Im not sure but i think this is a horse or elk. But where i found it leads me to believe its an elk....
what is a good way to tell if its a horse or an elk....
found it with the whole skelton it was pretty cool.
the other attached one is an elk skull...
looks pretty close dont ya think??

elk
-
are you sure? i googled horse skull and it looks so similar....???? :dunno:
-
I'd say elk... just a guess though. Can't say that I've seen any horse skulls.
-
Its an Elk. I found a horse skeleton up off Texas Creek road 2yrs ago. The nostril area is different on a horse, as well as the eye socket area.
-
very cool, im gonna go back and get the jaw bones.
and try and mount that beast. maybe find some antlers from a shed and make a nice piece till i can replace it with my own this year i hope.
the skeleton was skattered all over the area like cougar, bear, yotes etc just had a feast.

Horse skull (minus the holes drilled in it)

hummm
ok..... i agree elk.
now the question is male or female?
anyone a CSI???
haha
-
I would say cow. There would be some sort of formation for the horns to attach to. :twocents:
-
ok but still might mount it :-)
pretty cool to find a whole elk skeleton in the woods.
-
Pretty sure that is from a female elk. A horse has a much bigger skull. You'll need the bony pedicles from a male elk skull to mount some sheds on it. Check out www.vandykestaxidermy.com They offer three styles of shed connectors and some reproduction skulls. You could get a skull prep kit and boil that find of yours and make some kind of display with it. The more time you spend in elk winter range the more skulls you'll find. I often check them to see if the ivories are still attached in the front and upper part of the mouth. Usually someone else has been there before me.
-
i will have to check when i get home.
and i am gonna try and go back to get the lower jaw bones they fell off and i know where they are.
cool cool thanks for the info

ELK

HORSE - come on folks, use your noodles :chuckle:. Elk and Deer have NO upper front teeth.

Cow Elk....no question about it.

HORSE - come on folks, use your noodles :chuckle:. Elk and Deer have NO upper front teeth.
I was looking at the skull wiht the holes in it....that's the horse skull. The other one is an elk, as everyone has already made perfectly clear :chuckle:
-
elk.....horses have teeth on the top in the front
-
Good point about the lack of upper teeth. It must be a cow ELK. Or could it be a moose? :dunno:
-
So did you guys decide yet?
COW ELK????
im gonna go back next weekend and check out the whole sketeton and ill take some pics for you cats to look at and CSI it...
-
Elk, horses have upper teeth in the front.
-
Nessy mystery solved.
-
is it legal to pick up a skull in the woods even know it has no horns?
if it had horns, it's not legal to remove it from the woods.
-
Oops.
-
Well if it was...whoops... :dunno: but that seems pretty stupid if it is.
ITS DEAD!!! Geez....
they never told us anything in our hunters-ed class about not picking up skulls in the field. :chuckle:
ha ha!
-
Elk for sure
-
Cool
:IBCOOL:
-
Man-0-man, I was almost ashamed how long it took some of you folks to figure out it wasn't a horse! the teeth thing and all.....
deer, elk, moose, cows, goats, sheep, buff'ler, ALL don't have teeth on thier upper jaw....
city folks.... :chuckle:
oh, and the warden told the kids in my son's hunter ed class it wasn't legal to pick up a scull with antlers mounted on it unless it was on your own proper-T.
-
ummmm so what do i do...thats not really a known thing or at least i didnt know.
and besides when i put it in my pack i was certain it was a horse.
whoops.
i guess ill just go put it back where i found it.... :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
It's a cow elk ;) Elk have whistler's on the top. It's part of the trophy when you harvest an elk. Always take out the whistlers.
-
ITS ELK!
100%
I have elk and horse skulls in my collection. The jaw bone on the horse is way further back...if you wanna see an elk skull beside a horse skull just look in my albums!
-

The warden here, opened the topic up by holding up a 170 class whitetail, and asked "would you pick this up?"
Doesn't matter to me, I'd pick it up! sooooo there! ;)
-
Nice...
right on!
-
Long Tat-----Most of us know you ate them animals first! :chuckle:
-
Well littletoes...
Id like to argue but I gotta say both elk and horse taste a little like ROCK CHUCK to me :yike:
:IBCOOL:
Glad some of you remember the longtat illness...lol
