My son and I scouted East of Goldendale last weekend. We saw tons of birds on the Centerville Hwy on the drive over. I've looked but don't see any public area in Centerville. Any suggestions?
-
Start calling landowners and beating on doors. Most of the best turkey hunting in the state is on pvt land.
-
:yeah:
You have a great in ... your son. If you get permission, remember a thank you gift ... doesn't have to be much, maybe some elk meat, deer meat, some fish, a gift certificate to a local restuarant, Home Depot, etc. or a bottle of his favorite beverage. Just saying that will probably get you a friend and -place to hunt for life ....
:twocents:

I agree with Turkeydancer on some kind of a small gift. Last time my son got a bird we took a picture of it and then made a neat thank you card at Bartell's for a couple of bucks using a picture of my son with his bird on the guys property. Then threw in a gift card. I also have my son write his own thank you letter. One guy that I visit just wants trash picked up on his property so I always take a garbage bag and do what I can if there are any pop cans or litter that people have left.

Theres a nice piece of public land on the centerville hwy, just above Lyle. About 2 or 3 miles up the hill. Tons of birds there. Even though there are sometimes more than a few people there. I have never had trouble getting birds there.
-
There is that state land on the flat that has birds. Like someone mentioned its about 2.25 miles out of Lyle. The areas that have turkeys east of Goldendale is mostly private and you are less likely getting permission. If you need some pointers in the area let me know and I might be able to send you in the right direction.
-
If you want to hunt Gdale, holler at me and break out your Topo map.
-
I too would recommend north of Goldendale.
-
Youth weekend on centerville road last year was decent. The next weekend you couldn't buy a parking spot. Money in monument though. Also down klickitat grade from g-dale.
Probably taking my boy to monumnet, we are from Yakima area.
-
I love this site! No where else can a novice turkey hunter throw on post and get solid info back from such an experienced group. I would appreciate any and all pointers.
-
Just make sure you don't drive behind any gates but feel free to walk in when it comes to the WPT land and stay off all timber company land east of 97.
-
:yeah:
Like said the flats on the west side of gdale can be great for the youth season. It's a mess during the general season until late when the birds are very educated and a lot have been moved out of the area. There is birds to be found on the wpt ground on the north west side of goldendale. The east side is very iffy now days and if a guy gets into the wrong for any reason you will get a nasty fine and tresspassing now days why hunting is a felony and you can lose your gun rights. Much better to stay on the safe side with your boy and hunt the west side of 97. There is still a good amount of private land but with a gps you will have no problem staying off of it.
-
I was given permission to hunt property off of Box Canyon Rd. They said they've seen Turkey when Deer hunting, but have never actually hunted Turkey there. That's NE of Gdale so not sure if we'll have much luck. I'll check out the public area off the West Side of 97.
-
There are turkeys on Box Canyon but once again you need to know where your at up there and to make sure you don't end up on timber land.
-
Got it! When you say West of Gdale are you talking Soda Springs area?
-
I guess it would be more northwest of Goldendale on the timber land. If you have a place that is private on Box Canyon you could have success up there. Like I said just know where your at up there. Will you be camping up there?
-
I have seen many more birds off of Jenkns rd on WPT than on bx cnyn rd, but I don't normally drive more than half way out bx cnyn rd, but I do drive it on a daily basis.

The farther out you go the more turkeys there are. The problem with that once your out there a ways you run into the closed timber land. I would agree on the Jenkins Creek Rd.
-
There's a gate at the end of Box Canyon Rd 15-20 min east of the fire station that I was told us walk in hunting. I'll be camping on a friends property but the area was wiped out from the fire and the person who owns the land has only seen turkeys twice on his property. Just going to be using it as a base camp then travel from there for the weekend.
-
There is some BLM or state land at the gate. That's the only public land on Box Canyon and you probably won't be alone. There are birds in the area though.
-
We're going to spend all day the 1st -2nd scouting areas so hoping to find a couple of spots to get after'em.
-
Curious how far out bx cnynyour friends property is? I live in the area
-
:chuckle: My wifes parents "divorced" both live there in 2 separate houses and long time family friend lives there. How many people live on that road :chuckle: :chuckle: Use to be about 5 houses out there now there must be 50 :chuckle:

BigD I may have you figured out. Are you a city employee?
-
Haha, now that's funny, I know who you are talking about. I have a stick built house cedar sided house with the big lawn, you can't miss it. And I work at the end of industrial way, remember?
-
His property is South of Box Canyon off McNichols. How far is Jenkins Creek Rd to Box Canyon Rd?
-
Just south of Box Canyon off of the west side of 97. Right across from Three Creeks.
-
I can see Mc Nichols road from from my place. You have to pass it to get there. I can hear turkeys back in there and have had them on my place but have not heard or seen any for awhile, like last fall. Shoot me a pm before you come up and if I'm not working I can try and show you around a bit.
Deerslayer you should be able to figure it out real easy now!
-
If you are who I think you might be I am not sure if you can see McNichols or not. If you don't work for the city I am clueless.
-
That would be great! I'll send you a PM, and look forward to any info/advice.
-
Should be an easy one for you. Big lawn cedar house going to Mc nichols. My guess is you have driven past it, see you guys out here every now and again, just not at my place.
-

No problem
-
I know the house. Obviously you have figured out me somehow.
-
Is it a awesome fenced in place on a corner?
-
Ding ding ding. You forget you pm'd me a few times.

Really??? Memory is shot. I love your place. If I'm not mistaken at one point you had a nice black lab. I need a yard like yours. Sorry for stealing the topic but I did send some good info via PM.
-
No problem. That's half the fun meeting and finding people. Appreciate all of the info that you guys have provided! Looking forward to a great season!
-
BigD can you send me a PM? For some reason I can't send them out.
