Title: Rattle Snake round-up
Post by: danderson on February 18, 2013, 07:41:39 AM
There was some discussion last year on having a rattle snake round up, I have a few places in mind that could incorporate trout fishing out of the same camp, anyone else up for the challenge.

I've caught a few but just let them go. Definitely a novice but it could be fun. I ate some down in Texas and New Mexico. Just cooked over a campfire but they were good. A little bit of a kitchen touch and some spices could have made them alot better.

Are you rounding em up alive or dead?  Caught quite a few live ones when I was young and dumb, but now I mostly just shoot em, skin em and eat em.

This event, if you want to call it that is in the planning stage, last year we had quite a few folks that said they would be interested in a get together / rattle snake round up, alive or dead don't mater  but I'm eating the ones  I get, I just wanted to get the ball rolling and see what kind of response we get, I have a place in mind that opens to fishing for trout think its March 1st, and in past years during the day when fishing slows down you can take off from camp and get a few rattlers, or if anyone has another place in mind, let me know, or we could wait until later in the summer when the weather warms up.

I think I know the same area as I always run into big snakes when I hike in to fly fish

I think better to wait until May when most snakes are out.

I am in.

Keep the ideas coming, the place I'm thinking about is northeast of there, we have time to narrow down the area we also need a place to put up a camp.

The place I'm thinking about is Burke Lake, fishing is good and there's plenty of country to look for snakes, with  lots of places to camp along the lake

I think the season opens up March 1st for fishing there, might be a little cold since winters making a come back, we could wait until the weather warms up a bit, mid month sometime, the Naches place sounds good also, we could do a  shed/ rattle snake round-up

Watch the vermin, I had some friends that did this at their ranch in the foothill between Red Bluff and Mt Lassen.   Area became infested with mice after the second year.  Nothing to eat the little critters, if you have a cabin near by be aware.  They are yummy but also have a place in nature and don't travel very far.

That sounds like fun  except one minor detail. The rattlers, and I have an agreement, when they are out doing their snake thing, I will stay over on the west side.

Killed one while fly fishing at Lenice Lake two years ago.  It was pretty small.  We ate it; basically nibbling dry meat off the ribs.  Tasted like overcooked chicken.  What is the preferred method of preparation for rattlers?

killed 15 last year while fly fishing. I carry a 22 pistol with me as I always run into them while fly fishing the naches river. Oak Creek itself gets pretty bad with them too when I fish that.

WHAT  ???   :yike: :yike: :yike:   I have been hunting the area for 20+ years and have NEVER seen any type of snake.....  I HATE SNAKES!!!   :yike:

Reading this thread just made me nervous to get back out in the woods  :yike: :'(
