New legislation is forcing gun manufacturing company Beretta to uproot and take their business elsewhere.
Established in 1526, Beretta holds the distinction of being the oldest active firearms manufacturer in the world. The U.S. factory is located in Accokeek, Maryland, and has been a staple of the local economy for years.
Beretta warned that stricter gun control laws would push the company outside of state lines, but that didn’t stop Maryland legislators. Jeffrey Reh, a spokesman for Beretta who also serves as the President of Stoeger Industries under Beretta, announced that the company would begrudgingly uproot and take its business elsewhere. He said, “We don’t want to do this, we’re not willing to do this, but obviously this legislation has caused us a serious level of concern within our company.”
He added that Beretta paid approximately $31 million in taxes, employs 400 people, and had invested $73 million in the business over the past several decades. Despite being such a prominent player in the local economy, Beretta was unable to prevent legislators from passing tighter gun control laws. Ironically, Beretta manufactures some firearms that are now banned in Maryland.
Republican state Delegate Anthony J. O’Donnell lamented: “Losing [Beretta] would be a big disappointment. Maryland has a reputation for having a horrible business climate, and this would be one more nail in the coffin.”
Legislators had ample warning. Back in the ‘90s, when Maryland beefed up gun control laws, Beretta moved one of its warehouses a short drive away to Virginia.
Beretta’s bold move is regrettable but understandable. Reh told reporters, “Why expand in a place where the people who built the gun couldn’t buy it?”
All of Beretta’s pleas fell on deaf ears. Even as Reh lamented Beretta’s looming departure and emphasized the company’s centrality in the local economy during the hearing, Maryland legislators grilled Reh on self-defense.
One legislator stated: “Other than target shooting, the only other reason [for a semi-automic firearm] would be for self-defense… [Why would you need a] rifle that accommodates 20 rounds semi-automatic for deer hunting? … It’s only very infrequently that someone commits a crime with an assault weapon – why do you need one for self-defense?”

Anyone else here remember those wonderful days before the PC monster was hatched when Gus, Jack, Freddy, J.J., Dennis and the team Beat the Washington (formerly Baltimore) BULLETS to win the '79 NBA title? Now the wiz :pee: :pee:zards. Does that state have any idea of it's history?

I wish Beretta would move to Washington, but our legislature is filled with the same kind of [....] that occupy seats in the Maryland legislature. I hope we can remove most, if not all, of these people that don't care about our rights or freedoms.

Berretta would be crazy to move here. The liberals can't even see that we are close to losing Boeing, because of the anti-
business climate here... I don't blame any business for not wanting to move to a State stupid enough to elect Jay Inslee for Governor! :bash:

I'm actually surprised that Beretta isn't going to TX or MT to make sure it doesn't have to go through this again in a few years. VA supports the Beltway crowd and is becoming more liberal each year with Fairfax Co. and Alexandria. Richmond is starting to liberalize, as well.
WA will follow suit soon enough with gun control. We've only been given a breather and it'll start again because of the I-5 corridor and its liberal idiots, heavily financially supported by organized labor, labor that will ironically lose many of their jobs when companies like Boeing leave due to failing liberal economic policies.

The article said that they moved their warehouses to VA back in the 90's but does not say where they will be moving to. I googled the topic but can not find anything from Beretta that they actually said they are moving. Does anyone have another link to back up this article?
If it is true, I am glad Beretta backed up their threats. Idaho will welcome them.

Any word on what Remington and others are doing?
-
I gave them positive feedback on their Facebook page. Im going to go find a Beretta ball cap!
Another poster mentioned Boeing leaving too. I just read an article Boeing is investing $1B and 2000 new jobs in South Carolina.

Love my Beretta's, glad to see them taking a stand.

I have no inside info, just a hunch that Boeing is waiting for one last shoe to fall. The officials were not happy back when they saw Governor Gregoire walking the picket lines with the strikers last time. They said then, that Washington was not a Business-friendly State!

