I have had a blast so far and can tell you that this moose hunting is addicting. Anyhow, I have lots of pics and have taken notes so the story may be long and drawn out but the ride should be fun ;)
For anyone that hasn't seen the movie, watch this clip and pay close attention to "Ralph" running from the bad guys and shooting the gun over his shoulder without looking at his target. Now picture a 140 class bull moose pissed off as hell, seeing Pope waving his arms and white lens at him and Pope running to the truck taking pics over his shoulder the same way, LMFAO :lol4:, it was priceless. Waid and I followed behind watching the whole thing, Pope even got pics of us in the background, Shawn can you post them on here for everyone to get a chuckle :chuckle:.

Thats not all he had to do, he was the buffer between my 10 year old daughter and that bull as well. All the while running down the road yelling for Pope to hit the remote :chuckle:
As I said the first day we got off to a late start. Around 7:00am I got a call, we were somewhere east of Vantage, from M-Ray. He left a message telling me that He and Pope got up the mountain, hit their first draw and glunked. A few minutes later they had 3 bulls in view but couldnt see the head of the biggest :bash: but said it was 300 pounds larger than the other two. I think Pope got a few pics of the other two, maybe if we beg he will post those too. ;)
So we roll into Outfitters house around 11:00am and everyone is still out hunting. It wasn't long before Jody showed up and started making lunch, what great hosts these people are!!!
We BS'd for a while when Pope and M-Ray rolled in with big toothie grins and showed me the pics on the camera, :whoo: the excitement just tripled.
A bit later Joe showed up with his client and brought one of his "pets" outside to stretch, I stayed well out of reach, however Waid and my daughter got right in on the fun, here are a couple pics. :yike:

My daughter just gave me the inventory, 23 snakes, 2 bearded dragons, 3 iguana's, 4 dogs and a cat, can you tell she had a great time!!! She was pretty disappointed that we weren't staying there the whole time :chuckle:

Back when we used to cruz the loop in Puyallup I was in a buddies car he gooses it showin off or something and something falls out of the visor..... A FREAKIN BABY BOA!!!!! needless to say by the time i figured out what it was I think i had a heart attack pissed and sh!t myself all at once :chuckle: I swear that was the turning point for me lol....anyway didn't mean to tread jack.

And for those that may be rolling their eyes, it really was 20+ miles, the GPS's were set each day. Would have been one hell of a job packing that far.
Saturday rained like hell too, even with rain gear we were soaked, although I think more from sweat than rain. Here she is right close to where we found my target for the next month and a half ;)

Before we headed out Oufitter came rolling in with his client, they had dropped a nice bull that morning, pic below.
We hunted hard and poor Pope was calling his ars off but the 70+ degrees had them shut up early so we sat at camp until 3:00 or so before going back up to the "Brokeback Bull" area. Unfortunately there was no repeat performance that evening and the day ended pretty uneventfully.

Opening morning, and Rob isn't at the hunting area. M-ray and I decide we are going to go find moose. Here is the first one we saw that morning. There were 4 in all. A couple grunts and 3 or 4 moose materialized from the spot. The big one I never saw...but the body was substantially larger thant he body on this bull.

On the way out of the moose area the first morning, I spotted a hawk circling my truck. M-ray probably thought I was crazy but I stopped and snapped a few pictures.

Back at Outfitter's house that day, we met up with Huntinphool. Outfitter/Joe broke out their snakes. I'm not real fond of snakes but took one for the team and took out the macro lens for some close ups... Those snakes are sort of friendly when they aren't trying to kill and eat Joe's dogs...

I'm about 40 yards from the truck and M-ray is yelling at me to hit the unlock button on my truck. I yelled back at him to throw Huntinphool's 10 year old daughter in my truck. They left the door open for me and I managed to snap this photo of the bull coming at me. Notice Huntinphool and W70 in the background? Why they were following this bull I don't know. Crazy.

I jumped in my truck and grabbed my handgun. The bull is in front of my hood and is pissed. He turned and walked into the bushes about 20 yards away. We all got out and BS'ed about what just happened. All the while the moose is right there grunting at us and pissed. We decide to call it a night.

He walks over to grab his bow and thinks, ah to hell with this, and goes and grabs his .218 tack driver. Off he goes sneaking down the road while Waid takes his elk reed and starts turkey clucking, I have no idea how he does that :dunno:
The turkeys got away unscathed thanks to a chipmunk that Shawn REALLY wanted to shut up :mgun:

