Title: Cover Scents
Post by: huntingbg on September 27, 2008, 06:21:51 PM
Anybody use cover scents and store their clothing a scent free bag?  Im thinking about buying some and any suggestions would be great.  Do they actually help or is it hype?  I'm going to be hunting western washington.

cant remeber the brand right now but I use one that has active silver in it and had the wind blowing toward an elk at 5yd and it never spoked.

I think what you were using was a scent eliminator and I heard that stuff is good.  I was wondering about storing clothes in a cover scent?  Thanks for the input.

I don't think any of that is needed.
I know guys that smoke two packs a day that are always in elk and kill elk every year. BTW they hunt archery. Play the wind right and you will be fine.

wash your clothes in unscented soap every time just before you go out.  Shower using unscented soap. Make sure your towel is unscented,  Use unscented deoderant, and the topper, take chlorophyll
tablets daily, starting in late August.  Trust me, it makes a huge difference.  You should still watch the wind, but if something does come by down wind, you have a much better chance of not being detected.

I agree that scent is not as much of a factor with elk but (in my experience) whitetails on public land are completely different.  I am pretty anal when it comes to being scent free for deer (archery).  I don't use cover scents of any kind, wash all my clothes, myself, my bedding, towels, truck seats and equipment in scent eliminating stuff, store all of my gear in a vacuum sealed bag with a few crushed fir needles in it, don't change into my hunting clothes until I reach my hiking spot (never drive or fuel up in my hunting clothes) and spray the hell out of every thing.  It has worked very well for me especially on whities that have been hunted really hard for a couple of months.  There is nothing like having a buck walk within 10 feet of you and have no idea that you are there.

I do wash my clothes in hunters soap and use store bought scents very little! The best luck
i have had is an old Indian cover scent called Yaro. Its a plant found all over in the mountains of the NW and when I'm hiking in I juts break off the plant rub it vigorously between my hands as if I were lathering a bar of soap and then just rub it into my clothes! It has a sweet smell to it when you do this and it is as natural of a scent as you can get and something the animals are used to smelling! Not to mention the price is right!  ;)
