I am wanting to get a sxs for upland bird hunting. Mainly quail, chukar and a little bit of pheasant.
What brand would you recommend? I honestly know nothing about either one so any input would be helpfull
-
What interests you about these two?....both make some fine guns....just curious how you came up with those two.
-
I was told by a co worker to take a look at a website that specialses in importing older guns and those two brands seem to sell allot on the website and the price is allot better then a new over and under
-
Do you have a link to that website?
The only Merkel which would be reasonably priced would be a #8.
The rest are pretty pricey. :twocents:
-
Do you have a preference on gauge and English vs American style? Early fox sterlingworth and Parker's are always wort a look......if you dig American. A bss is about the toughest SxS besides the win 21.......but the 21 is a pile of scratch.
-
Reasonably priced and side by side......laffin.
-
I would prefer a 12 or a 20 gauge just due to those gauges being more common. I do not have a preference in style due to honestly not knowing a thing about sxs's
-
What kind of budget are you working with?
-
You might add SKB to the mix. Ithaca brought them in for awhile, several grades.

I would like to keep it below $400 but I am not opposed to saving up for a little while also.
I was seeing some Merkel model eights going for $375.
My main thing is that I'm wanting a sxs for upland hunting cause I have looked at the price for over and under shotguns and I'm not willing to dish that kind of money out right now.
Plus old guns have character.
-
you do realize you will have to shoot soft- nontoxic shot and and possibly vintage low pressure out of these, and that limits your options to some very expensive choices: like classic doubles for around $30 for ten shots, or nice shot at $75 for a box of 25. if you are in an area where you can shoot lead you will only need low pressure loads, although they are a lot cheaper than nontox they are tricky to get ahold of in a pinch and unless you reload you will have to get your shells through the mail which might not be an option for long.
-
probably don't need low pressure for the merkel, but steel shot would be a no no.
-
Bismuth works great out of classic doubles:
-
dang look at the forend on that fox!
whats the going rate for bismuth these days? I thought they no longer made shells, and its a reloaders only thing.
you could get a decent Fox 12 gauge for a little more than the husqevarna and merkel. its a great classic american double and its pretty rare to find one that has been shot to death... however always get a competent gunsmith to look over any vintage gun before firing it, there are alot of factors that affect safety

I inherited an over-under Merkel from my dad, who got it at an auction for a fraction of what it was worth back in the late 60s (at least that's what he told my Mom... :chuckle: ). Dad died when I was 8 and when I was a teenager I used to hunt grouse, pheasant, quail and ducks with it. It was a fantastic shooter. After I left home for the Army Mom had it appraised along with a bunch of other stuff for the insurance company. We were offered $5,000 for it by the appraiser in 1990. I cringe now when I think of the places I took that gun when I was 16 and 17 :o
I have nevery seen a Husquavarna shotgun, but I had a Husky 270 that I hunted with for years and it was a great little reliable shooter.
Knowing what my rifle was worth, and knowing what our Merkel is worth I can't imagine they are in the same price class...
I have the Merkel now, but I only shoot it at the range.

If your seeing Merkel #8s for anywhere near $400, you shouldn't be passing those up!! The last Merkel I bought was a low end gun and I stole it at $2500
-
I was thinking the same thing.....perhaps mirokou for 400.
-
I just got a reloader for doing shotgun shells so that wouldn't be a problem but I'm sure bismuth shot is expensive.
I am sure it's a Merkel grade 8. A co worker found a website that is selling firearms that are being imported from Sweden at really low prices so that's part of the reason I have been looking at the sxs's
-
Please post the web link; I'll by 2 or 3 Merkel's for that price.
-
I will as soon as I buy one first :chuckle:

Something don't jibe.....those prices are from 1970!

Reading the descriptions, those Merkels sound kinda beat. I really clean #8 is only a 1K gun.

A few that I saw mostly had a broken stock. Looked like metal was in good shape.

I saw a lot of 80% blue, they sound like a decent deal, but not good enough.