Friday night we put Jim Beam and his Crown to bed and set the alarm for 4:00am. The ring came way too early as far as I was concerned but I did have to get up to anyway so out I went. It was pouring down rain and I figured the JB drinkers were going to need a little more sleep to fend off the effects of the previous evening anyway so back into the bag I crawled. Set the alarm for 4:30am and hoped it the weather would let up by then, WRONG!!!!
At about 4:45am I heard some talking so I got up and got Shorty dressed and went to start packing up to hit the new cabin. We rolled out a short time later and made it to the new cabin just after light. I still cant believe Shawn remembered Outfitters directions in the shape we were all in the night before but he got us there with only one missed turn, and that was because someone had knocked the street sign down. We unpacked all our gear, so as not to have it snatched out of our rigs and headed for the gate. There was one truck already there and I thought it might be PA Ben but it turned out to be a couple elk hunters on bikes. Packs and raingear on we started what would end up to be a long, wet hike. About 4 1/2 miles in Shawn and Mark spot a bull just off the road and standing on a hill about 60 yards in front of us. We stop but Waid is out ahead of us and keeps walking down the road and right on by the bull. It waits until he passes below it and the bull walks off into the timber. As it turns out the bull was not a shooter anyway but Mark still gave Waid a chatting to once we caught up to him.
I hear a bugle down below us so Mark bugled back and I hit my cow call just to see what would happen when all of a sudden Shawn turns to me with "that look". We heard a moose "glunk" up ahead and not too far down the road. We slowly headed on and Shawn would hit his call every 50 feet or so until we were right on top of him. This bull was cranked and had the lowest glunk I had heard on the trip, it was like a subwoofer thumping and would vibrate right through you. Waid and I worked into position for a 30 yard bow shot with the rifle as backup just in case it turned out to be "the one". Shawn kept getting the bull to glunk, rip up trees and bust branches just inside the timber but it would not come out for nothing. After at least an hour Waid finally spotted him about 50 yards inside the thicket and we got a very good long look at his rack. We both determined it to be a shooter but having never been in that position before I wanted Shawns opinion as well. Waid worked his way back to get Shawn while I waited and burned the bulls rack into my memory. About 5 minutes later Shawn came cautiously up and asked where he was. I pointed through a tiny window of trees and brush and Shawn put the Swaros on him. It only took a minute before Shawn said it was one of the biggest Shiras he had ever seen and said its definitely a shooter. We had heard of a pig in the area that was estimated at 60" and thought this might be him, although Shawn thought more along the lines of 57". Everything else on him looked good to the only probelm was he was not cooperating. After about another hour it finally went up and over the hill and we headed back to the trucks, soaked, tired and I for one was deflated have seen a true bull of a lifetime, had him at 20 yards but couldn't get a shot without taking a chance of hitting brush and wounding it.
Back at the cabin we regrouped and made plans to go back after him the next morning. After checking the GPS's we determined that we all had hiked 10 miles in the pouring rain and knew tomorrow would hurt even worse. My daughter was a real trooper, she stayed right with us the whole way and never complained once, not bad for a just turned 10 year old girl
Sunday we headed back in before dark and got all the way in there very early. The guys on the bikes went passed us on the way in and I later found out that they were headed for the same bench the bull was on. About an hour down the road we ran into them, they had stopped to bugle a clearing below so I took the opportunity to chat with them. I explained to them that I had a moose tag and that we had found a nice bull on a bench at a certain mile marker and asked if they wouldn't mind waiting until we got in there to see if the bull was back. They were very understanding and said they would gladly hunt a different draw for a few hours so as not to push the moose out, and said that if we ran into them later and thought that they were causing any kind of problem that we should let them know and they would move out. Can you believe that, how cool of them
We got to the spot where the bull had been the day before and Shawn let out a call, somewhat tired and horse from the day before but never complain. The bull didn't answer. We tried all over the area but nothing, no replies At this point I was feeling a little beaten down, having thoughts of dropping the big one all night and then not even hearing one
We headed on down the road and it went around the hill and up, I looked at Waid and he was just shaking his head, if we had only known the road went up here the day before I could have gone up and cut the bull off when he left After another mile+ we ended up at the top of the nob looking down to where we had done all the calling the day before. I sat down all bummed out and Shawn threw out another call just for chits and giggles. "GLUNK, GLUNK" Holy crap, there he is, right down where he was yesterday. We had walked right by, called and he just stayed put and didn't make a sound. Instantly my hopes were sky high again and we quickly made plans for an ambush. Long story short he disappeared again without so much as a peep. This is one smart old bull. That's pretty much how the weekend ended, we went on the long defeated hike back to the trucks and then back to the cabin to pack up.
I am heading back Friday to try and find him again but have no clue as to how to get this smart old bugger to slip up. Shawn talked to Outfitter and they determined that it is indeed the same bull several folks have put in the 60" area and Outfitter put me in my place by telling me forget the bow, "that bull just has to get dead" I will pack both again but if there is any chance of getting him at a distance I am not going to risk it. I just want one shot at it, is that too much to ask More story to come after this weekend.

Glad to see you enjoying the hunt with good friends and family. Hope you tag the booner and can't wait to see the field pics, but from the sounds of it this hunt has already been a success.
That is a major understatement, all the thank you's and credits will come after the hunt is over, it may take till the end of November so I dont want to get ahead of myself. I am the tag holder but lets not get it twisted, this has been a group effort to this point and I can assure you there will be a couple more friends help me before its done. This site has been a real blessing, I have met some great people along the way, been reunited with old friends and am very thankful for the help I have been given. Just for example, Mark, Waid and Shawn all took days off work, spent their own money on fuel and food, and hiked their collective asses off, not for themselves but for me. Joe offered his home to me and his resources even though he had paying clients in camp. None of them ever complained once about the work or the weather and they all felt for me when Sunday ended. I will never be able to express to them how much I appreciate their help or how much they added to the experience of my OIL hunt. I have lots of time left to hunt but cant imagine it getting any better than this first weekend, I only hope I can make them proud and tag a bull worthy of their collective hard work and effort.

I hope you get him this weekend, but if you don't, I want another crack at that guy. If you get that guy on the ground, I better get a call before his body gets cold... Oh, and make sure you bring in a film camera so you can certify it as the new WA record... ;)
You got it, care to make a 10 hour round trip just to click off some pics? You wont have to worry about a phone call, if I get lucky you will be able to hear M-Ray and I whooping it up from there.
I still have not gotten confirmation on the film photo thing, is that still in effect?