Its amazing that the legislation of one of the 13 original colonies cant understand "why you would need one for self defense?" If our forfathers were this stupid we wouldn't even have a country to "fix".

You mean the same organized labor that keeps local and state economies a float? The same union workers who dedicate goods and services to people in difficult situations perhaps due to no fault of their own.
The same union workers who provide the best skilled work force in America bar none..The same union worker who sometimes is asked to sacrifice for the good of fellow workers to ensure better wages and benefits for future generations (perhaps maybe even your own kid). The same union guys like myself and lots of buddies who book hunts with people on this site and else where to help this industry..Yea i guess your right when you look at it....... Union workers are the root of all evil who do nothing good but suckle on the teets of big industry and chase corporations outta of town. That's a crock dude and if you believe that you should leave town with them.
Not everybody is going to see things the same way, think the same way, vote the same or even share the same religious beliefs but that's the beauty of the place we live. You have your thoughts and ideas and i have mine but you won't catch me on here pontificating how everybody who doesn't share my ideals is an idiot..
Please be careful when you categorize and generalize about a group of people as a whole..Liberal Democrats, Conservatives Republicans all have their fair share people who are just a little too far left or right for everybody's liking, but you know you can always exercise your right to vote and hope your party can EVENTUALLY get somebody in office who can save the nation from the sky falling.
Until then

Unions don't keep anything afloat except the campaigns of liberal politicians. It's always been the workers. Unfortunately, the workers' hard-earned money is spent by the unions on political bribes that the hard-working laborer may not even agree with. This has gone way off the topic. But, when I hear this week that the unions are now demanding their piece of our Presidency for the money they've spent, there's no doubt in my mind how corrupt they are.

Guess what surprises me is that the unions are so baltant about it and no one seems to care.
I should have been able to see this coming when WJC was getting sexual favors in the oval office and nobody gave a rats patooty.
As long as I can get my 60" TV and my X-box 360 on credit, all is right with the world, so who cares. :yike:

Beretta makes some of the finest firearms known to man. Hope they find a home that welcomes them with open arms.

In all seriousness Bob, you can't blame a business for trying to increase bottom line while maintaining quality. If You owned the company you would be working every day at doing the same thing, if not then you wouldn't be in business for long.
The machinests at Boeing have always walked a thin line, balancing wages with forcing the company to look elsewhere. It seems Boeing has been pushed to the tipping point and if they leave then they have every right to do so, just as you have the right to strike against them for higher wages/benefits.

My concern is making it long enough at my place of employment to retire before a.) somebody gets slick with the pension fund (ala Enron) or b.) I get duped by some other white collar criminal on my portfolio(B.Madoff). All of which characters may hero's to some in here.
If you're interested in your companies bottom line have you given some of your earnings back? Have you decided you want to pay for all your benefit package on your own because you feel after 25 years its the right thing to do for the company when the whole time your job is being shopped for dirt cheap labor around the world.
How about if you own the company has any of your hired help given back their earnings because they wanna help your bottom line.. I mean lets be honest..You have two separate agenda's in play all eager to blame each other for the woe's of the company.. Companies bottom line is to make money i think everybody gets it but when the salaries get so ridiculously disproportionate and they could effectively have 90 people (who could make 60k a year)working for the company full time all year long for the salary they pay JUST you..Maybe you and the dozens and dozens on mahogany row who make as much or more are the problem.
And once the cancerous hourly worker is no longer the problem to the bottom line which level of the work force is next? The mid level white collar guy who doesn't think the plan is such a good idea anymore.
Plans are usually always fun when your in them- Look I have no problem with guys who don't want to work a union job or be apart of something that can help you to a better life or standard of living just don't bash those that do. There are a lot of people, many in this forum who would take a union job and all if can offer in a New York second and it doesn't mean their lazy and can't work anyplace else.

Good for Beretta  I would leave Maryland to. I was just watching the news report on rain tax. :yike: Are you kidding me. They said that Maryland is starting a new rain tax effective in June. So the more land you own the more tax you pay. :bash: :bash: :bash:
