He is reluctant because it isn't clipped and you aren't suppose to take wild ones out of the water even for photos.

It isn't just wild, but anything that will be released.
Though, plenty of bios pull them out of the water for pictures and then leave them out on tables while tagging and measuring and probing with needles.

Tell your bud nice fish!

Some things probably should reluctantly not be posted on the www for all the world to see. Good law or bad law, if its a WA fish, it's probably a broken law. Call it what you want.

You can keep wild steelhead on some of the rivers.  There are reservation rivers in WA where it is legal to keep wild fish and photograph them out of water even if they are to be released.  There are state rivers where you can keep the wild fish and you can photograph them out of water if you don't release them.

It is legal to not only take a native fish out of water, but to tag one native fish a year on selected rivers after Feb 15.
Page 17 of the WDFW 2012-2013 reg book:
"WILD STEELHEAD RETENTION RULES: one wild STEELHEAD per license year may be retained
from one of the following rivers: Bogachiel River, Calawah River, Clearwater River, Dickey River, Hoh
River, Quillayute River, Quinault River, or Sol Duc River, as listed in the special rules."

With that said, Fish of a lifetime for sure!  :IBCOOL: If I landed that hawg, I would tag it (if legal to do so). Not one for tagging nates, but I would make an exception for a fish like that!

...and this is why fish like this are fish of a lifetime now. Once the fish is dead, its dead, and so is its gene pool. Hard to make babies when you're dead. Do the rest of the fishing community a favor and take measurements, take good pictures, get a replica made. Let someone else catch their fish of a lifetime.

Agreed.  And people wonder why our fish our smaller than they were historically.

Just wondering, how many people saying let that fish go if he's dead he is no longer in the gene pool try to go kill the biggest buck or bull every year and take it out of the gene pool?  Next time take a picture if that buck instead of shooting him, but make sure not to lift him off the ground for the pic!  Btw nice fish and pic

This is soooo true. In WA there are a few streams left were you can kill. But not because these rivers are making escapment. In fact NONE of the rivers open to kill have ever made escapement in the last few years.
You can kill on these rivers thanks to the Forks city council and a handful of local guides. Just cause its legal, dosent make it right....

The only difference is that deer and elk are not literally going extinct while we watch. Steelhead are.

I agree - freaking out about a picture is probably a bit of an overkill. But killing a fish like that, with the species disappearing, would be a bad move.

Another major difference is a fish that size not only has good genes but more importantly has been allowed to mature. If our deer and elk were allowed to mature to their prime we would see a whole lot more monsters running around, even a 3 point making it to that 7-8 year old range would be a monster. :twocents:

Let me add some gas to this Bonfire...

I see pictures of people like NW Wild Country, Steelhead nation, Young Hot Women fisherwoman steelheaders, etc... You get the point and they have 95% of the fish out of the water.  YOU know darn well it was a photo opt with that fish so they can sell more goods and products.

So why aren't you call jumping on them?  If it was a Washington Fish I would hope he would have taken a quick picture and get it back in ASAP.  And if it was an OP river the state allows on native kill on a few rivers.  YIKES!!!

I honestly have NO problem taking a fish out of the water briefly for a picture. Even though you can take excellent photos of the fish while it still remains partially in the water. I'll add some for reference if anyone wants, they won't have April Vokey in them though  :sry:

I think as long as the fish is properly supported (guy doesn't have a finger in the gills, or a hand halfway up the stomach causing the fish to bend in half) and is lifted from the water, snap photo, back in the water, there are no problems. I also make sure that the fish has had time to relax after landing it. Its amazing what 45 seconds in a net with their head in the current will do for a fish that just battled for 5 minutes. Let him recoup, take your photo, let him swim.

The law wasn't put in place because lifting the fish from the water kills them, we all know that. Those fish are way tougher than we give them credit for. It was put in place to at least minimize the abuse from people that have absolutely no clue how to handle a fish.

this is a big part of why i'm not so enthusiastic about steelhead fishing any more.  it's become a huge dick waving contest, seems like everyone's just out for glory instead of trying to enjoy themselves on the river.  guess you can say that about a lot of outdoor pursuits these days.

i've got lots of pictures, some in the water, some out of the water...you don't see me posting the ones of fish i may or may not have held out of the water.