Seams like all the deer hunters were seeing moose and not deer. but you can put on a lot of miles running everywhere they say they saw one and the moose won't be there then but a mile away or something. :yike: Just hunt from day light to dark...you'll find the one of your dreams!
There's a football coach in Usk that get's his whole football team out there looking for guys, I think for a price :twocents:.

I ran into the hunters of the "big Ba$+ard!!!!! " they told me that the 9 miles one way and not getting a shot at the beast was wearing them out. I can believe it. I just happened to be in a little store near elk to highway rd and hwy 2. in walks two guys looking like they just came from the far side of hell but with a smile on there faces. i thought they had the same luck with there seer season that i did. we talked in line for a while and found out it was the crew that had gotten chased by a moose. what a crazy place to meet?
anyway they were great to talk to and asked if i could give a update. They have a monster in there sights and have him located but getting to him is the problem. i think some on said 9sq miles of territory. that is a large area to track and call in a beast that is worth the effort they are putting out. I will be back in new port this weekend after a whitetail so maybe i will bump into them again. hopefully they will be long home by Thursday. They did say there will be pics coming with there updates.

You got it Richard, I'm not one to turn down an offer like that ;)
I picked up M-Ray about 11:30am, packed up his gear and we were "East Bound and Down" as the late Jerry Reed would sing. feature=related. After a quick stop in NorthBend for a TacoTime lunch we were ready for the drive. A couple :pee: breaks and 6 1/2 hours later we were getting close but realized we wouldn't make it for the evening hunt so we headed to Outfitters place to say hello, check out the trophies from the weeks worth of clients and BS before bed. The old clients were gone but the new long guns were there and the stories quickly started.
The next morning we dressed and headed for the truck and I quickly realized I had not dressed properly, it was a brisk 18 degrees. After changing my socks we headed for the hunting area. Once we were there we unloaded the bikes, put on our packs and headed up the road passed the gate. It only took us 20 minutes to reach the spot that had taken us 1.75 hours the weekend before however I could already tell I was going to pay dearly for this convenience. :yike: The first morning was pretty uneventful, there was no sign of the big bull from the weekend before but we did manage to see a cow. That evening we headed out again but took a different raod behind the gate, to my dismay it went up and up and up........ The last few 100 yards or so I got off the bike and pushed it the rest of the way to warm my toes back up and not spook anything that might be at the top of the ridge. We got right to the top and M-Ray whispers "moose". I glance over to the left and I see a cow disappear into the timber to the left and some whitetail butts go up and into the timber the same way. (the first and second pics are on this hill) We proceeded up to that spot and continue on down the road but after glassing lots of draws, ridges and cuts we decided to head back. M-Ray spots some more whitetail down below but they were all does. We peddled back to the truck, loaded up and headed back to the cabin. I needed more ice-T so we stopped at Millers Corner Store. We walked inside and a big guy standing in line smiles and asked if we got one today, I told him no and that we were moose hunting not deer hunting. He told us a location we should try, saying he saw a nice 40" in there. We said thanks and got in line to pay. He then proceeds to tell us of a forum he is on and that last week there were a few guys and a little girl up there that got chased by a bull moose back to their trucks. :chuckle: M-Ray and I just looked at each other and started laughing, M-Ray pointed at himself and said "that was me, with his daughter" :lol4: We introduced ourselves and he said his name was Jacob :hello: It was nice to meet you Jacob. I got back in the truck and checked my voicemail since I now had service. I had a message from a guy that had painted my house a few years ago that had seen some of my mounts through the window while painting. We had talked about hunting after that and he explained that he had never taken anything with size before and wanted to know where I hunted. I tild him I would take him one day if he every wanted to leave the area he and his buddies frequented but he would have to keep it on the down low. Well a month or so ago he called and decided to take me up on the offer, only problem was is that I told him I probably wasn't going to be deer hunting this year since I had to spend my time concentrating on moose. I told him "I'll tell you what, I will draw you a map of one of my spots but only if you go alone and don't tell anyone". HE agreed and picked up the info a couple days later. Well the voicemail was from him telling me that he went to that spot and got his biggest buck ever, a big 4X6 and couldn't thank me enough. Now I find myself doing the same thing as him except for moose :dunno: Back to the cabin we went. :fire.:
The next morning it had warmed up to 22 but the bike seat seamed to have gotten harder :chuckle: Passed the gate we went, up and up until we hit the first clearing on out right. I noticed M-Ray had slowed but I kept going knowing he would be right behind me in no time. I stopped a few hundred yards later when I realized he wasn't coming. I waited for a couple minutes then headed back and found his bike laying in the road and his head peaking up over some tall grass in the ditch. He was motioning me to stay down and put his hands up and out like a moose rack. I got off the bike, hunched down and duck walked to where he was sitting. He pointed out a ridge about 1/4 mile away and sure enough there was a bull. We glassed him and watched for a bit before determining he was too small. :bash: Oh well, 1/2 mile in and we had already spotted one, maybe this would be the day we found the big guy out. Well we put in many more miles, glassed and called in every draw, cut and ridge but headed back having only found the one bull. We got back to the cabin, had a quick lunch and took a nap. When we got up I made an executive decision, we were going to head to a different location, one where we could drive the roads in the truck and not need the bikes, M-Rays eyes lit up and he had a little hop in his step again :chuckle:
