I'm sitting around bored wishing it was deer season (or just the weekend so I could be out bear hunting), and I thought I would share my avatar buck with you. The buck was shot by my great-grandfather in 1946, and I believe it is currently in the top 10 for the state of Washington. It has something like 16 scoreable points on one side, and 15 on the other side, and scores 225 1/8. He also has a bullet hole through one of his antlers. The horns were not put into a cape until just a few years ago, but now he hangs on the wall of my dad's house, and he is pretty cool to look at.

Super nice buck! Do you know where he was taken?
-
If I remember correctly, it was near Leavenworth. My dad has the original newspaper article that was written about the hunt, so I will double check with him.
-
Quite the buck and I bet with a rich history.
-
holy crap. yeah...what miles said...thats him.
-
Great looking buck, don't see those too often in Washington.
-
Yep, he definately would do. Please post the story. That would be cool. Thanks for the pics.

Great looking buck. I do have one question. How do you know it's a bullet hole in his antler? The only reason I ask is I have killed one buck and one bull elk, that had holes in the horns much like your set does. I always assumed they were a previous hunters bullet hole, and that I got lucky and the other guy did not! I was hunting in northern Quebec and killed a nice bull caribou in velvet and when stripping the velvet from the horns, I found a parasite had burrowed a hole in the horn which looks just like a bullet hole once the velvet was off. It was some sort of worm and the larvae was present. The outfitter said they see it occasionally. Not sure if that applies to all horns with holes in them, but it made me think, are my other hole in the horns truly bullet holes :dunno:.......Truly not questioning your story, but does anyone else have a set of horns that looked like they been shot, yet they did not shoot the hole in the horn? All that being said, I wish I had a set of horns like that hanging on my wall!
-
No real proof that it is a bullet hole, just what we assumed. It seems more likely since there is a notch taken out of the other tine like 509er said. I will be stopping by my dad's place tomorrow, so I will see if his scanner is working, and I will also try and scan the original picture with the other bucks they shot in the same trip.
-
I am sitting at my dad's house trying to get his scanner to work. It started scanning it once and then froze. If I can't get it to work while I am here, I will have my dad try and scan it and then e-mail it to me.
-
Scratch that.....Got it to work. I thought the article was bigger than this, but it is all my dad has. Also, the picture of the other bucks they took on the same trip (I don't know why the picture scanned so weird.

Thanks for the article and that picture of the boys and the bucks is priceless. Thanks for getting it posted on here.
-
I agree. Nice vintage hunting article and photos.
-
Thanks Antlershed! Really enjoyed the article and the photo. A fine crew of hunters and a beautiful lifetime WA buck. Which fella's your Great-Granddad?
Would very much like to hear more about the "Go Buggy". Sounds a little like Huntwa's "Hoopty Truck".
-
what a buck!!
that old picture makes it even better.
-
The 3rd guy in from left to right is my great grandfather. I never got to meet him, so it is pretty cool to have the horns at my dad's house (hopefully someday I will get to have them in my house). I will have to ask my dad more about the buggy.
-
Great picture and story, thanks for sharing. As pointed out, due to the notch in the other antler, it certainly could be a bullet hole. I was just surprised by my find on my caribou and was wondering if it could be the same thing.
-
The holes usually look different. That looks like a bullet hole from what I would guess. I've got some examples of the bug variety around my home, I'll see if I can drum them up.
-
Great post. Love the newspaper story, pictures of now and by gone days. Great history! I have a great picture from the 30's of my Grandpa and his buck. Nobody knows what happened to his antlers though. I think we all appreciate these posts!
-
Awesome!

Um, it's funny tha the Go Buggy never took off...
My sister in law lives up chumstick and I've never seen anything like that up there. Makes me want to have another drink.

Thanks and I hope so. It just recently moved from my dad's house to my grandparents new house (it was my grandmother's father who shot it). Part of the story I left off is that the horns were varnished when it was shot back in '46 (I guess that was one taxi option back then), and I am the one who did the work of using some sort of paint thinner (I can't remember for sure now) and a TOOTHBRUSH to remove all of the varnish from the horns. Hopefully One day I will get to hang it in my house.
-
Protect it with your life!!! AWSOME
-
WOW WOW WOW POW :brew: :rockin: :tung: :yike:

That's pretty darn cool you have all the history to go with such a great deer..Awesome post.
-
Thanks for sharing a great part of your family history.
-
I noticed one of those old metal snap tags on it. I just recently got handed down to me from my dad a whitetail head that my grandad killed. It has one of those metal tags on it from 1939. Very cool.
-
Yep, the old metal tags are pretty cool. I'm glad it was left on the rack all those years.
-
that is a pig!
-
Truly priceless pic and story...We all should be so luck to have stories like this to share!!
-
Well I was bored the other night so I dug out the score sheet. If I read it correctly, there was 41 inches of mass on this thing. :yike:
-
thanks for posting the article and the picture pretty cool history
-
Very cool!!!

That buck looks similar to the one in that old picture that is floating around somewhere with three bucks in the back of the vehicle where the one is huge, one would be a nice buck for anybody and one is an average buck. Isn't it from around the same time and area. Maybe this one is older. :dunno:
-
it is a different buck than this one. All are nice bucks.
-
Yup thats the one, your right. I guess that one is more recent and all three bucks in that one are damn nice! Same area right?
-
That one was Cashmere I thought.
