Title: question about my gopro2. Help!!
Post by: trophyhunt on February 27, 2013, 05:22:44 PM
I have the go pro2 and have not used it yet, I've read the manual ( I know as I guy your not supposed to but what can I say??) and I'm confused on which video resolution mode to set it on????? Most of the modes talk about slow motion but I'm going snowmobiling for a week and I don't have a clue which setting would be better. Please anyone out there know which one is best for videoing fast hill climbs and such? Tips? Thanks

Your best bet would be 720 - 60fps If you want real good quality during motion.
If your just hanging out around camp doing random stuff, Id switch it to 1080 - 30fps. With that being said though, you have the option "only in 1080 mode" to switch from wide angel, medium angle, and narrow angel. Which the lower the angle you go the closer your images will appear. Good for semi close up shots. It leaves your picture pretty squared.
The slow motion stuff isnt really that Big of a deal unless your really doing extreme actions sports and want to slow down stuff, Which still... In that case 720 would be your best bet. 960 Always leaves you with black bars on either sides and it makes it harder for video editing.

Where you mounting it? Unfortunately hill climbs, drops etc don't always turn out that good. Depending on the conditions it can be really hard to judge depth/angles with the go pro. In addition to the helmet mount that comes with it, get a handle bar mount ($20) as they can be mounted on various places on your sled. Handlebars, front bumper looking forward or back up at you, rear bumper looking at you (great for criticing your skills later) etc.  Last Saturday with the couple feet of fresh I had some good video with it on my handlebar. Deep powder turns with it just duesching the camera on every turn.

Alrighty well heres one for starter.
This is Mitch's channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/micbergsma/videos?view=0 (http://www.youtube.com/user/micbergsma/videos?view=0)

Hes a great dude. Plan on meeting up with him when we go to Texas to check out Jacob's Well. Beautiful swimming hole.

He does tests, Comparisons, and shares random facts about virtually anything you can Imagine related to a Gopro cameras. Scroll through his video section and you will be amazed at what you can find. Enjoy.

P.S. I absolutely LOVE my gopro, and couldnt Imagine having any other camera for the price.
Ive seen numerous videos/tests where it was dropped 10k+ feet from skydiving/wingsuit flyers and It survives while still recording! Not even in the protective/waterproof case.

Thanks a lot for the info, now where can I get that handle bar mount?? It's good to hear the comments about the helmet location because that's exactly where I was going to put it. Can I get that mount at Fred Meyer? or do I have to go to sportsmans wherehouse in Federal Way? Thanks guys.

I dont recommend the helmet cam, Your head will always be moving around, That means the camera will to, You want it as stationary as possible for best footage like caseyd said.
A handlebar mount would work great. They have high end suction cup mounts also, and other attachments you can physically mount somewhere inconspicuous that has a small tether or string on it that connects to the suction cup incase it fails that way you dont lose your camera. If your going to pick up a GoPro, I also recommend putting your contact info on it in-case it gets lost, You would be surprised at how willing to return it some people might be. Also I painted my "non waterproof" cases that come with it just as a reminder not to stick them into the water. Alittle nail polish will save you from a few hundred doller disaster. Ill show you mine in a second, Ill post some photos.

But back to the mounts and accessories.
You can pick them up at Cabelas, Sportsmans Warehouse, Sports Authority usually has some in stock also.
You can always look online unless you need it asap.

WOW, that is epic!! My blood is pumping now, that camera looks sweet from the top of your helmet. It isn't as bumpy as I thought it would be, in fact I wonder if it would be more steady on your head than the handle bars?? Days like that in the snow riding are the best and don't happen very often. You have to try silent pass just north of radium some day, it's unbelievable. Thanks for the post, I am leaving work early now!! Question, have you tried the camera anywhere else besides your helmet??

Just like that Norse

Those little hip hits would be hard to tell if you didnt have the sled in front to watch him air out.

Trophy- Anywhere that sells GoPros should have the handlebar mount. I disagree with Smossy, the helmet mount works fine (as seen in this video) Mount it on the helmet butted up to the back of the visor. My favorite footage usually comes from a chase sled.

Thanks, now I just need the guys that I'm going with to buy a couple of them. I bet after they see the video they will have them next year! The more I think about it, it seems the head will act like a shock absorber better than the handle bars.

Where you one of the riders Norsepeak? Sweet video!

I have a lidcam that i wear on my helmet but i move my head around to much!!! I seen some other videos of people with gopros, attached to a pole or shovel on there backpack?  not to sure.  I was going to attach mine to the shovel handle strapped to the backpack next time i get to ride . It stays looking forward and catches all your movement really well.

that video just made me cry some more......broken sled

I think it depends on the person and activity, it definitely seems smoother on that video but when we use his it's always choppy from walking/looking around. Especially in the time-lapse picture mode. He got the chest harness and it works great. I think if you're just overly aware of your helmet cam/and know to constantly face forward as best as possible - it'd be good.

It's pretty common. I think you'd just have to train yourself to use it and keep your head steady forward.

