Title: 3 years 2 dif gmu's same buck 30 miles apart.
Post by: antlerking on March 08, 2013, 10:04:43 AM: I found the big set this year along with the white one. I found the middle shed last year in the entiat gmu and the other two the swakane gmu, same buck without a doubt 30 miles apart. Crazy how the bucks pick a dif ridge to winter on year to year. He went from a 62" antler to a awsome 77" antler in 3 years. Cant wait to find him next year if I can!

What makes you so sure they are from the same buck? I just figure with all of the deer out there, some would be genetically very similar.... Kind of like some brothers are hard to tell apart. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Every deer has small differences. The bases tell me a lot about the deer. The button are almost always the same just bigger. The shape and curve or the antler stay the small each year as well they may add a point or add mass but the over all curve of the main beam stay very close to same. All those thing factor into knowing if its the same buck or not same goes for elk and moose. That just my :twocents:

Its not like DNA testing or anything like that, but generally speaking you can have a pretty darn good educated guess by comparing antler characteristics and or buck characteristics. It is just that though, an educated guess, just like me comparing bucks in photos. Sometimes I have a little more to work with. You gather enough bone though and you can have a pretty good guess. What will be really cool is when in 20 years he pulls a set that looks just like it in the same spot.

If you haven't seen these data they're really interesting. Tagged bucks travel up and down the exact same trails to the exact same winter range, very neat information.

However, fires, new home construction, predators, etc. can obviously affect these patterns.

Bone, you have a lot of experience seeing these bucks every fall. In your experience in Washington, how common is it to see the same buck (based on your best guess) in completely different country from one year to the next?

This post isn't meant to disagree that the sheds from the OP aren't from the same deer. Just curious if the studies I've seen hold true in WA?

Post by: boneaddict on March 12, 2013, 01:24:01 PM: I generally see them within feet of where they have been seen in previous years and tend to believe they migrate to the same tree, basin, etc. I have been absolutely amazed to that actually.

I like the similiarity of the sheds though, and would have guessed they were from the same buck if I had found them in the same proximity.

I am guessing wolves or something has pushed that buck elsewhere if I had to fathom a guess.
