Title: Hirshey and Eyeguard Idaho 2012
Post by: hirshey on April 02, 2013, 03:50:22 PM
Well, I’ve been putting this off but figured it was time to chronicle the Idaho hunt Eyeguard and I went on this past season.

As some of you may know, Eyeguard and I called it quits as a couple after almost 6 years of dating this last summer. We had planned a mule deer hunt prior to our split with a friend and were on good enough terms to carry loaded weapons around each other, so decided to continue with our established plan: ten days in the wilderness stalking big bucks. We arrived at our destination in the pristine wilderness with enough time to set up a base camp, pack our bivvy gear and gain a few miles and a couple thousand feet of elevation before nightfall.

Just at dusk, we saw our first good buck of the trip; an impressive typical four point we would never catch up to again. Under the beautiful moon we cooked dinner and waited for the rosy glow from the east marking all the optimism and hope a hunter could ask for. The next morning, the three of us canvassed the basin and surrounding hills for Mr. Big from the night prior to no avail. At noon, we packed our camp and headed for higher ground and rumors of a spring further up the mountain. With water running low, we were elated to find a source precisely where it was promised.

The next few days were spent at high elevations with very few deer sightings... it appeared the bucks had answered the call of the rut and were chasing does much lower in elevation. We decided to drop back down the mountain, regroup at base camp and try a different hill.

That night, I started losing the battle to a cold that slowly crept into my sinuses and lungs; the crisp air that had seemed so welcoming other days felt like broken glass to my agitated respiratory system. When we arrived back at base camp, I took the morning off of hunting in hopes to get the upper hand on my illness. The boys headed to the hills, and amongst the fog and snow flurries, Eyeguard spotted a buck worthy of a bullet; a non-typical 5x5 field judged at roughly 27 inches wide. He made an excellent shot on the animal and the 5 mile pack out ensued.

Meanwhile, after a few more hours of sleep I couldn’t stand it; it simply wouldn’t do to dream about big bucks when I was surrounded by opportunity to find one, so I took to the hills at about 9 AM. After 3 hours of hiking I spotted a group of does being worked by a buck a few miles off… I couldn’t tell just how nice this buck was but the horns looked impressive from that distance, so I moved in to roughly half a mile and put my spotting scope on him. Instantly my heart rate increased as my jaw went slack… THIS was the buck I had been looking for, and I would do anything to have an opportunity at him; he was a non-typical 5x5 with a heavy frame and plenty of stickers, giving him all the character that I could ever have wished for. I packed up the spotting scope, designed a route that would get me roughly a 150 yard shot, and took to the stalk. A cold wind started pushing at my back… I looked behind me to see a wall of snow approaching, so I quickened my pace… (one of many mistakes!) I worked past 4 of my buck’s does to conceal myself in a small subdraw… I was only maybe 300 yards from the buck of my lifetime… I started slowly climbing the ridge, my end goal in sight; a small clump of sage that would provide me with the perfect shot. But alas! A small 2x3 buck worked over the hill and busted me! He ran back over the ridgeline and spooked all the animals peacefully milling about below. I made quick work of the remainder of the hill already feeling defeat; the snow was falling in heavy clumps and my buck was working up the other side of a large draw. With no way to properly gauge the distance except the sight picture in my scope, I pulled up feeling surprised that the animal seemed to be within my comfort range. I fired and the buck stayed broadside, uninjured, seemingly mocking me. The snow was dropping in heavy, and with absolutely no feedback on where my bullet was hitting I had to let the buck walk out of my life. Wondering if it was my gun or just too far of a distance, with a sickening feeling I took the walk of shame back to camp, ensured my rifle was shooting true and hiked up to help Eyeguard with his deer. The next day, Eyeguard and I went back to the same basin. Not surprisingly, my big old boy was nowhere to be found. Eyeguard spotted a very respectable 4x4 with a reasonable stalk, so I decided to move on him. At 200 yards, I sat over Jarred’s knees on a steep slope and put him to sleep in his bed.

We made quick work of caping and boning out my trophy, got back to base camp and celebrated with whiskey in a hot spring. Life was rough! We made some fabulous friends and helped another gentleman tag out with a very nice buck as well. The views were amazing, the friendships are long-lasting, and the memories are forever.

Now Charlie’s Taxidermy is doing Eyeguard’s shoulder mount and my European mount. It’ll be worth the wait!

Heard them one night and saw old scat.. Nothing to shoot at. This next fall I'm going to tag out on an Idaho wolf. I'm putting in the time to make it happen. My mom might join me on the high hunt this year. :)

I asked because in some pics she looks 5'8" and in some she looks 5'2".  And I asked for more pics because she impresses the hell out of me.  I couldn't carry half the stuff in her pack let alone hike where she does with it.  Those pics impress me.

