cases and loads are different but ive been told that jacketed bullets are interchangeable between 45 colt and 45 auto, the .452 diameter bullets. dont quote me on this as im not 100% positive. ive only been told this havent verified its true

45 acp is .451, but .452 is ok with cast lead. Thats what I've read anyways and what I load in my 45acp. Many times they are shaped differently though. Also often times the box will be marked "45LC or 45 colt" etc.

:)In the old days the Army used two .45s for a while. a Shoenfield (spelling??)(double action top break revolver) and a Colt single action. The Shoenfield used a 45 caliber "russian" I think it was called, used a shorter cartridge, the single action Colts used the .45. When the guys at the forts ordered ammo they often wrote ",45 caliber ammo short" and ".45 caliber ammo 'Long" ( as both guns were issue)and many folks started calling the .45 Colt the "Long Colt"  or .45LC. Of course the .45 ACP has nothing to do with this!! The proper name is .45 Colt.
Bullet diameter and the name of the cartridge are not always the same.

45acp will run .451 jacketed or .452 lead.
I believe that 45 Long Colt is .452 nominal.
I could be wrong about that.
You also see heavier bullets in LC.

This a great example of undisiplined ignorance.
