Title: WA SPRING BEAR PERMITS
Post by: trophyelk6x6 on February 18, 2013, 05:47:27 PM
Ok, it's time to put in. I have 5 pts and did not draw Huckleberry last year. I am thinking of Huck, sherman, or 49 degrees. Not sure which one this year. This winter is kinda screwing up my thought process unless some serious snow starts falling.

I shot one in the huckleberry unit a couple years ago.  Lots of land to hunt, but the snow was an issue.  I couldn't get most places until the last half of the season.

I drew last year, so I am back down to 1 point.  I put my kid and myself in this year.  It took me 5 years to draw my tag last time.

The Huckleberry wasn't easy, but there are plenty of bears there.  If you want an easier hunt head to the blues.

I hope I get drawn this year.  I went in this year with 2 points.  I know the odds are not in my favor.  I can't wait for the draw results.

Where do you find out about the deadline and buy points. I've never done any tag buying this early in the year for anything. The big game regs aren't out and that's the only way I've ever learned about seasons and what tags are available...

They are in last years regs. You can find it in last years paper copy or online.

The 2013 regs are posted online @ the WDFW website...to include all the corrections so far. Download the regs as a PDF file or just open them up. Purchase the "lottery tickets" online or @ an authorized store & then rub the magic 8-ball  :chuckle:

Pardon my oversight, I just double checked & they are still the 2012 regs  :sry:

Although the spring bear permit can be found @ http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits (http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits)

I'm not trying to be funny.  I think the blues gives people a better opportunity to see bears.

nothing easy about the blues steep lots of snow makes it hard to get to any public ground. i hunted in the blues 3 weeks last year and did not see 1 bear just bad luck on my part. never hunted ne for bears so cant compare.

Post by: bchance38 on February 26, 2013, 03:33:22 PM
I think there has been some confusion.  Bear hunting isn't easy!  Especially in the spring when you are dealing with snow.  We just need some early warm weather to open up some of these roads.

:yeah:  there is hardly any snow down there as of now compared to NE WA not to include the vast amount of terrain you can glass versus NE WA

Got drawn last year with 2 points, hoping for 2 in a row!
But doubt that will happen.  I really hope I know someone that gets drawn for the NE or Blues.  I'm wanting to get out bad and chasing bears was one of the most fun hunts I have done in a very long time.
Also wouldnt mind going on the west side if someone gets drawn they want/need help packing or an extra set of eyes glassing.

I know if I get drawn, i''ll definitely need help.  also...  just a question.  would it be too hard to hunt having a 3 year old kid with me?  my kid id excited to go if I get drawn, I just don't know if having him along would be a good idea.
Title: Re: WA SPRING BEAR PERMITS
Post by: h20hunter on February 28, 2013, 10:28:55 AM
I'd say take him....especially early on when from past threads you are doing more scouting than hunting....don't most bear hit the ground closer to the end of the spring season?

Definitely take him.  I took my son along on several hunts when he was quite young.  Now he is just young and we are putting in for bear tags together this year.  Start building memories.

From 2011 harvest stats.

Well, the stats are that of the 209 permits issued in eastern Washington, only 113 hunters actually hunted bear. That is 54 percent.
In western Washington, the stats are similar. 370 permits and 189 hunters for a 51 percent participation rate.
Too bad we can not survey the bear permit winners on this forum and see how many actually hunted.

Adding some examples: gmu 101 <50%, 154 <50%, 117 37%, 121 74%