We were now in persuit of Bone's "Gletty". We headed up in the hills and stopped several draws and called, I think they are winding down because they are shutting right up. We continued up to the ridge but about 1/2 mile from the top we spotted a couple orange vests on the road overlooking a large clearing. We drove up, turned off the diesel and said hello. I asked them if they had seen any moose and they said they had seen some cows but no bulls. M-Ray looking out my window to a finger ridge over their shoulder spots movement and tells them there is a deer over there. One of the guys says "thats not a deer its a bear" M-Ray put up his binos and said "it sure is" We got out and glassed it with them but it was about 1000 yards off and working up hill, they didnt have a shot. They said they were going to go up the hill and try to work down on him, we told them we would sit and not scare it off with the truck. About 20 minutes later the bear disappeared into a small stand of trees in the draw. It was getting darker by the minute so we fired up the truck and headed up the road. We drove a short ways and saw one of the guys standing there looking into the draw. We got out again and he said his buddy had left and that the bear was gone. We told him where the bear had gone and got our binos out. I spotted the bear right away, not far down the hill and in a clearing. The guy kept looking but couldn't see it with his Bushnells so I handed him my Swaros. "Oh there he is" :chuckle: He set his rifle on a fallen tree and got his scope on him. I ranged it for him and told him 350 yards. He aimed and aimed and aimed, all the while M-Ray and I had our fingers in our ears waiting for a shot that never came. The bear stood broadside for about a minute before turning, I hear M-Ray behind me "*censored*" :chuckle: Then all of a sudden BANG!! M-Ray says looks like you hit him, the bear just hunched and stopped. I told the guy "if you can see him hit him again" BANG!! this time the bear started up the hill and went behind some trees. It looked like he hit him and with a 300win mag it should have been a no brainer. M-Ray stayed put while I drove the guy up to the top of the finger ridge and dropped him to go down. I them went back and we talked the guy right to where the bear had been standing. He looked but couldnt find any blood. M-Ray told him to follow the tracks and he did. To cut off a bit of the story we headed up met the guy at the top of the ridge, M-Ray had called the guys buddies on the radio and told them their friend needed help and they were now there as well. M-Ray even loaned the guy a flashlite because he didnt have one. :dunno: He told us he did a "25 yard circle" but saw nothing :bash: M-Ray told him he should come back in the morning because there was a good chance there was a dead bear in there. I seriously doubt they did but we did our part.
Now just getting dark, we continued up the road to the ridge to turn around, the second pic is of the sunset at the top of this hill.
Monday morning we again hit the gate with the bikes, you can't imagine what that seat felt like :yike: We hit the first clearing again and instantly spotted a moose, it was a bull and it was heading our way. While we glassed him and tried field judging M-Ray spotted another bull on a finger ridge not too far from this guy. About 1/4 mile away we could tell he was bigger than the first so we shifted our focus. Still only about 45" I wanted to get a closer look so we got back on the bikes, rode around the knob and down the road to where we thought we could do a sneak. We worked our way up to the top but realized we needed to go down the road a bit more so we headed back down the ridge, got the bikes and went to the next hill. We climbed up and couldn't see him through the trees. We called, raked a tree and bushes, broke some branches and headed his way trying to get him to think we were another moose. It worked, we had cut the distance to about 150 yards and there he was ripping up a tree. After looking him over he looked to have about 8" wide paddles, split brows, 7 points per side and about 45" wide. We couldn't tell the length of the paddles but they were not real long so we passed on him too. Back on the bikes we headed off for Mr. Big again.
Several miles later we were glassing a big open area but there was nothing to see except loggers :bash: and they were making a lot of noise. We decided to call it quits when M-Ray spotted another bear. He was a long way off but looked to be another heavy 300lb+ blackie. We watched him work his way up and into the timber and then headed back to the cabin to pack.
We went back to Outfitters to shower before the long drive home and chatted a bit. He had a couple 150 class whitetail at 100 yards that day but none of his clients wanted to shoot since they are all from "whitetail country" and were looking for mule deer :bash: My deer hunt would have been over, I can gaurantee you that :chuckle: One of his guides had a different guy on a 170 class muley but being a flatlander couldn't make the hike to cut the distance from 1200 yards to shooting distance :dunno: He had another guy from Maine that is sitting on a 180 class buck and waiting for it to make a mistake, I hope he got it, he was a good guy and a tough hunter.

We continued on and right before Vantage I see the moon popping up to my left just over the ridge. I stopped to get a pic and M-Ray spots a cool looking cloud so I got a shot of that too.
Looks like tag soup so far but I will keep on it until the last day, more pics and stories to come, I hope you guys don't get fed up with the updates.

Huntnphool is so stinking considerate he tried to talk me and his bro WF70gonehunting into going Deer hunting this weekend just because we (me and wf70) still had deer tags :dunno:. We had to convice him we wanted to hunt moose before he'd give in but it looks like we'll be leaving early in the morn for moose haven! He's somthin else :)

Do any of you guys have M rays cell # ? I dont know if he is locked into a certain area of 49*, But i do know where there is a very large bull west of him by about 10 to 15 miles. If anyone knows more about his hunting boundries please share with me and if it falls into where this bull lives, I will gladly give him directions..... with the promise of sealed lips cause I hunt deer and turkey there and dont like to have a bizillion people to deal with. Oh there is a very large bear in the area too that eluded us opening deer weekend !!!! Damn thing leaves poo the size of small sports cars !
I will check my pm and here as often as possible, but am going to shoot some ring necks in the morning !!