Unsure why such a harsh answer, you could say south or north Idaho instead of being a bitter Betty.

I live and Hunt in Idaho so I know the area you all shot those deer in, the river pic gives it away...

More than that gives it away. Do people not understand that fight club rules apply to hunting spots even if you don't plan to hunt it again? It is respect for the other people that do hunt it and put in the effort to find and learn the spot. Threads like this should remind people why the wives and G/f's are left at home. Little boys fighting over stupid little things.
She had a nice trip and good time. She shared it as is her right.
80 - 90 % of the guys on here will never get around to a hunt like that.
Less than that even know where it was. Knowing and doing are way far apart.
If you are so worried about giving up a spot ,hunt alone and stay off the Internet.

Women are the future of hunting and most on here would rather hear her hunting stories than your complaint. Leave this perfect thread alone .

Eye guard your post makes you sound like a good hunter and a poor loser.
Man up. Don't pick on the ladies.

People that try to go the exact location others hunt only discourage me from sharing my adventures, not my desire or ability to return to those spots. If someone on here would purposefully put themselves in close proximity to us that only reflects badly on the content of their character and lack of ability to do their own homework. I suppose I share vague details of my adventures in good faith; assuming most other hunters in the backcountry are similar minded to me and don't desire to see anyone else when they pack in that distance.

Absolutely no need to let some internet rudeness get me down.

Eyeguard was trying to play bad cop so I didn't have to... although he could have been more polite about it or let me tell them it was on Buck Mountain, he was just trying to ensure I didn't narrow the field too greatly on an area he also hopes to continue to hunt.

Again, I would think the kind of caliber of person hoping to hunt those types of areas wouldn't want to stack up right behind someone who also has had success in those areas.

There are already a lot of people in the backcountry; we saw plenty... and people who have been hunting certain hillsides and basins for three generations. If someone expects to go up into the hills and A) be alone or B) be rude and step on people's toes they will not have a good experience in those areas and probably not a very successful hunt anyways. Being respectful of fellow hunters and doing your homework is really the only way to hunt those kinds of areas. We helped other hunters out, but they returned the kindness in other ways.. ways you may not anticipate but could mean the difference to your hunting experience. For example, we had VERY basic food items because we had no horses or outfitter or any means to live any other way... when I got sick, another hunting camp provided me with some delicious homemade chicken soup; an elevated level of nutrition that helped me get on top of my cold and back to the hunt.

Anyways, that's the last I'll say on the topic seeing as I'm in Lander WY taking a month-long wilderness EMT course.

I back country hunted Idaho for 14 years in a row. A brutal hunt every year but we were rewarded with good bucks. I told several people about the area but most weren't willing to put forth the effort. We had a few come with us one year but weren't willing to put forth the effort two years in a row. For the most part its the same die hards you see in there year after year. I highly doubt you'll see any more traffic to your area.
Good job on getting it done! Glad to see a woman with the drive to want to do it on her own. A rare breed in the hunting world. Getting to be more popular though, which is a good thing.

Hirshey and Eyeguard,

I think it says a lot about both of you for being friends enough to hang in there so that you both get to experience such a rewarding hunt!! Way to go...

Congrats to both of you for putting your boots to the ground and getting it done in some very rugged country. Not much more rewarding than "earning" your opportunities with good old fashioned hard work. I really enjoy reading your stories and looking at the pictures. The river pic brings me right back to numb legs and rutting bucks. I myself have hunted that wilderness off and on for the last 12 years. Its one of my favorite hunts.....I think because of the plane rides and AWESOME country.

How did your Icon pack workout for you on this trip? I like mine for archery hunting but like to be able to hang my rifle on my external frame so my hands are freed up so it sits at home on my backcountry rifle hunts.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all!! Take care.....

JT

Sorry, I haven't been able to respond due to being immersed in EMT training over here in Wyoming.

Thanks all...

The Icon worked nicely for me; it has better adjustment in the shoulders for me than most other hunting-specific packs I've tried... and as a girl with narrow shoulders that is KEY when carrying around large loads. I will throw it out there that when hunting I don't mind slinging the rifle over my shoulder and when I'm hiking to a camp site I'm not anticipating shooting at a deer on the move so generally the rifle is attached via some of the webbing. It works well for me because part of the enjoyment of the hunt for me involves the spot and stalk.. I'm sure some folks that still-hunt or are more comfortable with moving shots would find my setup undesireable. I'm sure I could put a scabbard on there somehow but I'm just not interested. Perhaps when Mr. Big runs right past me someday I'll reconsider. ;)

It was a fabulous hunt with great company.. I'm very fortunate to still have Eyeguard as a friend and hunting partner.
