Title: Maui Hunt May
Post by: klikboom on March 18, 2013, 12:45:12 PM
I'm planning on hunting the island of Lanai in early May. I'm trying to arrange it possibly with a guide, possibly DIY with a private land pass. I'd love to take a ram but will probably be hunting Axis deer. Anyone have recent experience there? I'm still up the air with bow / rifle. I've only taken this past years deer with a bow, but many deer with .308. I'm thinking due to the landscape (open) my chances would be far higher with a rifle. The gun laws there are a little strange but I think it just involves a check-in with the local PD. Tips / tricks?

Are these animals real familiar with humans ie not skittish or are they hunted hard and thus jumpy? Seems that with a year round season and open landscape without a blind archery would be pretty low chances.

I did not hunt but this is from a few years ago it was really steep. I was supprised that the hunting areas seemed to be really well marked, there were signs on the side of the road up on the mountain.

oops this was from Waimea Canyon, Kauai

Klikboom, hey brother I just sent you a PM with my number in it. I can give you all the information that you need to know to hunt Lanai. My wife and I did a private hunt for Axis Deer, a public land hunt for both Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep last year; all of which turned out well for us. We will be heading over there in a few weekends (April 6th & 7th) for the public land Axis Deer hunt. I can give you the options and get you linked up with the guides over there. Just give me a call. Scott

My wife was offered a executive position with the Parker Ranch Group in the islands last year, looked to be a lot of hunting on their holdings.

They have a large ranch on the Big Island where I go but most of their hunting is for birds there.

Awesome place. I've driven through their ranch on the big island a couple times. Lots of different upland type hunting, and they have pigs and goats. They also hunt wild cattle. Dunno...

They have planted Black tail in Waimea Canyon, Kauai. I talked to some deer hunters by one of the military radio stations on the way up the canyon.

I hunted with Rodney Pierra 6-7 years ago on maui, great dude, awesome hunt, lotsa critters, awesome property. Killed a 30'' goat and a good axis buck. As far as shootin irons, I used his. Check him out, www.mauihuntingsafari.com (http://www.mauihuntingsafari.com)

How much did the hunt run you? I'm heading tho Maui at the end of May and I am pondering going hunting while I'm there. How did you get your antlers, cape and meat home?

I hunted with Pat Fisher of Hawaii Safari's while getting Married on Maui last September. I highly recommend him. Give him a call and he will answer all your questions. Great customer service.

Amazing is all I can say. The ram is about 30 3/8, not a huge axis but good enough. It was a head shot so I'm just skull plate mounting the axis like the locals do.

Nice! Did you hunt with an outfitter?

I didn't hunt with an outfitter, but had some friends who hunt there often guide me. I am just shocked at the amount of wildlife that island sustains. Must be the minerals in the soil how hey can all grow horns so high. This buck seemed to be rutting by the neck and smell. The ram didn't have any stink.

I used my new 130gr barnes TSX loaded for my 308 and it is a killer round for deer.

A friend of mine just sent me a picture of his son with his Axis yesterday. He got this at Molokia, Hawaii with 11 other people.

Great photos, I have a past hunter (friend now) who hunts year around, I forget which island he lives on, but he loves living there. It sounds like I need to take him up on his invite.

I forgot to mention, as far as horns and meat, I Carried all the meat back to maui with me and butchered it up last night. I'm going to check the meat in a cooler for the plane ride back and I am paying a local taxidermist to clean the skulls / plate for euro mounts and he's shipping them for me.