Its pretty much done Brian, although we did manage to get a bull to glunk back at us Friday evening.
After WF70 showed up at my house and got all his gear packed in the truck we were off. I headed down to the Flying J for diesel and spent another $130.00, grabbed a couple bags of ice, a giant Ice-T and hit the highway. About 3 miles down I-5 I realized I had forgot my binos :bash: so we got off the freeway and went back to pick them up. Finally back on the road we headed for Black Diamond. We picked up M-Ray about 7:30am and packed his gear as well, while WF70 was busy checking out the trophy room :bash: Thats okay, I made him drive :chuckle:
By the time we hit Cle Ellum my bladder was about to burst so we stopped at Indian John Hill for a little relief :pee: Back on the road again but now I'm getting hungry, I told WF70 to stop in Ellensburg at McCrakens for a couple more large Ice-T's and a breakfast burrito. M-Ray immediately starts :'( explaining to us that he worked his ass off the previous weekend and gained 7 pounds, saying its because of the 2 times he ate there :dunno:
Wanting to talk to Outfitter we headed to his place again and arrived about 1:00pm. We were greated by a camo clad client with a big toothy grin. He introduced himself, although for the life of me I can't remember his name, and asked if we were "the moose hunters". We said we were and he told us Joe had ran to town and wasn't sure when he would be back. We told him we would be back Saturday and would talk to him then.
We headed to our adopted weekend home,(first pic) Thanks again Joe/Jody!!!, and were heading down the long driveway when M-Ray yells "COUGAR" I grab my riflle, open the door and try to bail out but the sling is caught on the seat :bash: I get it undone and jack in a shell. I head down the road toward the cabin, M-Ray heads back and down in case it bails off over the edge. Slowly I worked toward the cabin but see nothing. Once there I hear a couple chipmunks start to go apesh#@ just over the other side so I quickly went around the cabin to look over the draw, nothing, it had vanished. I walked back to the truck where WF70 was waiting but M-Ray was still down in the thicket looking. We drove the rest of the way to the cabin and started to unload all our crap when "BANG" :o We carefully went around the cabin and saw M-Ray standing on the side hill with his arms in the air like Rocky Balboa at the top of the stairs during his workout feature=related
We get over to him and he says it was a bobcat and when he shot it did a backflip about 3 feet in the air and took off. We grabbed the bikes and headed down to where he had shot it. We found the ground all ripped up from the claws, looking like it did a burn out trying to get out of there. We looked all over but found no blood, M-Ray followed the tracks up into the hillside and disappeared. WF70 and I headed back to finish setting everything up and got dressed for the evening hunt.
At 5:00pm M-Ray still wasnt back so we turned on the radio and headed out on the bikes knowing he would catch up once he realized we had left. About half way up to where we were heading we ran into a guy that was hunting deer but only seen moose :chuckle: HE told us where he had been sitting and watching a big bull for the last three hours so we headed up there. We got to the top of a ridge and I stopped to glass a big cut. I sent WF70 up the road about 100 yards to the next bench to glass the other side. When I was satisfied there wasn't anyhting in the cut I rode toward WF70, only to find him holding up the stop sign with his palm. I stopped and could see past him standing in the middle of the road was a cow with her two calves. Knowing he was bigger than me I was glad he was between the cow and me :chuckle: thinking the chase may be on again :yike: She bailed off over the ridge to our left and the calves followed close behind. So if I skip the bulls can I take 2 calves? talk about good eats, milk fed moose :drool: It was getting dark fast so for chits and giggles I threw out a call, right away we got a couple glunks in return but could not find him on the thick hillside so we headed back to the cabin, hoping M-Ray had dinner ready :chuckle:
Once back we ate and M-Ray explained that he just had to check out the entire hillside to make sure the cat wasn't laying there somewhere, he never found it so we believe he missed the 175 yard offhand shot, thats a pretty small target at that distance.
Saturday saw us looking over the same areas with no luck so at lunch we decided to head to Outfitters to chat with Joe and check on Jody, who had been feeling a bit under the weather, and see if he was going to need any help with his clients. Jody was feeling better and Joe was out hunting so we headed out ourselves, checking out a different area. It ended pretty much the same way so back to the cabin we went. After a quick bowl of stew and rolls, a little Pendleton and Bud Lite we were sleeping hard.
Sunday morning we headed to the now familiar spots. (second, third pics) I'll tell you guys what, you all should be so lucky to have guys work this hard to help you notch your tag. Both of these guys burned their deer tags this year to come over to help me bag a moose, and never once gave it a second thought. This pic is what its all about.
We headed up and up and up again to where we had the bull glunking at us but again couldn't find him. After glassing and hiking down into a hell hole WF70 motions at me and M-Ray, he has spotted a bear, and wants one worse than I want a moose, so we headed back up the hill. I stopped to get some more pics. These pics are of them looking at a 350+ lb blackie.
Thats pretty much how this trip ended, we headed home beat as hell from all the bike riding and hiking again, as you can tell from the last pic :lol4: More to come I'm sure, will keep you all up to date.

