Back at Mom's this morning, 9/29/08, the lack of sleep has taken it's tole on me. :o No scouting until tonight, going to Colville to resupply and look at the head mount I posted of the 54" bull. Saturday was a long day, up at 2 am, pulled in about noon, unloaded my pickup and off to the hills. Called a buddy who is muzzle loader elk hunting, he was out scouting, so we met up at 5 am Sunday to scout for moose and elk for him. After we got to our area we stopped and bugled no answer. I then bull called and cow called didn't hear an answer either. We drove to the area at the top of the mountain where I decided to start my scouting. As we walked out I glassed the meadow where I call, and saw 5 moose, it was a least 4 miles away but one was real big. Couldn't tell his horn size with my 10x42's, don't know if they came to my calls or not. I then bull called and glassed the moose below, I then heard a bull grunt to my left about 200 yd's away. :IBCOOL: This was way cool. I racked the brush and grunted back, he answered right away, and I could hear him beating the brush. I then cow called, his grunts were very loud now and boy did he beat the brush. I have to say, this was way, way, cool. Didn't want to bump him so we backed out. Not bad for the first hr. of day light. We did about 8 miles, GPS'ed some waypoints in this area, so I can find a closer way in. It's all behind gates. Saw one more cow as we drove out. Didn't see any moose last night, got to bed late. One thing I do know, after talking to my friends, these alot of 50" bulls running around. ;) I talked to a wood cutter about two good bulls, but there North of Hwy. 20, out of 49 unit. More to come.
-
Personally I think it kicks elk hunting in the ass. Probably why I spent more time talking moose than elk this last hunt. They fired early this year. They are already going full bore. LOVE IT! Good luck PA!
-
if you see one this big. SHOOT

Question? How big? What did it score? What unit? It has one deduct point on the bottom left palm, other then that good bull.
-
Thats Booners.....kick me now, I don't remember Netted 160 something, grossed 180. Panhandle Idaho

Good Luck!! Remember to find a good wallow with fresh pee and take a quick roll for added mojo.
-
Good luck to all of the moose tag holders! It looks like mother nature isnt quite cooperating for the opener tomorrow as temps will be in the mid 80s but it looks much better going into the weekend.
I have about a hour left of work then im heading north in my quest for the big one. I do have to say that this has been one of the longest days of my life and I cant wait to see what tomorrow and the next few weeks bring.
-
good luck!
-
They were hot in North Idaho and just east of Spokane. they fired about 2 weeks early. Should be a great opener. Should have at least a bull or two a day to look over.
-
good luck moose tag holders and friends. sounds like fun

First day out saw 3 cows one calf, a lot of bull pits, I know there's bulls there and I'll there be back tonight. I wanted to check an area where I saw 5 moose on Sunday. I think finnman's wife shot a big bull this morning, stay tuned for that one :dunno:  The evening of the first I went to the area I saw 5 moose, stayed the night, heard a bull grunting around 8:30pm. I started calling at 6:50am in the morning. I called for about a half hr. and heard a bull answer. He was coming and seemed very hot, but when I cow called, a cow let loose and that was it, he went back with her. I moved down to them and saw a very small bull and a cow. I then went into the timber when the wind changed and had them 20 yds in front of me but could not see them. So I backed out and came back in the evening, no moose at all. I hoped I didn't bump them out. The next morning this morning 10/3 at 6:30 I called 3 times, the bull answered and came out, I could tell he wasn't a shooter, so I shut up. He just came right to me. Got some good video. He was 38" maybe 40" at the most. If I need to fill my tag I know where he is. ;) Stay tuned, I'm resupplying at Mom and Dads, Taking a shower and well be gone for the week end.
-
SWEET! Its nice to hear some updates!
-
Good luck!

Well guys I guess talk is cheep :( I shot my first good bull I saw yesterday morning. Not the Booker bull I wanted, but he's a 45", heavy beamed, old bull with forked fronts. I'm having a little shooters remorse this morning, but you know, it was the best time of my life. A very good friend/hunting buddy came up for the weekend to hunt with me. Since I moved away we never get to hunt much together. Anyway, we arrived at the gated off road just before day light. He drove up from Spokane and I from Mom and Dad's. Had to be up at 3:30 am to make the drive. We got to the gate and 5 vehicles were parked there. :bash: Muzzleloader deer and elk hunters. We walked in about a mile in the rain. When the hillside opened up I walked to the edge of the hill and called. (bull grunts) About 30 seconds went by and I saw a big black animal walk by at about 100 yds to my left. I got my buddy's attention and told him what I saw. About that time we could here him grunting up on the road. I gave my video camera to my buddy and glassed the bull with rain soaked byno's. I guessed him at 50" and where he was and with my friend Mitch I decided to take him. He beat the brush a little and was coming fast, this whole thing happened real fast. He stopped at 37 yds. and turned away from me. I put the cross hairs on the center of the back of his neck and touched it off, he didn't go down, didn't even buck. I thought I missed :dunno: I though I'd drop him on the side of the road for a ez back. Well he ran, I shot him 2 more times, before he went out of site. We found him about 200yds down the hill from the road :IBCOOL: (Ground Shrinkage) I'll say no more about that. ;) I'm glad I had Mitch with me, I'd still be there getting him out by myself :bdid: We took pictures and started to work. After we boned out one side we decided to take a break and get my bike with my game cart that I made to pull with my bike. We were soaked to the bone. After a celebration beer and dry fleece close, we set out to finish. It took two trips out and we were loading the last of him at 4:30. We would have been done sooner if he dropped on the road. As I boned out the neck, I found my bullet in his neck bone. 175 gr. Rem. Core lock, from a 7mm-Rem. mag. You would think at that range his neck would have broken. :dunno: The bullet was a perfect mushroom. I saved the part of the neck where I found the bullet, I'm going to bitch to Rem. and show them pictures of the neck and bullet. Well now I have time to help Dad on the farm and scout for deer and bear hunt. I'm still on vacation. I'll post pictures later. :hello:
-
Congrats on the moose!!! Looking forward to the pics.
-
Congrats , cant wait to see the pics!
-
Thanks guys. The only bad thing about getting it done so early is Mom and Dad have a lot of work for me. :bash:
-
Good going! Be proud of your trophy. Love the moment with your friend. Too much is put into size of stuff. Look forward to your pics.
-
he's a 45", heavy beamed, old bull with forked fronts.

