a 2 horse.

I'd recommend a Charmac.  I bought a late model and did a little work to it.  Tough trailer.  Heavy duty. Plenty of pulling my critters on steep, not maintained USFS roads.

:yeah: Second on that Charmac. We bought a 3H BP Charmac new in '02 and it's been a great hauler. Been on a lot of rough roads and still going strong. They are steel frame with aluminum skin so they are a bit lighter than an all steel rig. Wife wants a 2H gooseneck Lakota with living qtr so we're trading it in. Looks like there is still a good demand for the 3H BP configuration.
