Title: Fiance's new elk killer! SHE SCORED!!!
Post by: norsepeak on September 30, 2008, 03:47:27 PM
Thanks to Kirby at APS she has a new elk killer.  It's got a Lilja ss barell w/ painkiller, savage ss left handed action (massaged by APS), McMillian stock, tally rings, Leupold 3-9.  It's very light, VERY accurate and almost no recoil...should be an elk killin machine.  We'll find out in a couple of weeks.  It's chambered in 270 and shoots .35 MOA!  What do you guys think?

Saw the write-up Kirby did on it over on LRH... looks great. I can't believe how much better the Savage action looks without the barrel nut. Sweet rifle...

Looks great! Good cal choice and scope choice. I told my Nephew to get a Leupold scope, any Leupold, and he bought a Sightron. My opinion Sightron's are a POS! :dunno:

I HAD to get her a quality rifle....she drew a big bull tag and a buck tag this year!....now she INFORMS me that WHEN she kills her big bull and her big buck, that my mounts have to go into the office so hers can go in the living room.....I told her the first spike to step out, I was going to say "theres a big one shoot it! shoot it! ha ha)

Josh,
This is the second rifle I've had Kirby build for me, and as far as I can see, he is the best, no doubt, undisputed, king of the hill, top dog.  I couldn't be happier with his customer service, his quality or his just plain knowledge.  If you want the best quality and service check APS!

No doubt... he and Shawn both build great stuff. I have a DE break on my .300 RUM... couldn't be happier. One of those guys will be screwing a .338 EDGE pipe on my Sendero one of these days... just gotta shoot the barrel out first.

haven't personally seen shawn's stuff, but from what I've read and seen pics/vid of it looks like top notch stuff too.  I've heard he is really good to work with as well.

Looks great!
Now get her out there and practice!
Believe me when I tell you, use hearing protection.

I like it. Mind if I ask about the turn around time? Hes the 'smith Im considering for an upcoming build.

Turn around time is loooong, but the quality is worth the wait.  I ordered here rifle the first of Jan. and just got it last week.  So if I were to have something done for next season, I would probably order it pretty soon.  I can't emphasize enough the quality is the finest anywhere in the country.

Addicted, he dont have a website according to his post at LRH. Says if he ever puts one up he'll never get any guns built.

What sage said.  He told me that he is by himself, doesn't want to hire anyone to help because he is a perfectionist and doesn't want the quality to slip with someone else doing the work.  He said if he did any advertising at all he would be so back logged it would take years to get a customer a rifle so he doesn't do any advertising and it still take about 9 months for a custom.....ya gotta wait and pay for quality!

:drool:That is one cool rifle. Great caliber choice also. I'm a lefty too, I thought about a Savage but I chose the Browning A-Bolt 8).

She got to shoot it for the first time yesterday.  After a couple to get used to it, she shot about a 2" group with it...a little more practice this next week and she should be down under a 1".  Good enough to smack a big bull!

final update before elk killing time.  Went out this afternoon and shot at 300yrds.  She was able to shoot a 3 shot group at just over 1 MOA.  That should be more than tight enough to smack a big bull!  Rifle shoots awsome, no recoil and is light and comfortable to pack.  Once my dies show up we will have a load for it and should be able to hold .5 MOA with it.  Thank you Kirby!

Second to the last day that we could hunt, so we decided to take anything with horns after a rookie mistake cost her a very nice big bull a week earlier.  Oh well, we've all been there!  Anyway, we went up high, and right after daylight we were on a ridgetop glassing and I spotted this guy with 5 cows feeding across a canyon at 631 yards.  After deciding it was too far to shoot, (about 1.3 seconds) we came up with a game plan on how to close the distance.  We took off on a death march down to the bottom of the canyon, and up the other side skirting just inside the timber and down wind.  I had to try hard to go slow and help her keep her heart rate down, she was very excited.  When we got up to where they had been feeding, of course they were gone.  So I looked around and found their tracks heading back east into the timber.  So I took off following their tracks while she went over the top of the ridge.  After about 40 yards, I looked through the trees and spotted another meadow up ahead, so I hustled up to hopefully catch them in the meadow.  When I got to the meadow the cows came trotting into the meadow from above with the bull following.  They all stopped in the meadow about 50 yards out.  I was watching the bull wondering where my fiance was when just above me in the trees I hear that magic sound.  Kaboom! I watch and see the bull hunch up and rear up on his back legs.  He took about 3 steps and fell over stone dead.  Her first bull!  Not the trophy we were hoping for, but he'll fill the freezer nicely.  Now off to the mission unit to find a big muley for her.

Congrats NP. I did my best to fix that pic but the brim of her hat hid her face just a little too much to bring it out without it looking bad. You can delete it if you want, just thought you might like to see it a little better.

Load was factory Rem. Core-lokt.  Haven't had time for a hand load yet.  Spent last three days in the mission.  WOW!  What a tag.  About 6 in. of snow up for the first two days, saw 12 bucks, one 30+ 3pt., one very nice clean 4X4, one nice 5pt. and one VERY nice 5x5 that was a definit shooter, but we couldn't find him once we got close enough for a shot.  Today, woke up to 4 inches of wet snow at camp and rained and snowed all day, but we did see three bucks today, one very nice 4pt.  Gotta work the next few days and then back at it next week.