In my defense (which I'm not a crack shot by any means anyway) but the Bobcat was facing me straight away which was even a smaller target probably like a baseball! I couldn't find any trees or stumps that would allow a good rest and when I sat down to use my knees I couldn't see over the brush so I was quite surprised to see him still standing there when I stood back up! So I've allways wanted a Bobcat so off hand it was going to be ... oh well 3 1/2 hrs of searching and no cat ... at least I gave it my best effort for recovery!

Yeah well the reason I threw my arms up was that cat did a 3ft high backward cartwheel and I thought I drilled him! It just goes to show you that even those little ba$+ards are tough! found a bit a blood but it was gone after 100 yards and then it was the needle in the haystack! Joe said a client of his had the same experience in the same area the week before and couldn't find it ... Those guys do have 9 lives I suppose! :chuckle:

We were seeing several moose in the Winchester area and Tacoma Creek area. I could have spent more time and got a bigger one but this one was in the right place at the right time! :hello:And I wanted it!. I'll PM you with other spots we were told about too. You won't have to ride the bikes! There's lots of hunting area to cover yet and with the snow the moose will be more visible! Besides the moose are just getting bigger with each day ( more to eat!) :chuckle:

We start the day out yesterday and Rob thinks he sees a pretty picture. He whips the truck around and I get to work. 6 shots later and we got it dialed in.

We messed around on Saturday and I'll let Huntnphool fill in the details. These two moose we ran into that night. They seemed very interested in something to the right. Also, we noticed that her back end was really messed up like something had been riding her...

On day two, Huntnphool's brother WF70 was the moose spotter. He spotted them everywhere, except when one was in the road 30 yards from him. How can he spot 5 moose miles away and not see them right in front of you on the road?

After splitting up with M_Ray and Huntnphool, WF70 and I decided to bike up the road. This was the bull that WF70 just about ran into. He finally saw it and we were able to take a few pictures. This bull was only about 400-500 lbs. He was a really young baby. Even though he was still young he has 2x3 front brow palms. In 3 or 4 years this guy will be a monster...

Last, WF70 spotted a deer bedded below us. Now, deer were open last week, but not this weekend...

it quit raining around 8:00 pm... No snow in the valley yet, a little on the ridges, and not more then 6 inches of old snow at the top...good tracking/migrating weather.

Rob took off on Saturday by himself to see if he could get it done before Thanksgiving, his intention was to return to the area where we had seen the big guy on reports from a couple of deer hunters that had seen him in there the week we were in Montana.
Monday afternoon I called to see how things were going and knowing that he was probably out hunting I only expected to leave him a message. I was quite surprised to have him answer ... he was on top of the mountain where we had seen the big guy, he said he only carried his phone in to get photos that he could send us and had no idea he had service there! While we were talking and he was filling me in on how he had only been seen a few small bulls and a bunch of cows he say's " Hold on I'll call you back!" well I'mm thinking big things are happening and about 5 minutes passes and he calls back "I got two bulls 150 yards below me" he says they are about like the one that chased you up the road that day (130 class) just a little too small!
Tuesday we did not talk but I got the text that I posted above:

Now I'm still optamistic cause my buddie Rob is a joker and I'm thiniking it would be like him to text me like that and then come pulling in my driveway with a 170 bull ... but not to be!
Today I get a viocemail from him saying he has passed on a couple more small bulls and one "Big One" with only single brow tines ... he didn't say how wide it was but at this stage if it was 50 inches I'm going to be giving him the atomic wedge! Yesterday he saw 3 small bulls and one shooter right at last light that got him excited. He was watching him trying to get a good look ... he could only see the white of the paddle but he wouldnt raise his head for a better look so Rob grunted at him and he finally looked at him ... it was a nice bull with 3 brows at least 12" wide paddles and lotts of points there was only one problem with this guy ... he only had one antler!!! the other side was totally gone, maybe from fighting? who knows but Rob would have dropped him had he had both sides!!!!
Today he saw 5 bulls including the one I had posted about earlier he said he wasn't sure on the width but he only had single brows so he didn't pursue him but he did say his brows allthough single were long like an elks eye gaurds.
So I'm not sure of the plan at this point Rob sounded kinda down and not sure his wife will be understanding of a return trip after turkey dinner ... I assured him it would be ok and I'm off now so we should go and get it done this weekend. :)

The best bull I saw this week would have easily been in the upper 160's but as Mark told you he only had 1 side left, it was the second bull I had seen that day like that :dunno: I did spot a very nice bull in the snow from about a mile away and decided he would do, about a 155 I would guess, but by the time I got to him I couldn't find him, even in the snow.
How appropriate I get on the computer this morning and find no less than 12 different members have sent me PM's offering to help. I can honestly tell each of you that I am very thankful today and appreciate each and every offer, should I get one and need help I will be calling. I have Joe and Jody (Outfitter) going way overboard helping me over there and also got a few calls from Brian (PendOreilleAdventures) giving me a couple places to check out.
I know there are loads of people on here that are :bash: there heads but you have to understand that this hunt was never about just killing something and notching a tag for me, obviously I could have done that the first day. I set a goal and planned to take it down to the last couple days to achieve it if I had to, now its down to finding something that will remind me every day of this rare opportunity I had. There will be no regrets, only memories of a wonderful hunt and good times.
Here are a couple pics from the last few days, I will post more when its all over with.
Thanks again to those that offered to help, I hope I will have the opportunity to return the favor in the future should you need it.

