Title: giant bull elk?
Post by: DTH on March 10, 2013, 08:44:21 PM
I heard that at the Yakima sportmans show the "best of show" went to a bull elk killed in 2012 that net scored 459 bc. I haven't seen pictures but have heard from a  friend that it grossed 490ish. Did any of the huntwa community see this bull? I am just trying to verify that this creature is real or a farm bull. I wouldn't think they would give "best of show" to a pen raised elk..

There are no farm elk in this state, at least none that are "hunted." It's illegal. One good thing about this state.

State record is 436 4/8 killed in 2008. No bulls that big killed in  washington or everyone would know about it. That score I believe would be in the top 5 of any bc bull killed ever. Funny how scores blow out of proportion in stories. Not from wa probably farm bull.

ive seen pics of that bull, it came out of the blues on a govenor tag and I heard it didnt qualify because he rode a non-comercial plane the same day?? idk if thats true or not but I saw pictures of the bull in hte mountains and it definitly had a potential of 460...DANDY

I realize it would be in the top 5 in the world. Thats is why I am surprized that know one has said a single word about it. The hunters name was Jack Crawford but it apparently didn't say what county or state it was harvested in.

The guy that got in trouble was Todd Reicher in 2007. To the post above,I would think he had to give the bull to the game department if he broke the law to get it. I may be wrong but it still could be measured for a state record just not Boone and Crockett and no hunter would get credit for it. My guess is its a farm bull from somewhere. A bull that big doesn't get taken with out the whole world hearing about it.

There are some monsters killed that fly under the radar.

pretty sure the bull at the yakima sportsmans show was 429 not 459 and I'm also thinking it said colorado maybe.  I remember thinking it didn't seem fair to have it in the same category as wa state bulls for a contest at a washington sportsmans show

I was told it didn't have much color leading me to believe it was probably a hanford area elk or a pen  raised carrot muncher. Either way it is wrong if they allow those farm elk to be entered into the antler competition, if thats what is was?!

You guys realize a couple tribal guys nailed those big bulls out on the hanford.   VERY WELL could have been him.

The bull scored 459 and I was told by one of the scorers that it was shot in Pennsylvania. By looking at the bull I don't know how it couldn't of been a high fenced bull.

There is a 40 or so page thread about this particular bull and several of his counterparts, including a huge typical.  The thread was locked as it had to do with heated tribal conversations.   High fences, well, sort of.  Hanford preserve.  Apparantly off limits to all hunting unless you are a tribal member.   :)  I assume Boone and Crockett won't recognize it.    Not sure about the state.

Still burns me about his harvest.   I have boycotted the Yakima sportsmans show for a couple years now because I disagree with the politics for no bettter word, of this sort of thing.  Maybe I'll wrap my head around it sometime.

I grabbedn touched (molested haha joking) the bull in question at the show.  The antlers appeared very old as if sun damaged and were clearly labeled Colorado as state of harvest.  There were some nice animals there.  I got pics on my camera st home and they were not of the Hanford bull.

You can never trust anyone sending them emails I guess.  The high quality bull(s) pictures are mine.  Most were taken in 2009.  I have some nice 16x20s and 20x30 framed shots of him at home with better poses.  L-lens shots with little to no cropping.  I know he lived at least a couple more years after 2009.

Amazing how quickly things leak onto Internet forums.

Those pics where no new news they where on hear a while back , great shots and the only way to keep them from being shared is to not send them. I really dont see why a guy wouldnt want them shared any how . they wern't gonna get hunted except for tribal ( if you call that hunting )There's be a few giant bulls in the last few years , look at nailbenders and that Tennaway bull along with plenty of blues bulls . I know the central raffle bull was also a dandy . I think quite a few don't get entered in the book .

Coachcw

I did not send out high res shots via e-mail fortunately.  I sent some to RMEF and was hoping I could get something in their magazine.  Dont know if they will/have been used.  Here is an expensively framed 20x30 print I have on my wall of him that was essentially uncropped from the camera.

Thats the only thing bad about this forum... Once a big bull has its picture taken and is found out where it lives it gets shot. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Boycotting the Yakima sportsman show you didn't miss anything.  I went there for the first time and it was terrible.  Don't know where all the racks were as I went saturday evening and I don't think there was 30 racks total.  The whole show had very few outfitters, no taxidermists, lots of candles and junk knives for sale though.

At least one was killed last fall it was I believe. There was also a very nice bull from there killed by a vehicle 2 years or so ago.

The 2in bones pics are dead.  Non-typical fall 2011 tribal kill. Typical summer 2012 motor vehicle collision.

wasn't there a huge bull killed on blewitt last year during the fire ? those road kills are real bummers !

Yep, it  sucks big time that 2 big 400 plus bulls had to die that way. :bash: :(  better that way then an undeserving killer like the non-typical.

If the bull in question came from CO, I would almost guarantee that it is was a farm bull. I believe that CO has a fair number of high fenced game farms, and CO isn't really known for its big bulls.

ok! Delete the first reply why?
the answer to where most of the big hanford bulls are is.......... on a reservation or shipped to someone bidding on ebay for $$$$. either way its a shame that we allow this to happen.  The problem with this site and country is that the truth hurts and we all are too darn sensitive!  If I was lying then I would be the only one looking dumb!  But the truth is that the big bulls in this state mostly are shot by the guys that don't have seasons or regulations!

Your reply earlier and the personal insult it contained was uncalled for.

Don't do it again.

the guy that got in trouble in WA with the govenors tag actually got to keep his bull he just had to pay out the a$$ in fines and penalties but the last i heard the guide he hired was out of oregon and didnt have a license for washington and when he got busted he tried taking the hinter down with him and i never heard what became of it. i believe that was the "spider bull"

The "spider bull" is Denny Austad's bull from Utah.

Josh is right. Not the spider. The bull you are talking about if I remember right hookedonquack was nick named the "bird bath" bull. The guide had applied to get the licenses but had not got it yet still took the hunter and shot the bull. I know the guy that guy. The story sounds just like his deal so I think that is the bull you are talking about.

That is why i don't go to the sportsman show.  because i got tired of seeing 6 or 8 bulls all from the same guy shot that same year.

If it is not from an open season should not be allowed to even enter the building.
