Post by: Antlershed on August 07, 2007, 06:00:15 PM: I'm sitting around bored wishing it was deer season (or just the weekend so I could be out bear hunting), and I thought I would share my avatar buck with you. The buck was shot by my great-grandfather in 1946, and I believe it is currently in the top 10 for the state of Washington. It has something like 16 scoreable points on one side, and 15 on the other side, and scores 225 1/8. He also has a bullet hole through one of his antlers. The horns were not put into a cape until just a few years ago, but now he hangs on the wall of my dad's house, and he is pretty cool to look at.

The only reason I ask is I have killed one buck and one bull elk, that had holes in the horns much like your set does. I always assumed they were a previous hunters bullet hole, and that I got lucky and the other guy did not! I was hunting in northern Quebec and killed a nice bull caribou in velvet and when stripping the velvet from the horns, I found a parasite had burrowed a hole in the horn which looks just like a bullet hole once the velvet was off. It was some sort of worm and the larvae was present. The outfitter said they see it occasionally. Not sure if that applies to all horns with holes in them, but it made me think, are my other hole in the horns truly bullet holes :dunno:.......Truly not questioning your story, but does anyone else have a set of horns that looked like they been shot, yet they did not shoot the hole in the horn? All that being said, I wish I had a set of horns like that hanging on my wall!

It seems more likely since there is a notch taken out of the other tine like 509er said. I will be stopping by my dad's place tomorrow, so I will see if his scanner is working, and I will also try and scan the original picture with the other bucks they shot in the same trip.

Post by: Antlershed on August 12, 2007, 09:54:33 PM: The 3rd guy in from left to right is my great grandfather. I never got to meet him, so it is pretty cool to have the horns at my dad's house (hopefully someday I will get to have them in my house). I will have to ask my dad more about the buggy.

Thanks and I hope so. It just recently moved from my dad's house to my grandparents new house (it was my grandmother's father who shot it). Part of the story I left off is that the horns were varnished when it was shot back in '46 (I guess that was one taxi option back then), and I am the one who did the work of using some sort of paint thinner (I can't remember for sure now) and a TOOTHBRUSH to remove all of the varnish from the horns. Hopefully One day I will get to hang it in my house.

Isn't it from around the same time and area. Maybe this one is older. :dunno:
