My buddy and I were lucky enough to be selected as a group for Kapowsin, I wasn’t expecting to be drawn since neither of us had points for spring bear but stoked that we did!
I have never hunted this area before (mostly stick to the eastside) nor have I hunted spring bear. Not looking for anyone’s honey hole but any advice on the area would definitely be appreciated.
Thanks,
Taylor

your going to have to buy some kind of pass. Look for tree damage and old old logging roads with go fresh grasses growing that are in drainages.
-
you will need a permit 350 dollars. you will get a map and key, go on there web site read up on the rules .you can only hunt on 1 side where the office is .for spring bear
you will be able to hunt the the closed roads that are closed for traffic all year except for spring bear season. the permit is good to January 1. you will have to sign in at the booth every day.get your permit early so y and you friend can get to know the area that is the best advise. good luck :and have fun
-
I also drew Kapowsin on a group tag. Turns out unless the others in your group are your spouse or children they will also have to get a $350 permit even if they are riding along in your truck. Buying one of the 1200 available permits does get you entered into a chance to win a bull elk drawing for six people. I bought my ticket tonight and there were only 31 left of the 1200 they allow. My permit number though was very close to the 1200 number - not sure what to make of that. Starting to review the regulations and maps of the area.
-
I thought there was a permit available for just the spring bear hunt, for $100?
-
Not that I saw on the Hancock website for Kapowsin.
https://hancockrecreationnw.com/kapowsin/about/about-kapowsin
-
I too was drawn and will be calling the Tree farm tomorrow for pass information. I put in last year and was not drawn but did call and at that time you could buy a "reduced" price pass that was good for just the Spring bear hunting season.
I believe that is still the case but will know for sure tomorrow.
Yee Haw...Pretty excited about the draw though and can't wait to do a little scouting
-
Used to be 100 for just the spring bear pass, still hope it's the same. Otherwise not worth it. I used to get the 350 pass but hardly used it since I mostly hunt Muleys.
-
You will get something from hancock in the mail here soon, you WILL be able to access the area for 100$ for just the spring bear season. Good luck  I will probably run into you there somewhere
-
I will be out scouting also......
-
I got an email from Hancock today confirming the $100 pass for Spring Bear. I drew as well :chuckle: - I don't have any information on the area, for those of you that do - are the huntable, bear damaged areas big enough to absorb everyone drawn?
-
The lady at the Orting Hancock location called me back and confirmed that they will be sending out notifications to those who drew Spring Bear tags for Kapowsin for a $100 access permit that will only be good for the spring bear season. She said that the information packet and $100 permit availability will be closer to the opener. Kapowsin Spring Bear land is limited to that accessible from the main gate only. That information will also be in the packet.
-
So here's the skinny on the information packets from Hancock (Kapowsin tree farm) The maps of the property and gate keys will not be available for the spring bear permit hunt on the tree farm until after April 2nd. On or after that day you will need to bring I.D. and a cashiers for 100 dollars made out to HTRG clients to the office. Never been myself so i am not sure where its at.
According to Claudia the 100 pass does not get you on the property BEFORE the 15th so preliminary scouting.... There won't be any unless i guess you buy the 350.00 pass.. Kind of a bogus deal right there.
Google Earth with have to be it for the scouting
-
If you Google Map 'camp 1 road orting' it will take you about 200yds up the hill from the main office. I bought the full year permit on Tuesday and just received my key and packet of info.
-
Thanks Brett!
I am half tempted to buy the whole year pass too but really don't wanna hunt all my seasons without any "bro's". I will however be taking a close look while i'm in there to see if in the years to come it's a place i wanna hunt.
Plus i would like to get firewood on some weekends and stock up my family members...Kinda change up the workout routine with some cutting and stackin in the woods!
Good luck
Bob
-
when you buy your pass you will recieve your wood tags for your 5 cords, there are maps at the gates for the years wood cutting areas
-
Id be willing to show a spring bear pass holder some spots if interested. Ive gotten the yearly pass as far back as i can remember. I haven't done any scouting yet this year but i know where ive seen bears in the past. So if ur cool with someone new riding along with you send me a pm.
-
I saw more bears out there last year during deer season than I ever have.
-
Gonna be hunting the "southside" of the tree farm according to the document i just received in the mail.
-
With the spring bear access permit can you take a buddy with you? I know that isn't an option with the regular pass.
-
Its another 100.00 bucks! The only thing i don't know is if you can buy that second 100 dollar pass and use for this buddy and then that buddy etc... Or does it have to be "issued" to a certain individual and only THAT person can use it.. I mean the only hunter is the permit holder why should they really care who is with you as long as everybody in the truck has a permit.
They're probably a whole laundry list of legal reasons why they need to know who's on the property at all times, but i kind of thought the daily sign in would cover that.. I dunno
All i know is i am starting to get stoked and need to get up to Tacoma Sportsman and site in the new 300!
Also seriously considering and early morning road trip to Moses Lake area and see if any dogs will come to the Foxpro
-
I think she's ready to do work in the field.
200 yards with the Savage 300 win mag sprinkle in some Savage 22-250 and you've got a real dead critter!
Today was the first day with the 300... it was set about 3" low at a 100yrds. so pulled it up to about +1" at a 100 and the down range at 200 was pretty good!
The orange and black target is all 22-250...... The 22-250 is a great gun and very subtle after shooting the 300.
Great day at the range with sunshine and gun powder in the air.. Only a couple things i like more then that
-
Yea, I got wound up about doing the spring hunt right up to the cash deposit, that busted it for me. If they want hunters to thin bears, then open the gates. I guess from where I'm sitting, when a timber company pays only pennies for property taxes I feel they owe the rest of the state citizens at least free recreational access. Somewhere out there in Kapowsin one bear more than what would have been, or they just have to pay a trapper to remove it.
I'll just take a fat one in the fall instead.
-
So if I'm reading your post correct, you applied for the spring permit. Was selected. now you find out you have to pay to enter, but won't.
Did you read the reg's before you entered? I don't get it. Why waste your time, money, points and the tag?
-
Nope, I messed up and did not read the print in my rush to get the drawing done on time. It was my first attempt at a spring draw, so I never realized it was a pay to hunt situation. My points, My mistake.
-
Heading up to Kapowsin within the hour!! Should be a nice sunny day for a hike with a gun in my hand if nothin else.

Didn't you get the memo from Hancock? They are shut down for fire danger... :bash: :bash:.

lol funny guy

I guess... but it's also the tag a bunch of other people would have liked to had, and didn't get drawn. .. so you not reading the regs kind of jacked another guy up too. But, then you aren't alone as I've heard of several people who never wanted to bear hunt, they just wanted the $100 access to hunt sheds for a couple months.. :bash: :bash: :bash:

how much huntin would you do if you had access. Id spot you 25 if you pony up the rest.
-
If you buy the pass they'll give you a map of all the tree damaged areas, highlighted in red. I was in there last week and went to some of those areas and saw two bear. But just way down in the swampy nasty bottoms.
-
Seeing two bears that early into the season is pretty good luck

I now have spent probably 17 -18 hours up there in the 3 times i have been up and have not seen any bear.. Today i saw a Coyote a couple hundred yards in front of the truck on the main line..He dipped into the trees never to be seen again..(He was gonna get the side arm had he peeped out)
a rabbit and 2 deer in 6+plus hours.. When i was up there early Friday in the rain i saw about 20 deer at various locations another rabbit and thats it.
Got a friggen sunburn out there today.
We'll keep after them. :hunter:..I am hoping in a couple weeks there will be better opportunity in terms of animals moving around because i literally glassed acres and acres of clear cuts... Looked from long distances with the spotting scope and even tried some predator callin (cub distress and the usual rabbit distress) but nothing seems to respond. :bash:. Gotta admit i was to the point i was gonna hit a coyote if he came out and be happy with the outing. Oh well
-
I wasn't hunting, of course. But there up and moving, just not very much. There is one spot, I'm not sure i remember how to get there. But it is a steep steep rocky incline and to the left down the hill is where i saw them. It is a big swampy mess. Depending on how comfortable one is shooting 500 yards, its a perfect vantage point. Good luck to all you permit holders!

Oh yea i know right where your talkin about.. :yike: :yike: :bash:...hahahahaaaa..geez
-
Obviously it changes year to year but when I had the tag a few years ago, it was amazing the increase in fresh sign I saw towards the end of May, so don't get discouraged. The first two weeks kind of seemed like a waste of time, and being the first time I drew a spring bear tag I was giving it 100% effort from the get go. I did lots and lots of glassing but the only one I caught in the open was right off the mainline and he was moving pretty quickly through the clearcut. I feel like it would be prime time right now to just be walking grassy side roads and skidders trying to catch one eating grass.
Have you guys been seeing fresh peels?
-
its not even close to time for them to start peeling. when you see one inch long fresh starts on trees is when they will start peeling. that's when the sap and starches start moving from roots to new growth
-
headin out in about 10 minutes.. Will be in the 0600-0601 area.
-
Fishing with the kids today, will be out tomorrow.

