Title: Blesbock cull hunt

No, it turns my stomach. I don’t know the reasons behind the slaughter but I’d hope there would be a better way to cull the herd.

More like harvesting beef for the markets here in the states. PLUS, $'s go back into managment of these animals. Rather then a butcher putting a ballpean hammer or a .22 between the eyes of a bovine or hog, $'s are generated in the killing and butchering for the local populace..

I’ve killed cattle with a hammer, it’s not pleasant. Shooting antelope from a helicopter seems about the same to me. Doing the same to wolves or hogs doesn't bother me, but for some reason I think the antelope deserve better. Maybe if I lived in Africa I’d see things differently.

Post by: bearpaw on March 08, 2013, 08:41:31 PM: Not everyone understands culling, I've seen it done in Australia and NZ, it's a necessary part of management to keep herds in line with habitat. More or less like shooting prairie dogs to prevent towns from growing too large.

I would think it would be more cost effective to offer severely discounted cull hunts, the kind where you pay to shoot a Trophy but get 2-3 Cull for free. Everyone benefits and I can guarantee you would have some extremely happy hunters telling all their friends they paid for one Trophy but got to actually harvest 4! If after researching a hunt and I'm torn between two outfitters, if one offers free (or severely reduced) Cull hunts on top of the hunt I'm there for and the other doesn't.....SOLD!

Like when you shoot a cow that has seen two of his buddies get shot, jumps through the fence and then gets shot. Doesn't make for the best tasting meat. Good for sausage, or any spiced meat. :twocents:

I'm sure the needy/starving people that will eat the meat probably won't mind...

Blesbok are very picky feeders, they select the sweetest grass first. In that video it seems that the food is a bit scarce and might be the reason for the cull. They eat twice the amount a sheep does and some farmers see them as competition to theire life stock. :twocents:
