I have made a little extra money this month and want to buy a pistol to use primrily for rattle snakes. I just want to be armed in case i see one while fishing or hiking in sagebrush.
What is every ones favorite? I was thinking a little 22 or something.
Not looking to spend a whole lot on it either.
-
I just step on em if they need dead, or thunk em with a stick if they in the brush/rocks :dunno:
Can't remember ever shooting one
-
if you dont want to get gouged on getting a pistol, go for a 22. the ammo is/was cheap and easy to get. the gun is light and wont hurt your wallet. i would get one with at least a 4-6 inch barrel, cuz the longer barrel the more accurate but harder to carry. i have killed many rattlers with stuff all the way to a 7 mag, shotguns really do the trick on snakes. be careful removing the rattles, like stand on the head. mike w

I will take along some bird shot for whatever gun I'm carrying.
for a cheap yet reliable .22: get yourself a Heritage Rough Rider revolver for less than $200
-
I bought an S&W Model 17 revolver back in '66. Loaded with 22 crimp shot cartridges it's instant death to rattlesnakes.
-
My feet. To back away and go in another direction
-
Springfield XDS in 45ACP. Impossible to overkill a rattlesnake, dam things are the devil.
-
Don't be a pansy. Use a bow.
-
.22 ruger and bird shot.

44? or 22?

The only time I would encounter a snake would be while bird hunting, therefore I would probably shoot it with the judge (if I had it with me), or the 12 gauge. The judge seems cooler to me :chuckle:
-
I always liked that about the judge. With the 410 shell of course.
-
i want a judge! anyone want to unload theirs. i never thought about birdshot, what a great thought. we were good shots wthout it. lol mike w

What is really fun is showing it off to someone who doesn't know about guns by shooting clay pigeons out of the air. That is the best! :chuckle: Or shooting 5 slugs (the slimy kind) with one shot. That is fun too :chuckle:  They are a "blast!"
-
Yep
Love my judges.
Judge and Circuit Judge the camping hiking dual.
-
honestly its whatever gun i have in my hands (45colt, 45acp, every shotgun gauge, 270 made a mess) even let one of them nasty buzzworms fight with my weed wacker once, snake lost haha
personally though for a committed snake charmer id look for a 22 revolver, find a good used ruger single six or something to that effect, load it with 22 slugs and 22 birdshot capsules
-
I hear a lot of good about the judge. But my 44 is just about the same. :dunno: All depends how you load it up. Alter a projectile with shoot? Judge, 44 what's the diff?
-
Just its head down with a stick and cut it off with a pocket knife. That's what I do.
-
the judge is great for snakes. Ive killed a bunch with mine.
-
My go to killer for rattle snakes is a pocket knife. following a hold to the ground with a stick

Weight that's the difference, doesn't matter either way most times out in the field I carry my S/W .500/w 4"bbl

How's about something like this. I don't use it any longer and purchased it originally for snakes.
Taurus 45Colt 4' Stainless???

Gotta love the .22 for wackin rattlers but I would go with a revolver if your going to be using bird shot because some times the rounds wont cycle in a semi auto.

Any kind of revolver would do. They make the shot shell rounds for just about any caliber they make a revolver in. That's probably the one type of round they aren't sold out of right now too. If you got something like a .357 or .44 you could have it as a bear gun too. If your sole concern is snakes, a .22 would be fine. That's one of the great advantages of a revolver over a semi. They're kind of like a shotgun in the sense you can shoot many types of shells through them without having reliability issues. Get a .22 you can shoot subtonics, primer only, blanks, short, longs, long rifles, shot shells, etc, all in the same cylinder is you have enough spots for that many types.
-
Use whatever I have with me!
-
A stick !
-
Hey, my favorite caliber is a long handled shovel with the edge filed sharp. Never jams, never runs out of ammo, I can make one jump up and down like a sewing machine at half throttle. Snake Mc nuggets. ff :twocents:

falfire how much are you asking for the Taurus 45. Just curious.
-
In have a Bond Derringer Cowboy Defender 45 Long Colt/410 shotgun, Top barrel 410 # 6 shot and 45 colt bottom barrel for bigger targets, I had a shell pouch made up that holds five 410 shotgun shells, two 00-buckshot, two # 6 shot, and one deer slug, five hollow-point 45 colt shells. A nice leather on the belt holster.Bond sells a bunch of models or derringers and a whole array of barrels that are interchangable with all of their guns. The are a nice light weight personal defence handgun as well. The gun should be in the $400 range and extra barrels go from $139 to $189. A high quality, very dependable and affordable handgun.