Good luck bob  I haven't been going up since the first 2 days. Will be hitting it again though this next week during the afternoons, let me know if you want to hit up that nasty swamp sweetlou is talking about I dont mind putting in some work... :chuckle: :dunno:

Well put in another 8 hours up at Kapowsin yesterday..Saw lots a wildlife just not the furry critters i am after. Spent most of the morning around the 0600 loop that has plenty of cuts with fresh growth sproutin through..Lots of deer eating them from sun up to about 8:30. Spent the mid morning early afternoon circling up to about the 2000-2200 foot elevation. That's were i came across my first peel of a small pine tree.Looked kind of like an elk scrape. Small tree with broken branches and stripped trunk. Small band of elk but still no bear.
I spent the afternoon down just past camp 5 were i spotted lots of cabbage patches but nothing appeared tore up as one would expect if there was a critter in there..No turned over mud or tracks present. Did see a cool beaver damn with lots of trees chewed down...Had the .45 ready in case it sprung from the water and wanted to dance.. Kinda surprised the tree farm doesn't deem that thing problematic. Oh well
Gonna take a few days off and nurse my pride back to health and then maybe hit it up again later this week with Notellupcreek and Scottfrick.
Did meet a guy who spends sometime on this site as well...Great to meet you Al!! Get your account together because we wanna hear how your successful bear hunts goes down brother..Your determination will breed success and we wanna hear about damn it!!
-
I was past camp 5 last weekend in a walk in area and I saw all those cabbage patches, ton's of them, I would think that is a good place to look. It snowed like crazy on me, I was at 2400 feet. Is the snow level back up and is it gone? Good luck
-
No the snow was all gone at least in those areas..I was into snow last weekend up a little higher towards Camp 7? But i was goin up some pretty steep loggin roads until i thought this was kinda dumb to be this high if the animals don't like really cold climate and their looking for something other then frozen food.
Plus the really warm weather we had last week got rid of all that down low. Definitely considering a 'stake out' on one of those large Skunk cabbage plots.. I think either just at sun break if your in position or late evening is the ticket until some other roughage comes in for them to eat on and they're exposed in a clear cut or large bowl.
Have yet to see much tree peeling but then again i have been stickin mainly to clear cuts and not under the tree canopy to much but i'm sure things are gonna change pretty quick in these next couple weeks in terms of visible sign and damage to property so i'm ready .... love this guy ------> :hunter: but when a bear finally hits my crosshair it will be more like this guy----> :mgun: talk about tree damage..hahahahaha
Best of luck

Suppose to get hot by wednesday/thursday, hopefully will help do some waking up. Liljozie and I plan on going out wednesday or thursday afternoon, hopefully will have some good news to bring back and post here.

I know right... I 'm thinkin Thursday i need to hit the late afternoon 5 o'clock until dark routine and see how that works out.
Wonder if the truck drivers are seeing them early in the morning.. I was in there signing in at 5:10 and a loggin truck when cruisin right past the shack.. I thought you moe-foe..So much for pickin up the easy road runner in the early morning.. It would be nice to know if they are seeing a bunch of them around a particular location though.
Under the guise of the hunt itself( to help eradicate some of the property damaging bears) you would think they would want that knowledge known.... and maybe they do i iust have not asked anybody in the office. Kinda like asking the guy at the boat house how's the fishin where they catchin um and what are they using. Sounds actually reasonable to me

They used to tell you where the bait stations were, back when it was legal. I would talk to clyde if you see him up there and ask if they still feed the bears to help keep them off the trees.
-
yes they feed. however during the spring hunt they only feed on the bridge gate side wich is not open to spring bear hunting. besides just being in the vacinity of "bait" could get you in trouble
-
sense my good ol notellum buddy works this first may weekend ( :bdid: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: ), whats everyones weekend plans?
-

I wouldn't say its that far off, I have those little brown corn kernel pieces that come off the tip of the limbs just before the new growth starts all over my concrete, so I'd say its just about to start
-

Thanks for the offer, but the cost is not the point.
Each of the big timber companies want animals removed for damage control. A couple are now charging hunters to remove animals that they want cleared out. If everyone eagerly agrees to pay for access, then pretty soon the only hunting allowed will be to the highest bidding hunting club while the rest of us are locked out. Right now, Weyerhaeuser has hunting only by lease in the following states:
Alabama
Arkansas
Louisiana
Mississippi
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Texas
Only Washington and Oregon have yet to go hunting lease only, but it's in the works.
Every time one of us buys permission from a timber company we're only teaching them to charge as much as the market can bare. Those huge tax breaks that timber companies enjoy should also come with a reasonable amount of public access, without spending hundreds of dollars at the gate.
Just my .02 on why I won't pay.
Goshawk
-
I will never pay to hunt timber land
-
Heading to Kapowsin tomorrow evening (Thursday)..Hope to be in the area around 4-4:30.
See if i can put the smash down :hunter: on sumpin tyin to sneak in for a snack..Weather looks awesome!! Any suggestions from those who have spent sometime in that area but didn't get drawn for a tag would be kewl? And no C-post directions!!hahahaa

Bob/Woodman throw us a bone...what did you see tonight?
Just got back...Met up with Scott Frick and we sat on some cuts and drove lots of roads... Saw 1 deer, and probably 15-20 elk and no bears.. We glassed a lot of timber, lot of clear cuts and drove back into the skunk cabbage flats by camp 5 and didn't see any bear at all.
So the quest continues.. Wish i had better news but we were on the hillside at 5 ish and hung out glassing for 1.5 hours before we moved to other areas in hopes of surprising something but just didn't happen
Thanks Scott for hangin out lets do it again soon
Bob

brett this is a Kapowsin bear from earlier. They are in there. I spent time with another fellow in there today and had a great time. He really is a shed hunter and between the two of us we have been getting quite a few. The vegetation is starting to sprout now and there are some lush spots if you look. For those that did not see, I photographed a nice sow with triplet cubs a couple of days ago and posted under the bear hunting thread.

Its a white Toyota Tundra. Were you on the highway or sumpin cuz i dont remember passing any other vehicles inside the gate beside another buddy from this site named Al. But he drives a jeep.

Not sure if i am going to make it up this weekend (without a big fight!) laff.. Should hit it right now but after i dropped Scott off lastnight at his car i went to work all night so i am gettin rummy needin some sleep.. We'll see how it goes

Wow thankfully the car was still there when we got back. I wrote a note letting them know I am a yearly pass holder and that I was riding along with a spring bear hunter. I left it on my dash for this exact reason.
-

didnt get out this morning as my ploy didnt work... Hahaha.. No worries though ill get out again pretty soon. Did make some progress on the honey do list so i should at least get a furlough for a day or two. Been on the trimmer this mornin shes comjn together nicely.
-
First bear sighting in the Kapowsin today. Two bear cubs at 20 yds. Brown color phase and looked extremely healthy. They were curious, kept stopping to stare at me. The sow must have been ahead of them in the timber as I never saw her but they soon scrambled off into the timber. They were about the size of a medium lab.
-
saw 1st bear of the year sat night. was into them pretty much all weekend but it didnt quite all come together, yet.

Heading to kapowsin. Dang its hot out

Great landscaping.
All that's missing is a well hidden bear feeding barrel!!
-
Thanks Goz!!
Do have some mineral licks out on the back property for the black tail.. Makes it a little easier to get some pictures of the critters back there.. Wonder if that how a lot of these pictures on here happen...hmmmmmm
-
Check Woodman's bear trail cam vids taken in the Kapowsin...on the Trail Cam forum! Amazing.

Snow gone enough to get up behind the lookout? Saw quite a bit of bear sign up that way last year.

Go get em  liljozie and I didnt see much activity last night other than some elk and a porcupine. Starting to see new growth on a lot of trees though.
-
Headed up there with the girl hoping to get her first bear on the ground! :)
-
Yea i did not see much up there today! A coyote actually was about it. I did however find some signs that things are starting to happen including things two peels. The first one was really fresh i would say in the last 24 hours based on the color of the peel being so white... A closer look shows the sap raising to the top not sure if the picture will show that much detail but it was definitely there..The 2nd peel was on a tree about 20 feet behind this one and looked a little older due to color but i would venture to say within the last couple days.
I think my next trip up will include sitting on this spot from a distance either at sun up or early evening and see if i can intercept it on its way back to a bedding area.
-
Nice find Bob Williams! been pretty quite on this forum... figured I would get it going again. Liljozie and I went in last night until dark. No bear sitings but did find some areas that are tattered with last years peels. Talked to a nice guy in a small old black ford, he was new for kapowison and hadn't been seeing any new sign at all either, just out exploring. Anyone been seeing any sort of fresh sign? Next weekend Liljozie and I will be in there all weekend, send us a PM if you need any help! would be nice just to see some action, let alone helping a fellow hunt wa friend out

If i could only find the VANDALS that did that damage!! I am getting up there again this week.. The office has not recorded one harvest report, not that every animal gets checked but i have not even heard a single gun shot in 7 trips up..Kinda crazy...But its comin and when we get into them i hope the wait will have been worth it... Keep tryin... :hunter: WHICHWAYDIDHEGO...WHICHWAYDIDHEGO

Haven't been hearing any shots either! I think one guy in a big white dodge is a bow hunter that keeps parking in the same area, he had a big archery decal in the back anyway. wonder if anyone else is slinging arrows up there? I might take my bow up with me this weekend and see if I can't pluck one

Been trying to help k357 get a bear and last night from 30 ft seen my first 2013 spring bear in person. To bad k357 was at work. Went up this morning and the heavy fog kinda threw a wrench in the plans. Well keep after it, good luck all

Prepare to burn a lot of fuel and say good by to your good tire tread. Focus on the swamp areas if you can. There are plenty of great spots to beat the brush.
-
Gonna head up tomorrow late afternoon around 4:30- 5 oclock and see whats up..Packin the Foxpro with the new sound library and decoy..Be nice to pull something out of the tree's for a dirt nap.

You wont have to worry about burning fuel if you are actually hunting :chuckle:

I hope that foxpro does well for ya! Been trying a couple of weak calls off the predator phone app when its slow going :chuckle: Well I will be watchin for a post from ya closely bob, good luck
-
Another jacked up trip to the hills. Beat the brush a little bit on this attempt as rumor had it they are in the cover and not feedin in the open or on "spurs". I gotta admit its tough to stay quiet with the crispy cover on the forest floor. I did run into quite a bit.of older tree peels.. The one i posted about 10 days ago is moldy lookin and didnt appear.to have been touched. I hiked up and in there though and found lots of piles of.loose pooh that was probably dumped today sometime. Didnt get.the foxpro out as i perched on a great lookin clear cut that had great elevation lots of vegetation, stump, skunk cabbage and greenry just no friggen bears...i saw.one doe that was standing on the concrete over by the office as i was leaving. Very slow day for me and now rain for the next couple days. Sucks.. Guess im not sure they are up higher or..... I have sign so something has been there. Still not a single gun shot heard in 8 trips up. I think they're all eating at the feed stations in Eatonville.
-
Couple of pictures up at Kapowsin..Some old peels, wet crap, nice clear cut and a doe
-
Id be willing to show a spring bear pass holder some spots if interested. Ive gotten the yearly pass as far back as i can remember. I haven't done any scouting yet this year but i know where ive seen bears in the past. So if ur cool with someone new riding along with you send me a pm.
Ill pass :chuckle:
-
Bob Williams, don't give up man. They're in there. Like I was telling Woodman, in a moment you can be in the right place at the right time and - 'Kapow!' Just never know. I spent three hours on Sat. hiking the thick timber in the pouring rain trying to get to an area that looked bearish from across the valley. No fur, but had a great time. Beats smelling car fumes in the city. Let's get Kapowsin on the board!
-
Nah I'll never give up on them and if i don't bag sumpin in the spring they'll be on the menu in the fall. Having never hunted in there before, seeing this as a depredation type hunt i would have figured there would have been at least one seen by me even if he was so far away there was no shot, maybe something cross the road 1000 yards a head. Something to give ya a little momentum. I have not seen any trees being thrashed or an animal running for cover as he pushed through an opening. Nothing at all in probably 60 -80 hours in the field since the opener and thousands of acres glassed!
Obviously they're in there as is evident by the peels we find but i'll be damned if i can find them... or anybody else that's in this forum at this point..Or any of the other hunters i've talked with out in the field along the way.. Thats a lot of people...A lot of combined knowledge and hours and hours in the field with a goose egg on the board..Gettin a little frustrated :bash:
Was expecting better that's all
I'll keep after them and hopefully the longer weekend with provide somebody with a treasured memory.
Best of luck Brett
Bob
P.M. me what your guys plans are for the weekend if you're gonna be in there and maybe we can hook up and plot something out.
-
Bob i am there with ya... but I know that it can only get better from here!!!! Liljozie and I are gonna hit it hard up there this weekend, friday saturday sunday.... save for the am clam dig sunday  We will get with you on maybe meeting up sometime this weekend if you are gonna be up there

Its all good! Billdo likes to ruffle feathers. Lucky for him tho I know who he is :chuckle: if I wasn't at home helping a wife who's father just had a quadruple bypass surgery I would play his little game but ooh well.

