Title: Musket cap falls off while carrying
Post by: Buckblaster on October 04, 2008, 01:49:54 PM
While packing my Black Diamond with it fully loaded, the musket cap falls off occasionally. Is there a way to keep that from happening besides putting the cap in my pocket until I see something to shoot? Maybe its just these CCI musket caps I'm using. Any suggestions?

I have heard you can put some clear finger nail polish on the nipple to help that.......... :dunno:
Have only used my ML once time three years ago, so what do I know though.

squeez it a little before you put it on. It will fit as tight as you want it to.

I have had this problem. Try buying a new nipple. Some just have too much taper.

Thats why I switched back to a #11.  I've seen musket caps shaped just like a #11.   It's minus the flange.  Not sure if it works any better.

I had the same problem with mine and then I started putting the caps on with a caper.  The caper squished then just enough that they say put.

I've had problems with CCI musket caps not fitting as well as RWS, along with nipples that were too small.

My Black Diamond is the same way, so I just close the bolt on the cap and leave it that way while hunting.

I had the same problem, so for my hunting I squeeze the wings before they go in the capper, they fit tight and have never come off since.

I thought about closing the bolt on the cap but decided that might be a little risky to carry like that. It might work for you but I'm not sure that is what I want to do. Might try the #11's next. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

When you put the cap on just use your fingernail to pinch down on a couple of the filanges that stick up, I've never had one fall off doing that....

I shoot a knight bighorn, they usually don't have the problem with the caps...

Get a Knight Red Hot Nipple threaded for your breech plug.
These nipples have a larger O.D than other nipples and the caps stay on real tight.

I sqeeze all of mine prior to putting them into my capper. I may look for a little larger nipple in the future.

Yep,   go back to #11 caps and never worry about it again.  Tis what I did.  :)

Same problem I have with my Black Diamond, I put a tiny bit of silicone grease on the outside of the nipple and they never fall off now, squeezing them sounds like a better idea though!

Buy a knight with the red hot nipple, they never come off....

I used to use a small piece of plastic tubing with ID just smaller than the OD of the nipple and cut about 1/8"-1/4" long. Slide it over the nipple and cap just below the contact point, you will be good to go

Trying to picture the tube idea? could that be construed as the cap not bieng exposed the the elements? that is still one of the reg's isn't it?

It could be, your call. You could just pinch that cap enough to fit tightly as well.

I used to use a Lyman .54 cal. Trade rifle with black powder, I felt that was handicapped enough  ;)

Pinching the cap works great on my .54 cal Thunderhawk.  I hit the brush rather hard, and always had problems with the cap coming off.  Have never had one come off since pinching the caps I actually give them a slight bite on the edges before I put it on for a walk.