Honestly Rob, hats off to you for sticking to your goals, had similar thing several years ago for goat, went a couple times via float plane, passed at least eight or nine nannies, which were legal, but I wanted a bigger billy. Both friends tagged out, one on the first day and the other on second, one came back with me for the second trip. Again passed on a couple nannies and wanted the big guy, didn't happen, but man was it fun and the memories & experience I gained from the hunt for goat will stick with me forever. Good luck on this last push, get what you want and don't settle for something "YOU" personally won't be happy with...
Don't worry we'll get er done! If I were a betting man I'd say we'll be leaving around midnight tonite and we'll get a big one down before it's over and Rob will be very happy! :)

First I need to thank all the people that helped me out on this hunt. Hunting Cowboy, Rougheye, MagKarl, Grizzly95, Wea300mag, Ridgerunner, Burnhamrand, Cohoho and many others for offering to come over and help, Machias for offering to bring his pack mules if I got one in a bad place. Just because I didn't call doesn't mean you didn't help. Having the offers put my mind at ease wondering what the hell I would do if I got in a serious pinch and couldn't get my animal out before it spoiled. To each of you, thank you very much, it is much appreciated.
Shawn, you were sorely missed as was Waid and Shorty, I wish you all could have been there for the finale but understand. That first trip over was one I will never forget and will always have great memories of it whenever I reflect back on this hunt.

Saturday we woke to a few inches of new snow and the ride to the area was a bit more stressful than it had been. Just outside of Usk at first light Mark spotted this buck, he got caught out in the open and was very very nervous. It was still pretty dark so I had to slow the shutter down thats why the pics are not that sharp but you can still get a good idea of what he looked like.

Sunday we hunted hard again and with each passing hour the stress headache was needing Aleve. At 2:00 pm we had checked all the usual places and still had not seen a no brainer so I decided to throw all the rest of my apples in one basket and go for broke. We headed back into the spot Adam had shown us and I had accepted the fact that I had better just drop the next moose we saw. Well as luck would have it Mark spotted one right away. We got the binos up and took a good look. Standing just 60 yards broadside was a big cow, Mark looked at me and said there you go, the shot don't get any easier than that. Looking a little closer she had a shadow.

We went a little farther and again Mark made the spot, deep in the bushes. I got out and went through to get a better look and shot when again a calf appeared. It turned and trotted off and then all of a sudden his mother stood up 30 yards in front of me :yike: with the look of death in her eyes. Mark is in the truck saying "get back in here, don't get trampled" I slowly backed out watching her the whole time.
3:00 PM, only about 75 minutes of light left. Its getting down to pucker time and we figured I had used 60 days 22 hours and 45 minutes. We headed down the road and there was another one, once again a cow and calf :bash:
4:00 PM, about 15 minutes of light left and I'm thinking thats it. Mark being ever the optomist says "you just never know" I told him the fat lady was warming up her voice. All of a sudden Mark says "STOP! STOP!" Up go the binos and there about 30 yards off is a moose. We get the binos up one more time and take a good look. We cant see a rack so assume its a cow and start looking for a calf. I get a good look through the Swaros and tell Mark it looks like it has a dewlap or bell. Mark says "I;m going to check to see if it has balls" :chuckle: and he jumps out with his binos. He get back in and cant tell. We take one more good look and I told him it looked like he had bloody pedicles. Sure enough it was a big bull that had just dropped his antlers, the third one I saw on this trip.
4:05 PM, 10 minutes of light left I grab my bow and get out, Mark waits watching. I worked around the truck and into the trees and bush. The bull is watching and standing behind a couple X-mas trees and I have no shot or way to get around them without him busting. I motioned for Mark to start the truck and drive off hoping it would keep his attention long enough for me to make a move. Mark changed seats and fired up the diesel, the bull bolted :bash:
I watched where he went so I followed him through the trees and bushes when I saw him stop. Running out of light I told myself no time to sneak, if he bolts then so be it. I just start walking through the trees making all kinds of noise but knowing I didnt have a choice. To my amazement the bull just stood there. I had quickly cut the distance and had one small tree to get around. I tried to catch my breath real quick and took the side step to my left drawing back at the same time. I estimated 30 yards and quartering away so I put the 30 pin right behind the leg. It was amazing, every pin on my bow was on him, the only thing I needed to worry about was windage. I let it fly and heard the crunch of bone and grunt as he shot off through the trees. Right then the nerves kicked in and adrenaline started pumping, I was shaking like a leaf. I walked up to where he was standing and looked for blood on the ground, following his direction. My frist reaction was that I hit him a little back but at the angle I thought it would go right up into the vitals.
I spotted some blood drops and kept going when I heard soemthing. Looking up there he was about 30 yards in front again. I grabbed another arrow out of the quiver but he bolted again, this time with renewed speed. I went back and grabbed mark and took him to where I had last seen him and explained what happened. He suggested we leave him be and come back in the morning so not to push him too far.
One sleepless night was next. I would have sent out a post from Joes puter but didn't want to say I got one and then not be able to find it, hope you guys understand.
The next morning we hit the area and here is the first pick.

As it turned out it was a good choice to pull out of there and wait till morning. He had gone a ways and bedded down between that tree and log, he died in his bed. If he had enough energy to bed down rather than just fall over, he would have had enough to go farther if pushed.

Unfortunatly I will never get to hunt those "honeyholes" again unless I draw the raffle tag, which isn't going to happen. That being said, the area I got him and the other areas I hunted were given to me by guides or outfitters that do take their paying clients into and I can't violate that trust regardless how much I would like to have the sheds. I will contact the people responsible for this location info and see what they think though and maybe put a shed trip together. I can't ask anyone to spend money on fuel and time from their families just to go look for some shed antlers, but I do appreciate the offers.

Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement along the way if any of you have ever hunted that long you know its tiring to say the least and it gets easier to sleep in but I felt we owed it to you guy's that were watching to continue with the 5 and sometimes 4:30 alarms. Now who's gonna draw next year so I can do it again! :) ... Oh it might be me! ;)

Me too, I am hooked. I would imagine I have spent the most time hunting moose in this state from a personal bases, we figured 27 out of the 61 allotted, throw in a 9 day hunt in Montana right in the middle of it plus thanksgiving, didn't leave much time for anything else. Glad I have a very understandable family.

1. You are a hell of a hunter.
2. You have developed a cult following on this moose hunt.
Congrats on a great adventure ! Very few hunters would have stuck to their guns when coming this close to the end of the season.

Well thanks Falcon, but I'm just another hunter like everyone else on here. Mark and I were talking while heading out on the last day, was I going to be the first person in 13 years to not harvest a moose in that unit, not something I wanted to be famous for but came oh so close to.
Oh ya, please don't lose that tag Charlie, I am going to frame it :chuckle:

I have a 130 Class set of Blacktail sheds that I thinking about doing the same thing on. So yeah it is deffinatly do able.

Well we were unsuccessful in finding the sheds, even having scoured the area. :'( Mark did spot the small, 40" bull, that was hanging with the big guy right in the same area. PaBen is right, the snow is starting and if they are found I think it will be spring time.

If you have photo documentation of each and every calf you should email them to WDFW w/ a complaint letter about the tag numbers, that would be funny.

My point is that a couple of briefcases full of moose photos along with your written letter of why the number of tags is decreasing would probably be a conversation starter.
I will never draw again whacker and I suppose I could just sit back and laugh about it but the truth is it really bothers me when they do things that make absolutely no sense when you look at the numbers.

I don't either and I honestly believe they take the hunters word for it. I was out there 27 days and never ran into one game cop or F&W biologist. Instead they rely on the harvest questionare in which they asked how many day hunted, how many cows did you see, how many calves did you see etc. I answered 100+ for cows and calves and I'll bet they tossed the info thinking I was BSing them when in fact I really did see that many :dunno:

I think they just might want to increase the cost of applying for mountain goat, at least for non-residents, because I know there are LOTS of NR's who apply for our mountain goat permits.

I have a shorthair that loves sheds. So for she has found 3 this year. She has found bt, wt,md,elk and moose in 2 years. Plus she is an awsome bird dog.

Rob can fill in here but I'll try an do my best since I was with him 25 out of the 27 days hunted.
~The Bull that chased me and Pope was the first bull we had called in on the first day and Rob Passed on him cause it was early and to clarify I think we all had agreed that it was a low 130's type bull.
~The "Big" one that is still out there is a bull we found on the third day and then we stayed in that area trying to get after him for most of the hunt. Towards the end when it had looked like we weren't going to find that "big" one (which BTW we had put at 57" and solid 160 class) We started looking in other places.
~We went to another spot on a recommendation from Joe cause one of his guides had been watching a group of 5 bulls with another good one that he thought would be about 55 inches wide and he got video of him. It was the end of the hunt in fact we spent the last two days in there so at that point Phool wasn't holding out for a 160 bull anymore!
The last bull was referred to as the big one also just cause he was the largest of that area and the group he was in. That might be where the confusion comes in. I haven't seen the sheds yet cause I couldn't make the trip yesterday but Rob called me immediately and said it's the big one that was on the video, it's easy to tell cause the other 4 weren't anything close to this one and Phool remembers the horn configuration. It makes sense ... cause it was the same place they had been hanging out AND the big guys drop the heavy antlers first! I saw some of the other group while we were searching the first time and they are much smaller and still had head gear. Rob can confirm but Joe's guide may have been in there after us and didn't see this bull anymore. I'm sure Rob has more detail but that is it in a nutshell.

BC nailed it as without the skull plate its all conjecture from here on out, especially with 5 bulls hanging out together, plus the other 3 no one probably knew about. Makes a good story though and you scored a nice set of moose sheds in the process and a freezer full of meat. At least with the video, Charlie can use it to accuratly depict the bull versus just throwing a set of sheds on a cape. Maybe even get a still frame of the video mounted for the wall along with the mount. Good coversation piece when the beer is flowing. or.....stack them in the garage with all the others.

I guess if I were going to be part of the inquisition... if you knew the bull shed within the day or so and you killed him right there... why not just pick the sheds up right there in November or early December instead of waiting till June? Anyhow...thats just me mind thinkin... like I said, I could care less how, who, what, etc...

wow, haven't checked on this thread in a day or two. Too bad to see it turned into this. Maybe I am not doing my detective work properly, but it sounds like exactly what I would have done. Bull dropped his antlers. I make sure it's a big bull and shoot him. I go back in the spring where I shot him and see if I can find the sheds. I find a matched set not far from where I shot the bull. Looks like they fit. Might be my bull, might not. He's not getting them scored for P&Y for this exact reason. I don't see why it's a big deal. :dunno:

He did look for them last fall Ernie, then the snow set in and they were covered up. He's been back two or three times I believe. I'm very happy for him, whether they are the sheds or not. :)