Nice!
I am going to make a road trip down to Lower Columbia Community College on Friday as my son is a pitcher for Mt. Hood C.C. and they are playing in the final four NWAAC Championships. Don't know yet what time because his game is predicated by how they do Thursday in the opener.. But it's either 12:30 Friday afternoon (If they lost) or 7:30 Friday night (If they won). Also have a buddy from a predator hunting club who wants to make a run down by Olympia to deal with some problem coyotes on this ladies property. Good job for 22-250 ye haw.
Let me know what you guys are gonna do so i can pick the fight early and run out of the house with my huntin stuff!!! HAHAHAHAAHAA.. Just kiddin on that but i will have to share some time unless she works the weekend.
-
Stack em' up Bob! Good luck to your son's team also.
-
Thanks Elk247..
Gonna be tough livin in THAT tournament as there are a lot of kids who have dreams and desires of playing big league or bigger school baseball and that energy can be tough to harness...Especially as an opposing pitcher.. I still love to watch him play as much as i did when they were all a bunch of little kids in little league and then all the select years and travel.
ahhhhh..the memories...
-
Is it the weekend yet... I'm ready to go boom boom with the bears :hello:
-
Go now...
-
I would if there was no such thing as bills in my life and work :bash:
-
Heading up on Sunday, got a few cam's up (or had them up a few weeks ago)... hopefully I'll get one.
-
Good luck Taylor-
Funny about the cams but not really..I hope all your stuff is still in place with some good pics so you can compare photo's with the beast on the ground!!
Good luck and get Kapowsin on the board!
-
I have been up there several times and haven't seen anything. Hopefully the last couple weeks of the season pay off
-
I saw five bears up there and I didn't even get checked in at the gate until 4pm today. Only one big headed boar, one small young bear and a good sized mommy bear with two tiny babies all were seen from the truck on the main line fyi... Saw big bear a few hours before dark! Good luck!
-
I've seen only 1 bear off the main line in 10 years of going up there.

I must have just been lucky or the fact that I didn't have a tag!

Is this site working yet?
-
Spent another 6 plus hours up at Kapowsin yesterday. Got up there about 1 and quickly came across a tree that was literally ripped apart..By the coloring of the tree i think i just missed it.. Put a slow creep on through the trail that ran out the back side of where I was at but didn't locate or see OR hear the bear. I put some miles on the boots walking off roads and spurs in hopes of hearing a bear tearin apart a stump or see one grubbin on some grass or hell using the road system for a means of travel..No such luck.. I creeped for about 2 hours and then headed up to some cuts i have been watching from time to time and i tell ya it looks everything the part, but i'll be damned if i can find a bruin anywhere in those thousands of acres.
Spent the final 2 hours sitting on a ridge line that allowed me to watch literally hundreds of acres with the bino's...From 5 p.m. to 7p.m. ....I saw A rabbit.....laff..(so Brutal)
During some of my creepin around earlier in the day i did manage to see a blacktail deer and a nice big bull in velvet..He'll be a stud in another few months.
Hopefully everything works this time!
Got 2 maybe 3 days left in me for Kapowsin- If i don't bag something between now and the end it won't be for lack of tryin..I think i have been in there 11 times and have not seen one bear...CRAZY
Great country in there though and i WOULD consider gettin the year round permit.. That Elk draw would be a lottery
Guess i will figure out pictures later...Not sure what the issue is
-
anybody else having trouble uploading photo's ?
I have resized them to be about 38k a piece and it still won't work..By the time they are small enough it'll be a "thumbnail"

