So....starting to think about the upcoming crab season. If anyone has any old freezer burned fish that you have been wanting to get rid of and are in the Snohomish County general area please keep me in mind....it makes good crab bait.
-
I do but, I don't think you'll fit her in the crab pot.
Wait.....
Probably not what you're looking for. Disregard :chuckle:
-
I'm in the same proverbial boat - I was saving all of my trimmings from the salmon last year for crabbing, but lost it all a few weeks ago when the freezer quit on me...
-
I forget now who it was, but an awesome member on here was offering shad last year to people. I was going to pick some up but never had the chance to get down his way.
-
I'd take some shad....would make for good crab bait.
-
not trying to tell a man his business but if you get a chance to go dig some nasty ole horse clams they work flat awesome as well, ya just crack their shell with a hammer and stuff them in your bait boxes, it works awsome and you can also inject a couple with sardine oil and freeze them....awesome bait
-
Lots of things work well. Squid is awesome, as is shad. Hard to beat either of those 2.
-
Carp work really well also.
-
i had a bunch i was saving then the freezer thawed on me last may. Son of a....
Never dug a horse clam, wouldn't even know where to look.
-
When does crab season open? I might be able to come up with something for ya. :)
-
I think end of June....

I think end of June....
Depends where, Area 7 is probably the weekend after July 4. Don't know for sure though.
-
I usually make a shad run or two and when we hit it good I am always looking to get rid of some to people that crab. I will post something if we end up with a bunch to give out this year.

:chuckle: I actually found my email and PMed the OP, I wasn't sure if you wanted it out there. I'll try to connect with you this year on a few to hold me over until the pinks move in. My old chickens that the wife won't eat might be enough bait though. ;)

i have use freezer burnt elk that someone gave me and it worked very well. i like to catch seabass and fillet them and use the body and guts as crab bait. it works every time

That's nice, if you're on the coast where you can keep them, thanks WDFW... :bash:

why cant you?
-
why cant you?
No rockfish keeping in Puget Sound, this will be the third year of this idiocy. They even wanted to take cabezon mostly away this year, but then backed off with just an 18" minimum and reduced catch to 1/day, how generous.... :fishin: Pretty soon, this will be all we can keep.

I hate that we can't keep any rockfish. At least let us keep copper or quillback, and make us release the others! Let us keep 1 or something! And then give us a 120' deep rule to take away more fishing areas, and now the place I used to fish (some sunken boats) got removed :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :cryriver: Ok, done ranting......
-
can you keep greenling? they are a bottom fish right?
-
Yes....last time I checked I believe there were a limit of maybe 2? Check for yourself of courese. The bigger ones...over 12 inches make nice tasty filets....the small ones make good ling candy.
Just checked....an example is area nine under "other food fish"....no min size...daily limit two.
-
i keep 12 or 10 not sure at least thats what is was last year. i keep them under my bottom fish limit. they work well for crab and ling cod bait lol
-
I'm not sure if I would classify them under bottom fish. Of all the dives (over a thousand) I can tell you they are not anywhere near as prevelant as the flatfish I classify under bottom fish. However....I'm not the expert...I would contact F&G...if you find out please post as I'd like to know as well.
Now I'm curious....got an email sent in to see if we can clarify....I'll post up when (if) I get a reply.
-
Just called the game department and they said greenling was a bottom fish.
-
On the coast, the rockfish (bass) limit has been 10, but I have not fished it for a while. I looked, it is 12 "bottom fish" only ten of which can be rockfish, only 2 can be cabezon.
We (in the Sound) can keep 15 "bottomfish" only one will be a cabezon this year, no rockfish, I think includes greenling, sculpin, and flounder.
Page 10 in last year's regs say what are bottomfish.
-
Cool.....I'll be on the look out to try and keep a few extra that I may catch. Rigged properly they be the best ling bait around as we all know....thanks for making the call and posting up.
-
no problem its worth the call so i dont get a ticket. i like greenlingpan fryed its good stuff
-
Yep, greenling taste as good as lings in my opinion.
-
Old freezer burned fish?? Come on people everybody knows it's one of the top 5 sins to let your bounty of the sea get freezer burnt! Can it or vacuum seal it and eat it yourselves! Feed the heads and guts to the crabs :twocents:
-
crabs don't even really like freezer burned fish, just sayin
