So I thought this could he interesting.
Say you got 1 chance to hunt anywhere in Africa you wanted. Money was no object. The catch is you were limited to 5 animals. What would they be?
I would have to go with;
1. Male Lion
2. Nyala
3. Zebra
4. Kudu
5. Impala
-
Ever since seeing Buzzy Cook mounting a giant african timber hog I've been facinated with them. I don't have much of a desire to shoot a zebra. Stupid I guess, but I can't get over the whole horse like thing. And I don't know the reason why, but elephant, rhino and hippo have never sounded too enticing to me either. But shooting an antelope the size of a moose or elk - now that excites me!

I thnk Bobcat is afraid of the stuff that will kill you LOL
Well, no, I don't think that's it. I'm not sure why but it probably has something to do with me being more of a meat hunter than a trophy hunter. If that makes sense.
Africa has never been high on my list of things to do. I have a lot more hunting to do in North America before I'd have any interest in going to Africa. Just mule deer and elk in various western states every year is plenty "exotic" for me. And throw in a moose hunt or two in Alaska or Canada, and perhaps Caribou once or twice, and I'd be happy. Oh, and lots and lots of antelope hunting in Montana and Wyoming. I don't see myself getting bored with North American hunting anytime soon.

I suppose it is a matter of taste. All those North American hunts sound like fun too. I hope to do them as well.
If you are a meat hunter, I guess I am an experience hunter (who also likes the meat). I go on hunts to enjoy the experience of it. Sometimes it is experiencing my son trying to kill his first animal. Sometimes it is experiencing the annual elk trip with good friends (there is always a lot of laughing on that trip than there is elk). Sometimes it is experiencing a different culture and different environment on the far side of the world where the animals, plants and people are all different.
As for the meat in Africa, it all gets eaten. While you are there hunting you are either eating meat from animals you shot or from animals shot by the previous hunter. Whatever you don't eat goes to feed the camp staff. If there is meat beyond that the locals show up to haul it off. I have always heard that when an elephant is shot the locals appear out of nowhere and strip the carcass clean (another scene I would like to experience). The meat is certainly never wasted.
While I love the taste of game meat and keep a well stocked freezer, I don't hunt efficiently enough to make it cheap meat. Even a local deer hunt costs me more per pound than just buying at the grocery store. Hunting in Africa costs much more in dollars per mouthful of meat eaten, but either way I make up the costs in the value of the experience.
-
I'd love to go to Africa someday but I would prefer to just go on vacation there and not hunt. I'd rather spend my time seeing as much as possible while I'm there. I would certainly invest in a good camera and take pictures of the wildlife. Maybe I would change my mind about hunting in Africa after having been there.
-
If you hunt Africa there is a good chance you will find a way to go back. I was concerned about the whole process enough I almost cancelled the trip. Long flights gun rules long way from home. All the being said I long to go back and hunt over there again. I may not be able to afford what was on my top 5 list but there are so many less expensive animals to hunt and the diverse countryside as well as cultures. Yes I have hunted in North America (as well as Canada) all great trips but Africa is different and also rewarding.
-
Bull Elephant
Kudu
Leopard
Lion
Buffalo
-
kudu
nyala
bongo
flexible on the others, but the cats don't really interest me. I have a ceiling that might fit a giraffe rug... :chuckle:
I'd like to try to use my bow or ML.
-
The Africa thing has never interested me much. People I know who have went on one it was just a high fences luxury hunt. I do need to kill a Cape buffalo some day though, and while I'm there I wouldn't mind taking a few animals like a hyena and baboon for their skulls. Crocs and hippos have always seemed cool to me too, can't even imagine how I would display a hippo skull.
-
I went to Africa last year for the first time. The year before someone basically "gave" me a hunt at a price too good to pass up. Prior to that I had no interest in going to Africa and until I was actually there I really wasn't all that excited about the trip.
Now that I have been there, my perspective has changed. It can truly be a wonderful experience unlike anything you will see or do in North America.
As for animals: one I have not seen on anyone's list is a zebra. Perhaps it's not a top five, but it is a far more challenging animal to hunt than you might think.
Meat: it stays in Africa and supports families on very limited budgets. make sure you eat some while you're there. Trophies: take as many or as few as you wish. A picture album is a great alternative.
I would really encourage anyone on the fence about going to just do it.

The only interest I have in Africa's animals is the kudu or a leopard. My Grandma would turn over in her grave if I ever shot an elephant, I'm not an anti hunter in anyway shape or form but, I couldn't imagine ever killing an elephant. They have human like emotions, very smart and I just can't see the challenge or reason of killing such an emotional being. I'm not by any way putting those down who want to hunt them, it's just the last animal on this earth I would want to kill. I prefer the North America animals way more than anywhere else in the world.