Ran up after work last night with my wife and daughter to quickly check a trail cam. Had a 120lb black bear run in front of the truck at 9:15pm on our way out. The girls were very excited to see that.
-
Bob I used Tapatalk mobile app to post the bull elk pic above. Click image for the picture to show up in the post. Hopefully that will work for you.
-
Bob, if I may, your wasting your time in the cuts. Find a south to SW facing slope with 20 year old timbers preferably at or just under the snow line. Old spurs around these areas work good at first and last light for bears. Remember, bears have excelent hearing, park your rig far enough away not to spook them eating the grass in the ditches. Any other time, you will need to be deep into the timbers. I suggested in an earlier post to save your time for the last week or so, this is the time you need to be hitting it hard. Don't give up bro, you got this!
-
If it isn't tough enough for those of us hunting through the reprod all over Kapowsin there are some who are making it harder. Hiked through camp 5 flats yesterday and found good bear sign and track. But some of the scat had weird seeds along with the grass. Some even looked like the bears were eating dog food.
Today there was fresh scat on the side road full of oats and smelled like a molasses cookie. Too bad they can't control where the Bears poop. Didn't take too long to backtrack the prints and find someone's bait site. Good thing I carry my Moultries in my pack. We got one on Sunday (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,127040.0.html (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,127040.0.html))... We also saw a lot of other sign - much more than I have been seeing. Someone will also get some pic's of us on there trail cam :).
-
Taylorb, is that a bear rub?
-
Wow... That's a proud pile..Make your pants fit better kinda stuff.. :chuckle:
Are you saying possibly one of the reason's i can't seem to smash on a bruin in Kapowsin is because they may be in a "FOOD INDUCED" coma brought on by some brothers in the hunting communities.. Whew i was beginning to think i just really sucked as a hunter!!
That really sucks for a couple reason's
A.) Its against the law
B.) Its unethical
C.) People have been putting in a lot of time the old fashioned way
D.) Most importantly sometimes i get hungry up there and they didn't tell me where the SNACK SHACK is stashed.. :chuckle:
That's very frustrating and i'm sure whoever is doing it will lend you to believe they're just putting out camera's (and bait) for scouting purposes in the fall... EVEN WHEN THEY IS A HUNT IN PROGRESS!!!
Hate to say it- That IS a camera i would probably steal and if you wanted it back you could claim it at the wardens station
:mor:
-
I'd say there is a good chance the bait site is probably a legal one put there by a contractor for Hancock. Its not at all uncommon for them to feed bears in an attempt to keep them from killing trees. Its still worth mentioning to a game warden though.
And taking the camera could very well get you in trouble, I know two guys who bait legally for forest companies and usually they have a camera set up to snap pics of the bears coming in... when you go tell the game warden and hand him the camera you stole, whats he going to think when he finds out its a legal bait site? Just something to think about.
-
I think the bait sites used by the timber companies are fairly clear that they are not for hunting. Was the feed on the ground loose or in a barrell? Got a pic of the bait site?
-
Hancock is currently only feeding on the bridge gate side.
-
Just to clarify, I didn't take a camera. I carry my Moultries in my pack to set on good sign. I set them up to get pics of whoever is running the 'Molasses and Oats" stand. Also another huntwa member pm' d me he had his game cam stolen from the same area in March, cut his cable. He's got pics of the people entering the area. They'll be back.
-

