Title: diy bear maps
Post by: jason stevens on March 26, 2013, 03:22:49 PM: Im a rookie to bear hunting and have never killed one. I have been hunting a long time and was wondering if anyone has purchased a map from bearpaw. Thinking about doing it wife wants a rug.any thoughts on the map cant afford a full guided hunt but. Dont know anyone that bear hunts unless someone wants to show me the ropes.hoping for snohomish county or within 100 miles from snohomish. Thanks for reading

You're in a great area for bear hunting though, so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get one if you put in the time.

Post by: Machias on March 26, 2013, 04:22:24 PM: One thing, go souting a couple of weekends and you've already spent more than Dale's maps in gas alone. They are well worth the money, just in saved gas.

you have the right idea when you are seeing fresh sign, keep after it! try early morning late in the evening preferably where you have a good vantage point to glass from

:yeah: you will most likely hear a lot more bear than you will actually see. just stay patient and persistent. im still hoping for my first bear too.

That is certainly all you have to do to get started. Focus on an area once you find a concentration of bears (blackberries and poo). After you find the bears it is simply a matter of time in the woods.

Also if you find good sign in a particular cut give it some time, if they find a good food source they will keep coming back to it. My next best advice would be to get out of your car before light and leave the woods after dark. I see more bears the first half hour of shooting light in the morning and the last half hour at night. :twocents:

Post by: troyspinetar on April 09, 2013, 07:35:55 PM: I am no expert. Last summer we scouted and found lots of bear sign. My buddy hunted logging roads the first couple months and saw 3 bears, he got shots off on one and missed, but later bagged one. We went up high in the wilderness country (south facing slopes) and I got my first. A couple weeks later while deer hunting behind closed gates, I ran into another small bear about 30 yds out but opted not to shoot (2nd tag).
All in all I found it somewhat straight forward if you do some scouting and are willing to get out on foot or mtn bike.
