Glad Moose is ok. Did he just get balled up in that den with the bear?
I guess I better breed Whisper sooner rather than later... I don't want Moose getting hurt or dead before I can get some pups!
-
That is a rough day! Ouch!
-
Holy smokes......lets here the story.
-
That sucks! Where was this at?
-
Yeah I was thinking the same thing Bart, might not want pups right now but wouldn't hurt to get some out of him before something else happens where I can't get there as quick as I did. Went out on Sunday and gave the wife "ill just go out for a little bit and check a few spots and be back by noon" haha she just laughed like she always does and sayd "yeah sure". Started like out like any spring day where its hard to find bears,j and if they're out they are moving far from their dens. Checked a bunch of areas, got one decent strike but not real hard but couldn't get it going so I moved on. Was gonna take one last road off the top of this mountain that went down to the highway and when I hit the highway was just gonna head home and not waste anymore gas for no reason. Well 50yds down that road Moose blows up and the other dogs did right after. A backstory on this road is that I caught one in a den/cave before in late fall, luckily only a couple dogs got swatted in the face and weren't hurt too bad. Well after they struck I turned down Moose and Girl to get it going if they could and I heard Moose open and then Girl so I turned Stella, Tater, and Savage. All these dogs are my older dogs who have been around the block and know the deal pretty good. Well after I turned em down they sounded treed like 25yds behind me just off the road. I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on and backed up and stopped and about 10-15ft off the road I saw they were barking at something on the ground. So I walk over there and see the hole and it was only big enough for one dog to fit into and went back about 8ft or so (didnt know till later) and I can't see Moose but the other dogs are at the front trying to get in and can maybe only fit half their bodies in there. Well finally I get down there and move the dogs and see Mooses ass end and I can tell something has him or he's got something. I thought maybe a bobcat since he's struck em before and how small the opening was but then I found out that something had him. Ran back to the truck to grab my 10mm and get back to the hole and at some point he got free from the bear and got semi turned around in the hole to where his head was towards me, he was fighting the bear back but the bear definetly had the advantage and was tearing him up. I tried to reach down below his neck and grab his collar and in the middle of it he bit me on the wrist down to my bone, hurt like hell and still does but had to get him out of there. I think in the moment he thought I was the bear, you could see it in his eyes that anything that got close to him he was trying to bit. Well I finally reached with both hands above his head and was able to grab him by the collar above his head and pull some and got him out a little and the bear was still inside the hole but where I could see him without hitting Moose and shot it towards the face and hit it in the body somewhere and it let go of Moose and he got out of there. Then I had to shoot it in the head 2 more times to kill it for good. Was a big sow. Should be getting Moose back from the vet, layers of stitches upon stitches, plus drain tubes everywhere, next time Bart gonna have to get ahold of you ASAP and head up your way, didn't want to risk it with this one though, just too tore up.

:yeah: Hope Moose get better! Love this Moose's story!!!! Becareful Buddy.

:yike:
Holy cow, man! Glad Moose is still with ya-
-
I hope he heals up quick. Glad you were able to get him out of there.
-
Yeah- I am not good enough to work that kind of injury. We can fix up the smaller holes, but life threatening injuries should go to the vet. Glad he's on the mend.
-
I Hope Moose and yourself get back to a hundred percent soon, let us know.
-
Moose is doing good, walking fine with no limps, just sore as hell and looks like Frankenstein. Stiches and drain tubes everywhere but vet said she thinks he should make a full recovery. Said give him a couple weeks before much exercise but Ill probably give him 3-4 weeks before getting him back out

Quick question for those that use hounds......
They must love it. They must have so much drive that they simply wouldn't want to not do it.... especially after being injured.
My only experience with hunting dogs is upland bird....never hunted with hounds for any big game but I think I would enjoy it. Maybe a lion hunt one of these days where hounds are legal.
-
You're probably best sticking to not hunting hounds! Haha one lion hunt and you're gonna be hooked and want to do it and spend thousands upon thousands in dog food, vet visits, and anything dog related. Personally I think you should go to Idaho and try to get to tag along on a lion hunt and see how you like it. If you like to hunt you wont be disappointed, nothing like watching dogs work a track out. Bear hunting is even better but can cost you a lot more
-
I would never have time to devote to the care of the dogs let alone the hunting aspect when it comes to training. I'd have to save my pennies and get out with Dale. I'll leave the dog training, caring, and handling to those that have the passion.
-
Why would dogs go into the hole? Is there a way you can train them to not go into the hole? Obviously I know nothing about hunting with dogs. just a general question.
thanks

Because he has the desire to get the bear that much. Its bred into them. Not all dogs are going to bail into that hole, most of my older dogs will and would of if it was big enough for more than one dog to fit into but it wasnt. My younger dogs some may bay good at the front of the den hole but may not quite bail in there. They have a hatred for them bred into them.

Hope your hound recovers OK.
Hound hunting gets in your blood, it's there for life.
I know , I really miss it.

Good boy moose! Glad moose is gonna be there for another hunt! Hound hunting looks awesome but I hate seeing even my shorthair injured. Not sure I'd do too well with a injured hound like that. Those dogs really love what they do though it looks like! I always like looking at hound pics and would love to tag along on a hound hunt for the experience. Hey bucknaze would you ever be interested in a tag along helper/watcher for a hound hunt?
-
Thanks guys. Things can definetly get hairy in a minute! Hed be dead if i didnt get there when i did. BULLBLASTER Im sorry Im not allowed to bring non-tribal members with me hunting or Id be more than happy to take ya out

Really? Is this something new, or just for the hounding you're doing?

Hey no problem. Eventually I will find someone to tag along with. Not trying to hunt or kill for myself just want to experience the hound hunting and see some treed critters.
Hoping moose makes a full recovery soon!
-
Glad he is healing up. I sure hated seeing stitches and tubes coming out of my dogs.

A-MEN!

Was always fun following dogs while we looked for cats and drinking coffee and telling stories watching for tracks and seeing deer and elk still don't see why they stopped it it was the chase and the tree that was the exciting part.
-
heard about moose. hope he gets better so yal can get out having fun again

You might ask your vet about Scarlet Oil, we had a dog tore up real bad last year. Looked like he had to sew her whole head back on. He had me put Scarlet Oil on the stitches every day and it healed up amazingly fast and you can't even tell she was stitched back together now.
-
Holy smokes... Some of my hounds could use a head transplant!!! :chuckle:
I will find out more about that scarlet oil.
-
Tough dog
-
Dogs a fricken SAVAGE! Glad hes ok.
-
Thanks everyone. I will look into the scarlet oil. Hes ready to go hunting already. Trying to keep him as immobile as possible. Will be ready to go when wacoyotehunters dogs get here. Caught a couple more yesterday. Left moose and savage at home and hunted mainly pups.