 gotcha, thats a great idea
-
The baiting stations are in the Eatonville side according to the office folks..That's why there is no hunting allowed over there... i'm sure (relatively sure) the camera probably took a picture of the person or people who set the camera..I usually always have a picture of some stupid guy monkeyin with my camera until i realize it was taking pictures of me as i was setting and turnin it on.
Camera or the camera's card? and leave him note where it can be found.. Or just leave it alone and hunt the game trails goin into the area.... :chuckle: i'm kidding of course but its hard to un see what you saw and you seem to be a pretty straight up guy Brett.
Best of luck the rest of the way brother I will be up Wednesday and likely Thursday if needed
-
Its bridge gate and eatonville sides. thats why you can only hunt the south side. I know who feeds for them.
-
Well the day before my final approach and more of the same for me in Kapowsin. I'm turning the key in tomorrow as i have some other things i need to tend to and if 12 trips up doesn't get one I'm backing away from the table.. My 6 dollar (+3 points) tag has probably cost me 500 bucks in fuel and lots and lots of hours in the field (Pedometer says 20,478 steps today!)with not much to show put some pretty cool pictures of just about every animal except a bear...Got bear rubs and peels...Got bear sheet but have not seen in the flesh a single bear in all my trips up.
I'm gonna try to be on the dirt before first light tomorrow and work this certain area that i found some major damage in and 3 good piles of pooh within a 100 yards of the damage..It was all fresh this morning and one was still warm...So close man. ..Hit that until about 9 and I'm done..
Its been fun thanks for all the guys who've been writin and congratulations to those who found success
Anyway saw a couple of ~Stud~ bull elk up there today and a couple more deer.. Got some footage so I'll share the spring early draw photo safari with ya
Capt A. Blanchard I was gonna throw the Kapowsin gate key through the office window today on my way out the gate but your making me give it one try tomorrow...Push that sumbtch out of those trees and i'll do the rest
Thank you for that brother!!
-
Dang that bull run in the second pictures has some long ass eye guards!! Should be a big bull!! Good luck tomorrow Bob!!
-
Thanks Scott-
Yea those bulls where very impressive..I pulled those pics off video clips and to see the size of them moving through the woods etc... That first bull is a 6x6 taken at 100+ yards and elevation..He's a monster..And as i sit here re watching the clip of the 6x6 i wish i would have looked to see what he is keeping his eye on..He was fixed on something for the first 50 secs of the video..Ears at attention and would not look away
I'll givum heck in the morning and let ya know how it goes
Peace brother
-
Great pics Bob W. Best of luck tomorrow!
-
right on Brett best of luck to you too my friend
-
Good luck tomorrow bob! See anything good tomorrow let some of us guys know ;) but notellum and I will take ya up to a honey hole this summer if ya want brotha! Let us all get redemption from our spring let downs lol. Be heading up Friday and Saturday afternoons.... Good luck to all!
-
Good luck bob w.! Dirt nap city,
-
good luck up there boys. i just came in from meat cutting and wrapping.
more than happy to lend a hand getting one out too so keep me in mind
-
Good luck to you Bob.
Here is bear number 9 for me to see this season. It was a little cutie and did the slow backwards walk at about 20' from me when it realized that I was watching it.
I have had chances and had to change rifles to see if maybe I can get the job done. I have had a great time and have seen tons of animals and had fun with many experiences.
I have met many great people up there. And a couple in particular have been outstanding with there support for me, a big thank you to them. It has been a blast!
-
Good luck Bob! I guess you'll be out there a couple more hours. I sure hope you get one. I will be looking forward to a posting. Hopefully not until much later though. With some luck you'll be packing out for quite a while.
-
Maybe it's just me but a few minutes ago I thought I heard the sound of fur being drug across a Fir blowdown, 6-8" diameter and ...yeah, I think it was salal, and a few dandelion sprigs. Was that you Bob W.? Woodman?
I could hear it from my desk in Bellevue so I thought for sure it was one of you dragging out a bruiser! :chuckle:
-
I knew you couldn't think it was me and say it with a straight face (explains this guy :chuckle:) hahahahahaaa
Nah brother it wasn't me..I set up in position this morning at 4:45 a.m. and gave it about 4 hours hoping i would have caught one of those lugs that left some proud piles back on 511 but it wasn't meant to be..
I was full camo'd with even the camo drop cloth over my face and watched two bucks walk down the trail i was set up on get 20 feet from me before they winded me or felt something wasn't right... they turned and walked away but that was pretty cool and would have been deadly had it been a bear.. Perfect travel plan just the wrong animal :bash:
I had a great hunt(s) over the course of the tag. Met some solid people on here (Scottfrick, Woodman, you, fillthefreezer (a.k.a bruin horder) notellumcreek, funster and 2 new guys today from Olympia named Shane and Kyle who were heading in today as i was heading out...45 minutes later after talking like we were old friends even though we had never met they headed in and i was done for the year.
I hunt Coyotes too so if anybody wants to hook up for some dog huntin let me know and we'll grab the Foxpro and go
Headin to Oregon tomorrow best of luck gents (& ladies)
Office had 6 'confirmed' kills tallied as of 11:30 this morning..That is just the tally of those who submitted a harvest card
Peace to all
Bob
-
Woodman - that little guy looks about the size of my boo boo that I tagged on Sunday.
TaylorB and I are heading down tomorrow morning to see about filling his tag and disturbing my wife with the butchering in the garage. :) Is there anyone else heading out tomorrow for the day before end of season?
-
Last day Kapowsin folks - good luck! There's at least one more on the south side...
-
Best of luck guys. I hope someone connects today.
-
Big ass bull seen last night in kapowi
-
Nice bull!! Sure would be cool if they handed out a few more elk permits for in there
-
Ya for sure! That bull still has alot of growing left to do!
-
:yike:
-
Well kapowsin you treated notellum and myself pretty good for not tagging out, we seen alot of elk cute seeing all the little calves run around and all the big bulls were pretty spectacular! We even put god spot and stocks on 2 good size bears that pulled the sneek on us both of them did, but ohwell it was worth the trip may have to possibly give you a try full season here soon! High point of season was seeing that masher bull and our 2 stocks we put on the bears and our low point was just getting in the gate and hearing my tire leak air... Not too bad of a season I would say! To all that we met like woodman an a few others it was great to meet you guys and tht Clyde guy he's not too bad he was pretty cool to us on info and where he's been seeing the mos action. Now we just got to turn our keys in and well we will see what happens next year! To the guys who got there spring bears all over the state congrats! Some dandy bears were posted on here
Not too long till we start back up on these furry critters!
