Will be getting an older 300 built in the 1950's when Weatherby made them using a Mauser 98 style action.
I'm very anxious try some handloads, do any of you hunters have advice to offer? I want to use 190 or 200gr slugs, hoping to get more range AND energy than my '06 Ackley.
The most accurate loads for it use 180gr and, if I recall, are a bit under 2800fps.
Of course I realize each gun /barell shoots a bit different, this old 300 looks to have a bright bore and should be able to out perform the '06A.I. - a plain jane 700ADL.

It should serve you well . make sure its not stock bound , those older wbys heat up quick .

My 300 Roy has been my go to for the last 5 years or so, it has been a great round on everything from antelope to elk

I have had several over the years, one of my favorite rounds. You shouldn't have any problem getting better ballistics than your AI. Accuracy may be a toss up or swing in favor of the AI though.
For cost savings shooting handloads are ok in the WBY's but you will be hard pressed to match the performance of their factory ammo.

The factory - Norma? seems well respected. I've read that it's loaded pretty hot, and their brass has near top volume available. Going to try some H1000, maybe H870, RL22.
Had a load for a 7mm Rem using H870 that worked really good. That rifle allowed seating the bullets just off the lands, I was thinking maybe that helped get that big load of slow powder working.
Wondering if this "57 300 has enough magazine length, and do these early models have the long freebore always mentioned about Weatherby rifles?
Cost savings is attractive as well, though I always hope to beat average factory loads accuracy, maybe not this time.
The barell is long and thin, , coachcw, are you saying "stockbound" to mean floating the barrel, or releiving around the tang, or,,,?
As with most new to me rifles, I've got hopes that this could be the perfect hunting weapon...
Just kidding.
It does make a nice step up from '06AI or 7Rem, those are both newer stuff.
I'm secretly hoping this older, perhaps made to order , in a kinda small but state of the art gunmaker's shop, rifle will grant special powers to the user.

I have one that I shoot a lot and have loaned it to many hunters. It's killed a lot of animals all the way out to 600+, crazy as it may sound, it shoots factory 180 gr Remington Corelocks better than any handloads I have tried, still trying to figure a hand load that will shoot as well as the Remington in this particular gun.

Make sure the barrell floats
