Title: Training my dog to find sheds!
Post by: BowForElk on March 05, 2013, 11:31:56 PM
Hey guys I want to teach my dog to find sheds but I don't have any sheds! I was wondering if anyone (hopefully remotely local to rochester!) wanted to sell a handful of deer sheds. I don't care what ones they can be broke or little, nothing special just need a few to teach the pup.

I don't really know what the going rate for antlers is but I'm sure we could work something out!

So who's got some extra scrap sheds? eh eh eh eh?

I have  a few cut up elk pieces....10-12" chunks. I may be able to spare one.  :dunno: Not sure how well that would work though.

I don't have enough sheds to share yet but let me know if you want to get together to hunt sheds (train).

Ill check ebay and see what they got, I figured I would give you all a shot. Also I saw those at PartSmart the only thing is they are unscented...so I dunno if its gonna work well if she can't make the scent distinction well. She's a 12 week old pure bread German Shepherd so she will figure it out lol.

Heres another question, if i buy a bunch of whitetail sheds how is that gonna work out if i need the dog to find blacktail sheds? As far as scent goes is she gonna be able to pick it up or not so much?

What about the scent on the antlers though? Im assuming that whitetail sheds have a different scent than a blacktail shed thus using whitetail sheds off ebay (if I can't get any off of you guys!!!!) she won't be on the right scent trail, looking for something that she isn't gonna find on this side of the state.  :dunno: :dunno:

I don't think it really matters what sheds you use to train them.  My dog was trained on blacktail sheds and found two elk sheds the first time I took her out looking for them.   :dunno:

Saweet! Ebay I go! I found like 10lbs of whitetail antlers for about 60 bucks which didn't seem horrible to me.  Should be enough for her to chew on and get used to then search around the property for!

Just make sure your dog understands when looking and retriving shed its not one to chew vs one as a treat if you plan to give bone as treat. Just in case it’s a good one, and they sell sent for antler training at Cabelas.
