A buddy sent me a pic yesterday of a springer he got so I grabbed my gear and ran to the river to meet him and give it a try and right before dark my pole got hammered and I landed this 17 pounder. My first one of the year and theres nothing like that first springer. The one my buddy got was also 17 pounds. Cant wait to go do it all over again :IBCOOL:

Thee smelt have been thick for about a week now and in the last two days the river has came up about 3 feet atleast so things should start to get better. The lower river below the toutle is pretty ugly so I would try up high. Thats where I was last night. Im going out again today after work to give it another try
-
Nice work! I have neen blanked on 3 attempts so far this year. 1 bank day on the Cow and 2 boat days on the big river. The early bite has been slow so far. Hope things are turning around! Good luck the rest of the season.
-
Ya its been pretty slow ive been out every weekend for the last several weeks and ive only seen one other springer caught and a few stealhead. Good luck to you too

Even the reports say people are nailing steelies in the cowlitz, Its slowing down but they are forsure there. I want some silvers! Nomnomnom
-
The Cow is a ghost town for steelies. Even Clancy and Ron Holt have cancelled there trips as of this week.
Slowing down? Its not even near the peak. Some are trickling in but its far from good. And far from were we should be by now.
The numbers are way down from years past and were it should be for this B run. They released over 500000 smolts but there not here.
Im not saying dont go. A slow day fishing is better than a good day at work. But fishing is severely slow overall for either run. Period!
And the Big C is no where near a bloodbath. Here is Mondays reports from the Oregonian...
Here's a Monday afternoon update regarding spring chinook in the lower Columbia:
Test netting — There were 16 drifts made on Sunday in the Wahkiakum and Cowlitz portions of the river with a catch of three spring chinook and eight steelhead.
Two of the chinook were lower Columbia-origin salmon, while one was headed for upstream of Bonneville. One of the three fish was wild. Among the eight steelhead, five were hatchery and three were wild.
This is not the ratio of chinook to steelhead that state managers like to see prior to a commercial fishery and the chinook per drift is — obviously — very low.
Dam count — Twenty-two adult spring chinook were counted Friday at Bonneville. That was the first double-digit day this year. The cumulative count through Friday is 68 adult spring chinook and one jack.
Sport fishing — Washington sampled 2,348 anglers with 82 adult chinook and one jack, which is a fish per 28 trips. All but one chinook came from boaters. Seventy-six percent of the catch were fish headed for upstream of Bonneville.
In the estuary, 123 boaters were sampled with 13 chinook kept and two released. Between Warrior Rock and Kelley Point, the numbers were 293 boaters with 11 chinook kept and four released. Between Davis Bar and Portland airport tower, there were 550 anglers sampled with 21 chinook kept and two released.

I didnt say it was over, I just said it was slowing down i.e. meaning not that many fish are being caught. lol
Thanks for all the official stuff though. Whens is they're estimated "peak"?

Im saying it never got good yet. You do realise there are 2 runs? It was ok to pretty good for the A run. (smaller, earlier fish.
And now we are waiting on a B run of Big fish. Which should have started showing and building strong 3 to 4 weeks ago but hasent.

i caught 15-17 wild one on the big river and lost a toad on the cowlitz...prolly fished for a total of 9 hours
wont catch em at home...
btw smossy an kc, good luck getting a spot on the cowlitz,it seems fishing is very popular this year
-
Cleaned this one up. If there's some sort of gamefishin.com rivalry or drama spewing over onto here between a few of you, I'd suggest leaving it on gamefishin.com.
I guess you can call that fair warning. Leave it off of here.
You know who you are.

Yeah cowlitz is packed almost everytime Ive went down there. When I cant find a spot me and my girl usually will walk around and pick up garbage. Hate it when Im tripping over friggen braided line all day. I fell in the river at the carbon one time because of that crap. Floated down alittle way, Good thing my buddy snatched me up by the straps on my waders or It could of been bad.

Heading down to the Columbia sunday.. Still trying to decide weather to hit up around the I5 bridge or down near skamokawa? :dunno: Hopefully this rain will get em moving :bash:
-
Saw 1 boat around I-5 today... Ghosttown
-
Well I went back out last night tthe river had dropped again and the only action I had was about a 5 pound sucker fish. Even the guys who had been there all day said they never seen a take down all day. And no smossy we werent using cork and yarn. Ive been just running a spin glo with a prawn or sandshrimp and then slidding down a cut plug herring its worked really well for me the last couple years I usually average 12-16 fish a year wiith that setup.
-
Some of you guys may know the guy i fish with, if you are on gamefishin or ifish he goes by Born To Be Wild, he has been banned on most of the sites he frequents because he is passionate about the fish and fishing and he rarely will see the other side of the argument and ends up getting himself banned. But he has been one of the most helpful people when it come to fishing on the river. He has been giving me reports of no fish. Or 1 fish, it has been very slow. He lives on the river so i wait until he calls me and all he is saying is slow. And he fishes the Cow a lot.

Ahh ok. I havent mastered all those fancy setups yet. Ive barely got bobber and egg teq- down.

The interesting thing about the Internet fishermen is that usually the majority of people who post reports are the ones who caught fish. I know plenty of guys who wouldn't go on a forum and let everyone know they got skunked or had a slow day. When there are loads of people fishing, of course you're goin to get reports of people catching fish, but if you look at actual catch rates... It's usually a different story.
Smossy, my usual crew has me full for most of the halibut season, and with a good spring bear tag in my pocket I'm going to sit some of the openers out.

I'm the opposite. I am much more likely to go on the interwebz and tell people fishing sucks than I am to post a hot report.
-
As am I, its much more helpful than the guys just getting on there to brag.

And it won't create a swarm of fishermen in your honey holes.

By all means I wasnt really posting that pic to bragg I was just excited to get that first one of the year under my belt. The fishing on the cowlitz has been very slow and I put in a lot of hours the last couple weeks and the most I seen was 3 steelies in one day so it is definately far from being hot right now

BTBW  ya for years hes been a wealth of knowledge, but yes your right he tends to get into alot of spats, especially with anyone that fishes the cow, wasnt it CFM he fought with daily? I didnt even know he was banned til about a week ago :sry:
its not just this thread, I have seen this fight about the catch rate going on all over :bash:
-
Yeah KC he has been a fishing buddy for a lot of years. He helped me get my boy his first steelhead when my boy was 6. BRBW is very good with kids. I get pics from Dan all the time. Every day he catches fish. So i usually know where the fish are around the SW WA area.

The cow isn't somewhere that I feel the need to keep secret. It is well known and busy whenever there are fish around in numbers.
-
Nice springers right there. I'd take one of those over 5 steelhead any day. Good going.

hey Mark! yes i agree, i like steel but will quickly trade steel for salmon, and have done it too, use to trade with the old member "Olaf" occasionally :chuckle: BTW the foster daughter is still lovin that rod you gave her, shes used it well, for 2 seasons now going on 3, matter of fact she just re-spooled the reel on it and got it all cleaned out and re-greased and ready for this season, many thanks again brother
-
Youre welcome!. Glad she's getting some use out of it. With pinks right around the corner i imagine it'll get alot of use in a couple months!.
-
oh yes shes fired up :yeah:
