Title: Marmot sleeping bag question
Post by: elkhunter00 on March 13, 2013, 09:12:26 PM: Ok, I am not new to hunting or hiking, but am new to multiple nights in the backcountry.

I am looking at a Marmot Mystic 30 degree sleeping bag. It is synthetic fill. It is regularly $169 but is on sale for $82. It weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces. I can't find any reviews of it other than what is on Sierra's website.

I will be camping in Western Washington in places like Margaret and the Goat Rocks from June thru October.

My questions: 1) does any body have any experience with this actual bag? 2) Is the bag good for what I am looking for, other than price?

Post by: BenC567 on March 13, 2013, 09:28:47 PM: I would look for a bag that is lighter and rated to at least 15 degrees. I have the Marmot Sawtooth (15 Degrees) and love it. Knowing you have a nice warm bag to crawl into at night is well worth the money.

Post by: 7mag. on March 13, 2013, 09:36:09 PM: That is really heavy for a 30 deg bag. Also, a 30 deg bag isn't warm enough for The Goat Rocks in October. I have a Marmot Trestle 15 deg bag, synthetic fill, and I'm not real impressed. Don't skimp on your bag and pad. A miserable, cold night will ruin a hunt.

Post by: thatkidwho on March 14, 2013, 11:40:23 AM: 30 degrees is almost warm enough. For every 1000 ft of elevation the temp drops 5 degrees. So below 30 is common during the summer at high elevation. I would get 20 bag at a minimum. Fit is also important. If you're short buy a short or women's bag. The less empty space the more efficient the bag will be. Also buy a sleeping pad, buy a high R-Value one.

Its synthetic, is a little over 2 1/2 lbs and slept pretty warm. I still use it but it is my extra bag I leave in my truck know. They are pretty reasonably priced if I remember right. Its been a few years though.

I know I didn't pay over 80 bucks for mine so I'm betting you could shop around and find a decent price. The thing I have found about backpacking gear is for the most part the more you spend the better the gear! I am a slow learner and like to spend lots of extra money on constant upgrades instead of just going all out! :chuckle:

those seem VERY heavy for the price tag. seems you could pick up an 800 fill bag around 2lbs off BPL classified if youre patient for 2-250

Agreed on the first part.

Disagree with the Marmot Trestle 15 review, I am super happy with mine, especially for $115

Post by: BsB on June 19, 2013, 08:40:14 AM: I've been using my Marmot Never Summer down bag in the BC for the last few years in just about every season. Coupled with a gore-tex bivy for wet/snowy treks, I have yet to fully zip the bag up to stay warm. In the summer months a rain fly and thermarest pad do me well. Well worth the price IMO. If you do get a down bag I'd suggest a waterproof compression sack. I can get it to about the size of a cantaloupe and keep it good and dry.

Post by: JustinC on July 04, 2013, 02:40:33 PM: I've had the Marmot Helium for about seven years now and it works awesome. I hardly ever zip it though because it's too warm. The bag is rated at 15* and weighs 2lbs if I remember right.

Like said before, get a good pad or you're wasting your money on a good bag.

I think the Xtherm is the best pad available at this time. Some people don't like them because they are noisy but it hasn't bothered me or the people sleeping near me at all. The BA pad is also very popular but weighs a little more and has a lower R value. :twocents:

Post by: Olympics777 on July 04, 2013, 09:43:18 PM: I use a Ledge bag that is $100, rated to 20degrees and weighs 3pounds 4 ounces. You could probably find a lighter bag for the price, and I would not go over twenty degrees, and ten would be even better.