Sable
Gemsbok
kudu
Impala
Nyala
For starters. If I took a cat which I probably don't feel the need to, it would be a leopard.
-
Cape Buffalo
Eland
Waterbuck
Zebra
Leopard
In reality, my next safari (2014 or 2015) will be for Eland, Waterbuck, Zebra, Red Hartabeast, Blesbuck, White Blesbuck, Black Springbuck, and Copper Springbuck
-
I also had a Zebra on my list as #3. I'd love to go one day but do not see it in my near future. The $$ is just not there.
I have never gotten the opertunity to work on any African animals. That is something else I'd really like to do.
-
I have taken Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Kudu, Sable, Nyala, and several more on my four trips to Africa. It can be some of the hardest hunting you will ever see if you want to really get out and hunt. Just tell the outfitter what you want to do. The outfitters that I have hunted with really like it when hunters want get out and really hunt instead of just riding around in truck. Shooting over a waterhole to me would be like just riding around looking for deer and elk in a clearcut.
-
Africa ranks way low on my list of places to hunt but if it ever came up-
leopard (with hounds)
Desert Lynx (with hounds)
Sable (archery)
Lord Derby Eland (rifle)
Nile lechwe (archery)
-
Bull elephant
Cape buffalo
leopard over bait
red diker
blue diker
I started reading Robert Ruark when I was 11 years old and then the rest of the famous hunting "names'" books, I never thought I would get there myself. Well, I've been twice in two years and I encourage anyone who has the interest to go, it is an incredible place.
A couple of items: I hunted South Africa and worked my butt off for my trophies. It was high fence hunting, never saw the fences and the game was wild as hell. You just try sneaking up on a herd of gemsbok or a trophy kudu, you'll see what I mean. And you had better be in shape, you are going to walk your ass off unless you are bow hunting. No sitting in trees over a waterhole with a rifle or shooting from the truck, very bad form, that.
As for cost, it never amazes me how folks who think they can't afford Africa hunting but will climb on one of those cattle car cruise ships with 3,000 other folks and go someplace tame. The hunting is very doable and the experience is life changing, at least it was for me. And you want adventure? Stumble into a rhino and her calf sometime, that will give you a campfire story. Or see the puff adders, all of the incredible birds, monkeys, bushes that grab you when you walk near them. Adventure is adventure, don't miss it.

Hey, I have an ostrich cape that you could have a go at! It is tanned and ready to go. I ran out of cash after my last round of taxidermy and really did not have a place to put it so it had to wait. Maybe we could work out some kind of an arrangement!

Nice monster Steenbok there!
Bingo and bingo.
Value for the dollar is amazing.
I am not wealthy and I was able to put together a savings plan for 2 years to pay for my hunts. In October of last year I shot 18 animals on a 10 day hunt including cape Buffalo. The total cost of the trip -doorstep to doorstep except for shipping the trophies home and taxidermy - was less than the cost of a modest car, and perhaps 20-30% more than a 5 day trophy Elk hunt in New Mexico where you may or may not harvest one animal. Great deal in my book.
If it calls to you, do it while you are in good health! Life changes quickly.

Hippo, Leopard, Nyala, Bongo and Lord Derby Eland. Cape Buffalo would be my filler if one of these was unavailable :)

Rob, thanks for the comment on the steenbok, he is my best trophy to date. They are really neat little antelope, closely resembling the famous Jack-a-lops of our western states. :chuckle:
You are right about doing Africa while the health is still good. I'm in my mid-sixties and am working on setting up my next trip, one never knows when the health will head south. I've taken 15 animals in two trips and still need my Cape buff, a zebra, a warthog, and a couple of baboons. Then there is klipspringer, dik dik, leopard, blue duiker, red duiker...the list just goes on and on. It's interesting that no one mentioned lion as a desired species unless I missed it.
-
I love all the tiny ten 'lopes.
I have two so far. Steenbok and klipie. was going to get a common Duiker last year but everytime we saw one we were on the trail of something higher on the priority list.
(nice hippo and lion photos too!)
-
Another want is all 4 color variations of Springbok.
-
Rob, where did you get your klipspringer? That is a great one you've got there, I'm hoping to have a shot at one on my next trip to Africa. It's funny, I get the biggest kick out of walking the bush and just seeing the "flash" of a little brown body racing through the grass. The PH is always the one who can tell which one it is or, rather, was.
I shot a decent common duiker on my last trip, shot him shooting down from a hillside very early one morning as he was sunning himself, so I have two of the little guys. That was the first time I ever had a chance to see one that wasn't running full out. The taxidermist is mounting my bush buck, common duiker, and steenbok in a tower arrangement I've titled "Eastern Cape Trilogy". Love the little guys.