My dad has several Merkels. He likes the SxS. I shoot like crap with them. Not sure why as I shoot O/U and everything else very well. The SxS have my number. Nice guns though and great wood on them. I think he has about $4k and more into each one. One of them a lot more.
I would go with a Holland and Holland personally. :yike:
-
Or a purdey......better bring $350
GRAND!

Thats a set, so really its only 175K ;)
-
that website looks like a great place to buy a big steaming hunk of crap to hang on the wall. or you could call it a fixer upper project and sink two or three grand into it to get functional.
guns are investments. do you want to make a good investment by waiting and saving some money on a gun actually worth something or a broke down pile a crap you might get a season or two out of at best?
if you could inspect them in person that would be one thing, but your at the mercy of the person trying to sell you something... from sweden? Run away.
not to mention the price goes up with FFL, shipping, and Wa state sales tax.

I agree, a friend of mine has offered to sell me his cz ringneck that has less then a box of shells through it.
I am going to try it out before buying it but being able to shoot steel through it and being able to change the chokes is going to be a far better option.
Thank you for taking a look!
-
can't go wrong with a CZ.
I might recommend considering a bobwhite model over a Ringneck. the bobwhite you can find used much closer to your price range. they also have dual mechanical triggers whereas the ring neck has only one single selective inertia trigger. the dual mechanical are MUCH more more reliable than the single selective making the bobwhite a tremendous value.
although both are really good guns for the money and I am splitting hairs, I feel the bobwhite is a good spartan gun for the money while in the ringneck most of the price difference comes from better aesthetics (fake ass sideplates) and single selective trigger which many believe to be an upgrade - but any real SxS enthusiast, upland bird hunter knows double triggers are far superior and usually trouble free.
-

and you can pull them both at the same time. :yike:

or if you get a single selective sometimes you only need to pull the one trigger for both barrels to go off at the same time :yike:
I had an aya that would double sometimes, it really packed a wallup.
-
I am pretty sure my ring neck is mechanical reset....I have had two, this one has the beretta style safety vs the ruger style. If you need one, I have one in 20ga that I would sell for a fair price, but not a give away.
-
I am pretty sure my ring neck is mechanical reset....
did a quick search and your right it does have a mechanical trigger, I might have to give a little more thought to ringneck in the future, although I hate side plates and love english grips.
so it all boils down to aesthetics and trigger preference. once you go double trigger you will never go back. much easier and faster to choose barrels on the fly.
two triggers and interchangeable chokes make for the swiss army knife of upland guns. :twocents:
-
I have plenty of both, I just like SxS guns....lol
-
Husqvarnas are pretty solid guns, I duck hunt with a Model 51 with ITX and Nice Shot handloads. Merkels or Simsons on a Merkel frame can b e great guns but will need soft non-toxics for waterfowl and will mostlikely be manditory for all upland hunting in the future.
I don't know who you are looking at but most of these imports coming in are well used guns and reading the descriptions there are alot of them that need workd barrel dents and dings cracked stocks and worn finish. Most of them are choked full and full and will need the chokes openned, Mike Orlen did mine at $55. / barrel. If you decide to go that route read everything carefully. Blackwell seems to have a little higher grade guns than Simpsons.
I just picked up a V. Bernedelli XXV off of gun broker for less than 1K and it is nearly new condition, 12ga SxS, English grip, choked IC/IM at 5 Lb 15 oz, it should be a great upland gun.

wow, heck of a deal on a nice gun
does it have a churchill rib and if so are you going to shoot it churchill style? I had any aya XXV and actually learned to shoot it the correct way, it was a lot of fun and I can't remember why I ever sold it.
-
12 guage bobwhite used on the rack at kesselrings today for 650 and it looked to be in excellent condition.
-
Buds has new 12ga Bobwhites fro $569 and free shipping.
-
But what about the goveners share on the chicken ..... sales tax? and the paperwork fee? The federal police supply here in ferndale is the cheapest on the paperwork part,I know that for a fact.

-
It has to be shipped to an FFL holder in WA so you'll pay the same percent sales tax. I don't know what you pay but it cost me $20. for transactions from the dealer I use. So the cost would be $569.+$20.+tax for a new gun compared to Kesslrings $650+tax if they don't charge you an ID check for a used one.