-
I cant wait to see the pics.. Ground shrinkage to 45" and memories of a lifetime. ill take that anyday.
-
Damn!!! Lot's of moose down with no pics yet. Call me impatient, but Sheeesh!!!
-
I agree, at least get some on here so the rest of us can drool.
-
I would agree about the shear size and toughness of a moose neck in the rut. I just spent 9 hours friday helping take care of my sister-in-laws Huckleberry bull. 10x12 with quad brow tines on both sides and 45 inches of spread. A true giant. It was definatley the herd bull. The size of the neck and thickness of the hide while I was caping it absolutley amazed me. After seeing that I doubt I would ever try shooting a bull moose in the neck with anything less than a .340 wby with superior bullets. In fact I don't think I would attempt that shot with any caliber.
-
CONGRATS TO YOU BOTH!!!!!!!
Nice job Richard, sounds like a real nice bull!
Rufous, I am looking forward to the story, I hope you found a trophy!
Finnman
-
482 lbs of boned out meat. Just the leg bones in.

Good deal. If it wasn't for you today I wouldn't have seen any of these. Thanks. I was about to grouch out and kill something.
-
Congrats on a good bull, PA.

-
Congrats Richard, well done young man.
-
Nice bull Richard! You either worked much harder at getting all of the meat scrap or your bull was just plain bigger bodied as I got 433# of meat (bone in the legs too). Still lots of great meat. bc
-
Ridgerunner, thanks for posting the picture. I'll get one to you of my game cart hooked to my bike. As far as the meat, I took all the rib and neck meat + the heart. I couldn't believe how big the T-Loins (The loins inside) were on him :cue: One side was the size of 4 deer :IBCOOL: He was tough, he took those 3 rounds like it was nothing. :mgun:
-
More pics!
-
Good Job PA. Happy barbecueing!

I would like to thank my buddy Mitch for being there for my hunt of a lifetime ;) A long time hunting buddy and family friend. Moving away has made it hard for us to get together to hunt. This hunt has made up for lost time.

Either you keep your freezer really clean or you had to buy a new one :chuckle: Congrats great pics
-
You would have had him out an hour earlier if you wouldn't have taken so many pics!!! :chuckle: Congrats
-
I moved what we had in it to a small freezer. And my wife defrosted and cleaned it. While I was gone. ;) Shot him at 7 am and loaded the last of the meat at 4:30 pm. Then I went to the Hospital in Chewelah for 6 stitches in my finger. :'(
-
I think my wife needs to have coffee with your wife :chuckle: maybe it will be done before i get back from MT :chuckle:

PA Ben,
Awesome! Great bull! Tell me about your rifle.
I picked it up new for this hunt. Any reason to buy a new gun :chuckle: It's a Ruger M77 Mark II in 7MM REM. MAG. Left hand. I'm right handed but shoot lefty. ;) Bausch & Lomb, 6x24x40.
-
Great job and pictures. Sounds like there needs to be a story about the 6 stitches, I bet it was I knife accident.
I just got back from Wyoming tonight and reading the moose adventures. I cut my thumb when tacking the hair off the skull cap on my antelope and it didn't require stitches.
I remember many years ago when my Buddy and I were hunting goats in the Olympics and when I was capping his out, I cut my thumb pretty bad. Lots of blood and bandage it up and continue. 3 weeks later when I was capping mine out I did the same exact move and recut the thumb that was getting close to being healed up.
I leave next Friday for my moose hunt.
Roger
-
Good luck Roger, I am still looking for a moose as well so dont feel alone. I am heading for Montana next week and will hit the moose again when I get back, hope you find a good one before I get back
-
The work was all done. We took the head and the last of the meat out on my game cart. It was raining hard and the knots on the small cord were wet and tight. So I got a knife to cut them. My buddy laid the head and cape on a tarp because of the mud. I reached down with my left hand to move the tarp and the head flopped over, the horn pinned my right hand with the knife down on to my left hand. Didn't get the tendon but it was close. :'( 6 stitches.
-
Enjoyed the pictures Pa Ben. Can't imajine the pull of the loaded cart with the bike in the wet dirt road. :o
Hope it was down hill.
Great stories to add to your OIL hunt, even with the moose getting the last laugh in cutting your hand. :P
-

Very nice! Did you get a final score on him? It looks like I need to do some homework on judging those bad boys!

Very enjoyable! What moose call do you have?

I purchased moose hunting videos, on hunting and calling. I used a small cone and grunted him in. I did 3 grunts and he came right in. A bull moose will most always come in to a grunt, they love to fight. They will size each other up and might not lock horns, but will came in for a look. I did have a bull coming in to grunts one morning and I did a cow call, a cow back behind him got pissed and started calling, he turned and went back to her. I would say bull grunts are the best, there ez to do w/your mouth, no store bought call needed.