Nice Duiker. I really wanted one. We only got one stalk on one and it eluded us and as I said above, all the other shot opportunites that I had were thwarted by higher priority animals. Did get an old bushbuck so that was cool.
I picked the Klipie up in Zim last October. Thinking a full body mount. Both the Klipie and the Bushbuck were taken right along the Zimbabwe side of the Limpopo river.
They are fun. kinda like rabbit hunting only cooler.
Here is what I had done with my steenbok...
-
Another want is all 4 color variations of Springbok.
I have seen a few of those mounts and they look really cool. the chocolate springbok are neat looking.
-
I thought about doing a floor pedestal witb all 4 combined as shoulder pddestals. Than use the flags off all 4 to go on the sides of the basem. That was just 1 idea.
-
the next trip to Africa if all goes as planned I want to take the grand slam of springbuck and do all four on one pedestal mount they are going to let me take five culls so I'm hoping to use them as the inserts on the pedestal
-
The four color phases of springbok on a pedestal is the best way to display them, for sure.
Nice mounts Rob, I've got limited room to display trophies so full body mounts are out. Ugh. And I just read your hunting report thread you posted in Dec. That sounds like an excellent hunt and you really did a nice job documenting the experience. Very well done, sir.
-
Agreed on the Springbok pedistal. Michelle, you should go to the next SCI show in Jan/Feb- or the cheaper route (that is just as good) is the Dallas Safari Club show - usually the week prior or after the SCI show. The taxidermy is mind blowing.
Thanks Upton, I enjoyed that thread. I am in the process of covnerting it to a journal. I have pretty much finished the first draft of the trip portion of the journal. I just need to do the pre-trip part. Our hides and horns should ship to Texas in the next month or so.
The nice thing about full body mounts, is they go onthe floor. not an area that is filled with existing mounts. I live in a crackerbox house (too many hunting trips I guess) so I know about space issues. Mine are allcrammed in two very small rooms. The wife has just about agreed (resigned herself is the term she uses) that the animals are going to start migrating out of my two dead rooms to other parts of the house. (About time this house gets some class in my opinion!).
Someday we will move and when we do I'll make sure there is a large game room for taxidermy!
Here is my dad's warthog. it really fits nicley on the floor out of the way (again, my mom would disagree with the "out of the way" comment)
-
the next trip to Africa if all goes as planned
See, thats the problem with Africa.... There is always a "next trip" in the works.
-
1. Kenyan donkey
-
Rob which animals did you take if africa this last trip?
-
Easier to post a table.
The reason we shot so many Impala was three fold:
1. We shot several to be used for camp meat for the trackers, villagers, and hutners
2. We shot a few as mercy kills (i.e. lots caught in a poachers snare, miserable animal, etc
3. I hunted Leopard as an afterthought and needed 10 or so for bait.
I did not bring any Impala home. I think Ray and Kirk are bringing two home each.
-
Rob,
The most interesting or, maybe I should say, surprising part is the number of baboons you all shot. I don't think people realize that baboons are incredibly intelligent and, one they're shot at, you aren't likely to get another chance unless they are many hundreds of yards distant and they haven't seen you. The closest I got to one (I wanted to take two for the skulls) was 500 yards and I'm not experienced with shooting at that distance.
I have a significant professional background in biology and I had some courses in primate behavior including baboons. I've got to say, I think baboons are the one animal in the world I do not like one bit. I know of their importance in the scheme of things but I still really dislike them. I should have put them on my "5 animals I most want to shoot" list, I guess.
-
I had the following on my wishlist:
1. Kudu
2. Impala
3. Warthog
4. Bushbuck
5. Zebra
The trip last year took care of the Kuda, Impala, and Zebra.
After the trip, the new list consists of:
1. Cape Buffalo
2. Warthog
3. Gemsbok
4. Crocodile
5. Any other plainsgame that wanders by. :)
Don't have the desire to shoot any of the cats. Like cats too much. Elephant doesn't do much for me either.
-
no one mentioned the bush pig he shot. I hear those
-
sorry are tough to get. just returned from SA on april. took my
5 yr old daighter and wife . it can be done if you put money aside
I am definetly not rich. a great kudu bull is a beautiful sight. also game munumbers are staggering. many types of hunting can be done. if anyone has qiestions on price.feel free to call me or pm me. it could be cheaper than you think and there are bad outfitters so beware
-
His Bush Pig was a real trophy! I was jealous! As was his Hyena... Also jealous!
I agree, you don't have to be rich to go to Africa, just disiplined to put a savings plan together. I did a 3 year plan to pay for my trip. Worth every sacrifice.
Agree on vetting outfitters in advance. accurate reloading.com is a great place to do that.
Youngbull, I think you owe us a thread with photos!! you are holding out on us!
-
I will try and post some pics not to tech savy
-
Nyala
Bongo
Black Wildebeast
Sable
Aardvark
-
Ever looked into how they hunt those Bongo? That is a hard core hunt in some hard core habitat in a hard core country.
If the car ride to camp does not kill you, the jungle does not get you, and the silverbacks don't get you, the ants will probably carry you away!
honestly it sounds like a real adventure, one I'd like to do someday!
here is a great report with some outstanding photos:

Hey now!
I did miss two shots hyena, but in my (limited) defense, it was at night, with no lights or illuminated reticle, and slinking in and around the shadows of the trees at the time! I wonder if I was the ONLY one to miss a shot on a hyena? Hmm... Might have to check the pivot table...
But, as you said, it made stealing your bushbuck all that much sweeter!

I don't think its possible to stop at 5.........
