Title: Broken, Cracked, Damaged arrow shafts...What do you do with yours?
Post by: Smossy on March 04, 2013, 03:01:39 PM
Have a few arrow shafts of assorted lengths that have cracks along where the nock feeds in and or near where the broadhead seats...
Are there any known way to make repairs or get use out of these? Or do you guys just toss them into the trash? Being as Im working on limited funds id hate to just trash them but dont want carbon splitting off into my face  :dunno:

Chop them down then put them with my son's little compound. Or...chop them down and donate them to any archery program you can find.

Same as H2O. I cut them down with my saw, rebuild and used to give to my kids. Now that mine shoot normal length arrows, I give them away to other younger kids. I keep a bunch in my quiver for 3-d's and when i see a youngster who only has a few arrows I ask his parents if it would be OK to donate to his/her cause.

Thatx nice of you guys. I have a mini cobra 50lb crossbow. Should i just chop them down for that? And if so what length should i chop them down to... the length of the shaft receiver or maybe a few inches more? Also lol. What tools work best for cutting carbon.. i have a dremel.

I have heard of people using a dremel with the fiber cutoff wheel.  :twocents: I'm guessing that the cross bow is one of those that does not have cams like a compound bow? if so you could cut them down for that. IMO.

Yeah, there are no cams. Its a single string recurve mini crossbow.

Antenna decorator.

If you are a long draw archer, consider donating or selling at discount to short draw archers.  Like me, I shoot 25.5" - 26" length.

Ooh i like that idea. The worst one is cracked on both sides so its for sure trash. But the others are mostly hairline stress fractures where the nocks insert.

Smossy,
Here's my dremel based arrow cut-off saw.  Once your nocks start getting loose or when you can see a crack, then you've got enough cracks in the shaft to cut it down for kids or throw it out.  Arrows are cheap compared to trying to get carbon out of your hand.  Put a drill bit a couple sizes smaller than the inner diameter of the shaft and swing it like a fly swatter to knock the insert out to cut that end down.  Be careful: it will be like a bullet when it finally comes out.

Always flex and roll the arrows between your fingers listening for creaks or grinding noises.  If you hear anything, then just break that arrow over your knee right then.  There are no OK cracks in the middle of an arrow.

Cut them down into four inch lengths, deburr well, ultra sonic clean and then sell them to your cocaine addict friends. :chuckle:  About the only thing broken arrows are good for.  That or staking up your tomato starts.

Why go thru all that trouble. I would personally rather they snort up carbon glass slivers.

Yeah, but first of all most of them will probably be relatives of the angry squaw. :yike:  Second, the "Slip and Fall" lawyers don't care if their clients are drug users, drug dealers or complete drains on society.

We use the other option around here.  Peas, tomatoes, green beans...they all start with an old arrow for support.  I think the bright fletching gives them encouragement to reach the top ;)

I used to chase my Dad around the house smacking him with them...... Then he bought a wooden dowel and I wised up quick  ;). Now they just collect up and get in the way so I toss them.

I did the antenna decorator.  The first hunting trip out it snagged a branch and took my whole antenna off.... :chuckle:

Took my slightly bent aluminum XX75's, stripped the fletching off, took nocks off put 5" of shrink tubing over the insert/head end,  and three green castration bands just below that.  Makes nice, extremely light shooting sticks that are the perfect length for sitting down on a coyote/cat calling stand.

Also, if I lose a set or whatever, I don't mind.  I shoot carbons now anyway.  Have give away several sets as well.

i have a bad arrow habit.i bought a dozen or 2 o month this winter and i always throw em in a pile when i build a new arrow or i hit rocks or something.
after inspection i cant find cracks or anything on 90 percent of them.
i shoot a .250 spine so i dont see em working out well for anyone i shoot with.
i really need to find someone that can use em for sure.cuz they really take up alot of room

Swing by the craft store and get some stretch cordage. Then sing by the local archery range and pick up from other busted arrows from the trash. Hopefully, the ID of one will be about the same size as the OD of the other. Cut the larger diameter ones about 3-4" long and glue them on one end of the others and make them into ultralight tent poles or something. Make cheap blowguns for your kids. There are a million uses for a tube. Hell cap one end, drill a hole in the other and stick a bobby pin or the like through it and use them for speedloaders for tube fed .22's. The only limit is your imagination.

I use my old or damaged arrows for mixing paint. They fit in the dewalt drill and the veins mix the paint pretty good. After mixing they are wiped off and hung up to dry out and are ready for the next time.