Video looks great, you are right there. If your not doing lots of looking around then sure it will work... The places I go though your never just looking straight ahead. Your head is a swivel and going back and forth, That why I use my chest cam these days. I like to record whats Infront of me.

Thanks for your input smossy, I believe both applications will work fine. With walking I think your chest harness would would work just fine and I think with the snowmobile the helmet should work pretty good. That link you provided looks like it has great info, thanks again. I hope to post up some good vid of steep hill climbes!!

That vid was taken last Saturday, out side of Whistler B.C.  We were riding with Geoff Kyle.  I'm the one wearing the yellow/blue jacket.  Glad you guys liked the vid, I think it's a great vid too, but it just doesn't do the day or the conditions all the justice it deserves.  It was the most amazing day of riding I've ever had.  The snow conditions were perfect, and the weather was fantastic.  We burned 13+ gallons of gas each and litteraly coasted into the trailer completely exhausted at the end of the day.  EPIC!

yeah, that last area was awsome, and untracked...only problem was we were running out of gas and had to bail.....good problem to have though. :chuckle:  Love the XM, the best sled I've ridden.  Very nimble, great power and handles amazing in the woods.  Little spooky on the trails at speed, but that's not what it's designed for anyway.

Download cineform studio for gopro. It comes with editing software... not sure how it compairs to other software but its for gopro specificly and its freee. My computers a piece of crap so ive never done any editing myself, couldnt give you a walkthrough. Just use that software. Upload it to youtube, then post the direct url link right on to the page and it should auto imbed it :) hope that helps buddy

Check out the wasabi power spare batteries. Theyre rated 1400 mAh compaired to the gopros 1100 mAh and they hold a charge longer. You can pick up a two pack with wall/car charger on amazon for $20. Mine should show up tomorrow in the mail. If they do ill do some testing and let you know how it goes. Ive read nothing but good things about them though. Consider picking up a remote and wifi pack if you dont already have one. That way when you spot an animal and get ready you just use your remote to power/start recording without even touching your camera. They also have a nice attachment called the RAM that not many people know about these days. Its a complete 360 swivel ball attachment and allows you to spin the camera any direction with no adjustment. Cheers bro.

The gopro's battery do suck bad, I got 1 hour of use out of it before it went dead. I was just using it for video but I still would have thought it would have lasted longer. Please let me know how that other battery works, and that remote, will it work on the gopro2???? Also, another question, how do I get that beep to be quiet?? The last thing I need is for it to beep when I turn it on when an animal comes in. Thanks

Ill have to check with my guy about the remote for ya, should have an answer by later today.
For the sound AND the blinking record light, you just go into the settings "the little wrench looking thing" scroll through those settings untill you see "more" enter that subsections, then about 6 clicks over you will see what looks like a little sun labeled LED turn that off.. then click over one more time to the music note and also turn that off. Then click over once again and you will see a little circle thing with a line striked verticly through the top of it, set that to 60 or 120 secs. That way if your camera isnt being used or it turns on accidently in your bag/pocket it doesnt just sit there on standby all day untill its dead..

Also another quick little tip, if you get tired of scrolling through the menu settings looking for the exit. At any point you can just hold down the shutter button "the top one" for about 3 seconds and it will release you back to your chosen record mode. Saves alittle time when needing to get back to record quick.

The wifi pack holds its own charge, once thats burned up it will take out of your gopro but the wifi pack can and has sat on standby for 6-8 hours. everyone should have the app tho its free. Ive recorded nonstop for 2 hours in 30-40 degree temps so dunno, maybe your battery is faulty. Id look into replacements. Find one with a higher mAh rating like wasabi power or smartree. Holds more power. Plus you can get a charger through duracell that charges on any usb unit to hold power, then u can plug it into your gopro if your on the go like hiking or hunting for backup power. Will give you about 50% charge unless you buy the powerhouse which is alittle bulkier but will give you maybe 2x full charges without a source. They have battery opperated chargers also but i dont recommend them. Just costs more money to replace batteries. I have backups, then backups for my backups.

Cool bro let me know how it goes, Also if you ever plan on doing recordings where Audio is somewhat of importance..
I highly recommend the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone, Its about $18 and will make the audio quality from your camera 50x better (Its In stereo not mono so you'll still get sound from both speakers). Its a clip on style mic, crystal clear sound with less background noise, and its self powered with a 20-30 foot cord.

Cheers bro.
Update on this topic, the wasabi powers rated at 1400 mAh are extremely better than the stock gopro battery. The charge is about holds about an extra hour worth of record time and has absolutely no play while inside the camera. Ive read reviews of people having issues of the battery jiggeling around when moving and giving feedback from the internal mic. I have not had this issue and as far as right now the wasabis are my primary batteries. I only resort to my 3rd battery "the stock gopro 1100 battery" for extreme backup. They have worked great in my skeleton case even at temps below freezing.

Also the skeleton case is a great accessorie along with the usb car charger. It allows for unlimited recording time as far as power goes, your only limited by the size of your sd card. These accessories conjoined with a suction cup mount make for a great dash cam or something to just record your car trips.  Just mount, plug in your power source, maybe even your external mic, and start recording those memorable journeys in the vehicle with your family or friends.
